Jeep vs Subaru
Yes thats absolutely true. one time i went over to a friends house who owns a moto cross track and asked if i could take my suby out there. he laughed at the prospect of it and said happy rolling but said sure. i finally convince him to get in the car (helmet boots and full moto x gear on) and took that thing around the track getting air off every jump. even most four wheelers except the blasters/ banshees etc couldnt do what i did in the suby.

Jeep vs Subaru
well i built a rock crawling cherokee for $600 including the price of the jeep itself.

Jeep vs Subaru
yes ill will admit subarus can rally very well. ive taken air off of my jeep and though nothing in the car broke i cant say the same about my head on the roll cage.

1985 brat transmission swap
nissan used a transmission made by subaru with an external transfer caser that is auto. if you want an auto that would be a good choice though the conversion would be very hard but if your wanting something auto and are willing to put out that much work its good to have something a little more fail proof.

Jeep vs Subaru
i have an 85 jeep cherokee i use for wheeling. its got a 4 inch pro comp lift welded diffs front and rear and a roll cage. i saved a ton of money from going to the junk yard and pulling parts from wrecked jeeps. it only has a 2.5 four banger which is good motor but a little gutless for my taste. im hoping to find a 4.0 soon. The 2.8 GM motor was an absolute lemon and that was what was in some jeeps.

Jeep vs Subaru
4.o 6 cylinder is a very strong motor to. ive seen those last for upwards of 500,000 miles with proper care. maybe not quite as reliable as subys but as far as large offroad SUVS go they are among the best you can get.

Jeep vs Subaru
i will admit it has better gas and better on road traction control but as far as hill climbing i would have to disagree. my suby can keep up with my jeep most of the time but my jeep can basically idle over almost any hill in low range. One vehicle that absolutely sucks is hummers.

Jeep vs Subaru
Jeeps and subarus are both awesome though i will admit my suby is more reliable.

Bring the Boxer Diesel to the US!
brumby420 replied to bendecker's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhat i gotta wonder is if there will ever be any performance parts for it available. i know that when building this motor subaru mainly had reliability, balance, and fuel economy in mind but it would be interesting to find out how well one of those could be built up into a high horsepower tuner. I know it sounds weird but diesel racing is strongly catching on.

brumby420 replied to bendecker's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYeah im not a big fan of auto either but a lot of city people here in the states would love an auto suby if it had dual range.

For Shame... and Giggles
i have a diesel blazer that gets 25 mpg. it got rolled but other then needing the starter wired up it runs awesome and is street legal. im looking to sell it pretty soon if you are or know anybody interested in getting it. Motor only has 40,000 on it and tranny has less then 1,000 sense rebuild. i also may sell my jeep soon if you know anybody interested in those.

You know you should be seeing a lot better then 18 mpg tops unless your driving really fast. our blazer gets a minimum of 20 and upwards to 23 on highway driving.

Ok thanks for the help.

How hard would it be to do a RHD conversion yourself. I know it wouldnt be easy but you could possibly order parts from Oz, NZ or anywhere else across the pond and it wouldnt be too much.

4 runners and blazers are both excellent vehicles people. Yeah the four runner is a bit underpowered but its reliable as heck and hard to break. The blazers are great vehicles and the 4.3 vortec is one of the most tough and reliable motors around. the only issue we had on ours was the tranny went out but $500 got us a new rebuilt one installed (we know some good cheap tranny experts). Ours has 140,000 and besides the fact that it will need a starter soon is great. As far as handling issues i sure as heck know the yotas aint much better and keep in mind a large SUV is not going to handle anything like a subaru

jeep wont run
im have a 1985 jeep cherokee with a 2.5 liter 4 banger and it was just running last week but then died out and wouldnt start. i assumed it was just out of gas as what usually happens when you romp in a jeep all day long LOL. yesterday though i try adding gas to start it up and it would just turn over and not show any signs of wanting to go. i checked and it was getting fuel and i know it haqs good compression and air flow so that leaves spark/timing as the two culprits. i took off the spark plug and coil and turned it over. I saw it wasnt getting any spark what so ever. The spark plug is good and the coil didnt seem corroded so i guess that would likely mean the distributor is bad. What im wondering though is could it be possible that a wire got knocked loose inside it cause correct me if im wrong but i didnt think that distributors just broke like that unless they got got into very deep water which it hadnt at that time. Another question i had is how likely is it that it could have jumped time or something like that. It didnt really knock or do anything weird so i dont think it did but i have no idea why it would just go out like that. Lastly im hoping i can figure out this issue on my own but if not if anybody knows a good honest mechanic who charges a fair price in the North Idaho, east Washington area if you can get me their contact info that would be great.
