Religion discussion of the week. Sealants...
Idasho replied to Ricearu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI really dont care what the FSM calls for. RTV simply isnt the stuff to use. The acronym itself shows why. RTV = room temperature vulcanizing That means it has the potential to set up BEFORE the parts are assembled. Clearances within the case (main bearings) assume no space in between the case halves. If you have RTV setting up before the case halves are assembled, you WILL effect bearing clearances.

Idasho replied to Ricearu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOil pump and case you could get away with. But case halves is a big no-no. using RTV will not allow the halves to seat correctly, which will effect bearing clearances within the case.

Idasho replied to Ricearu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFor any machined/machined surfaces, you do NOT want RTV. You need an anaerobic gasket maker. loctite 518 / permatex 51817 As far as items like pans, Im 100% sold on Toyota's black RTV.

how to increase brat payload/how much have you hauled
The payload really depends upon the year/generation of the brat. That said, you cannot raise the payload, unless you lighten the vehicle. Payload is simple math. Max GVWR - curb weight = payload.

Got the part #s for you. Cable 737026033 Pin 736016050 And my ticket actually shows "list" at $30.43 for the cable, $1.04 for the pin.

Clutch class 101 ....
Nope. Primary differences between stages will be friction material and clamp load. A more aggressive friction material grabs more. Combined with a higher clamp load, go far enough and you basically find a ON-OFF clutch. Some materials also do not loose grip as they heat up. Higher clamp load brings one nasty part, a heavier pedal. In my experience anything beyond a traditional organic disc (stoc) results in a very short life. I had a Fibertuff disc with a higher clamp load pressure plate in my SHO taurus. Smooth engagement, fairly light pedal, and gripped, no matter how hot it got. Short life though, as it actually WEARS the flywheel. Over the years in many different vehicles Ive tried a variety of setups, only to fall back to one simple setup. Stock disk + slightly higher clamp load. With flat flywheels that means a custom pressure plate. Subarus are easy. Just specify a shallower step when the flywheel is getting turned will result in a higher clamp load.

from what Ive read, aftermarket clutch cables are JUNK. I picked up a couple from the dealer for less than $30 each here. I get "special" pricing though. I think MSRP is about $50 Be sure to get a pin as well. The cables do not come with them. Its the pin that attached the cable end to the pedal assembly.

Ive been on the lookout for one of these since I picked this car up.... Its brushed aluminum. It is going to get painted black though. Raw alum for now, getting too cold for paint.

NPR rings OE Subaru manufacturer?
Idasho replied to franklinstower's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDo a light hone. You need SOME kind of fresh crosshatching for the rings to bed correctly.

Dual Carb EA-81 Build
I know, but just getting the linkage sorted out can be a challenge. Have you ever tuned dual carbs before?

Dual Carb EA-81 Build
cool. I bet that linkage was fun to dial in. Ive got some old-school carb sync's if you are interested.

BIG THANKS to Andy from Spokane. He sold me this sweet rear air foil. Its in awesome shape! Im trying to decide whether or not to keep it raw aluminum and polish it, or powdercoat it (black) Either way, it installed easy enough. Had to talk to myself a bit to drill holes in this car

Its officially a 4x4 again Got the shortened driveline in, and was able to take her for a spin. Had it up to 70mph and no noticeable vibrations. Certainly a newer noise from the tunnel, but that is to be expected. Lots more driveline moving in there now. Was also able to check the 4wd and the new lower low range. One of my primary reasons for the 5-speed swap was the lower low range. And it is nice.

proportioning valve + rear disk swap (WTB: valve)
Skidding straight forward is ALWAYS better than swapping ends.

Circuitboard, repair or replace?
yeah, that is the result of a problem. You need to find the cause, otherwise it will just happen again.

Plama Cutters
Really depends on how much you want to spend. Ive been more than happy with my chinese plasma. It performs great, at a fraction of the cost of a miller or hypertherm. It is a GiantTech Slice50D. Shipped to my door with a 50pack of consumables for $400 I have no need for a table, so all is free-hand or using guides. Regardless of what you get. Once you have a plasma, things get SO much easier.

Paranoid about these hydro lifters and a bit of a tick Ive been hearing, I went through and double checked my clearances. I tightened each one by another 1/4 turn. Im probably just nuts..... but does is anyone bothered by this tick at idle?

Well, I think I found the problem with the clutch... Im an idiot. I had the floor mat in backwards... and it was preventing me from depressing it all the way. Oh well, At least Ill have some spare clutch cables Small update for this evening. 100-mile report After 100 miles of working the poop out of this motor in an attempt to bed the piston rings well, it was given an oil and filter service. During that service, an overall inspection was done, and various fasteners tightened. No leaks, and things look to be working out great. Oil did its job, keeping debris in suspension, and the magnetic drain plug didnt have ANYTHING on it. This oil sample, as well as a sample from the next batch will be sent off for testing. Im happy. And this motor is starting to feel real nice. The additional torque from the higher compression is showing itself. So now, with fresh oil and filter is will be drive normally for 1500 miles. Then the timing will be bumped up a bit, and the motor will be fed synthetic oil, and a fresh filter, of course. Then its off to a wonderful 8-10k mile oil change life.

Mine doesnt have a stiff pedal. It just keeps wanting me to tighten the cable. Hopefully a new cable does it. Figured it wouldnt hurt, it is the original cable.

Spindle slop but bearings have no play. Pics included
Yeah, its shot. How does the hub look?

Was able to put some more miles on it this weekend. Motor is doing great. Oil pressure is rock solid. Im seeing 22PSI at hot idle. One problem though, it looks like the new clutch did in the old, original clutch cable. I adjusted it (tightening it) 3 times in the past few days, only for the difficult shifting to return within a few miles. I ordered a couple of clutch cables from the dealer. Figured, might as well have one on the shelf
