My Dream Brat
I'm sure you have thought of this, but whatever you do, Keep track of the original motor. A car with that much history should be kept original or have the ability to be restored to original. Bill

Weird CV axle problem
Texan, you are exactly correct. The only axle I ever changed, I put together like your drawing, then turned it 180 degrees before installing the pin. Bill

CLUTCH pedal just came off?! '87 GL
86GL-10 you are my hero. Taking your car apart in the dark with a flashlight to help a board member is above and beyond. Now a question, my Brat doesn't have that spring, but the hill holder is hooked up, and has a pretty substantial looking spring. Shouldn't that be enough? Bill

Fast blinker.
When you mounted the left blinker did you make a good ground? Are the bulbs all the same? Bill

POS 82 Carb no fuel from bowl
Did you find your problem? Guy on my MC forum chased one of these for a couple of weeks. Turned out that he had capped his bowl vent. Bill

Hitachie Ramblings
One question, then I will let this die a natural death. How does a Hitachi carb "wear out"? What goes away that can't be rebuilt? Just curious. Bill

Some Interior Issues
Try pushing in or pulling out slightly on your ignition key. Mine is really picky as far as the chimes go. Haven't gotten as far as the lights yet. Bill

Hitachie Ramblings
As we say around here "Y'all please don't get in a pissin' contest." I am enjoying both sides of this conversation. Please review the first sentence in this thread. My planned 1st step in improving my Hitachi is to replace it with a Weber:brow: Now according to Bonvo and Dirk in Bonvo's adapter thread over in the historic section, at least some EA61's and EA71's came with 306's with mechanical linkages. Dirk I'm sorry I called you an Aussie Bill

Hitachie Ramblings
I'm still trying to figure out what I have, remember my motor came in a basket. I'm assuming a 306-XX, where the XX tells me more than the 306. My motor included reman heads which were painted a silver color. The carb is the same color, and the machined flat spot on the float bowl where I assume there should be some numbers has either been painted over or sonic cleaned. No numbers. Is the "race Hitachi" streetable, or does it just want to run flat out? I saw a post by an Aussie talking about a mechanical secondary. Is this a different Hitachi or just different linkage? A small carb is not much of a concern. Look at my age. I got past 1100 double pumpers some years ago. I guess I need a book. Any recommendations?? Oh, and I already have learned something. It's spelled Hitachi:D:D Bill

The Awesome *NEWER* Generation Picture Thread
okie bill replied to Red92's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEvilDead, Info on your photograph? Not the car, the photo. Equipment? Filters? Notice I didn't refer to it as a pic. Did you do that on purpose, or was it an accident? Good photo either way. Bill

Hitachie Ramblings
I have a line on a new Weber which was purchased for a Beetle and never installed. May be free but benjamachine's thread re: high altitude, and skishop69's post about filling and drilling jets has me thinking. In the process of the weber conversion why not first try to improve the Hitachi? I crawled around under my 87 BRAT the other day and couldn't find the cat or the O2 sensor so I'm thinking my feedback circuit is already kaput. If I'm thinking right, pitching the feedback selenoids and about 10,000 vacuum lines will make it run rich, so I would need to do the same as benjamachine. Am I thinking right or do I have it backwards? Those Hitachie jets look like they might be removable with the carb still mounted. Are they? Has anyone tried converting from vacuum to manual secondary. Sorry for the long post Bill

How will my BRAT do in the snow
"You can only do better with another Subaru." Let me see if I can figure out how to make that a sig or tag line Bill

How will my BRAT do in the snow
Good responses, but how am I going to use them to convince my wife that I need another car? :-p:-p It only snows enough around here to worry about maybe twice or three times a year. The locals have the attitude that "If God put it there, He can remove it." About two or three days after a good snow is the worst driving conditions. Packed snow turned to ice. I think the best deal for that is studs, but can't justify them for two or three uses a year. Sounds like I need to try the BRAT.

How will my BRAT do in the snow
Not only is this my first Subaru, but it's my first 4WD vehicle of any kind. I know my 2WD F150 is pretty useless in slick conditions, no traction for the drive wheels. So, I was wondering, since what 4WD does in the BRAT is send power to the axle which has trouble pushing the F150, is there going to be enough improvement to justify getting this cool little car out in all that crap? Maybe I need a rusty or beat up wagon for wintertime Bill

Difficulty in replacing an '87 GL windshield?
The shops around here won't guarantee that they won't break the used glass. new glass, they will be responsible for breakage. Used glass, if they break it you're just out $50.00. Bill
