  1. So im going to be swapping the drive system in my brat with one from an early 2000's wrx, and im currious how difficult a certain modification would be. i would like to keep the abiloity to select on the fly 2wd and awd, so it would be a slurr of a 4wd system and an awd system. is this a feasable thing to attempt?
  2. Where did you find this skirt?? im going to start a similar build on my brat soon and would love to find this EDIT:i saw your build on annother forum first, where i didnt see a mention of the 1 in a million ebay find.
  3. yes, pics please!!! i was just in austrailia and was kinda bummed i didnt see any 80s/90s subarus.
  4. Inhreited the Brat from my step-dad who bought it about 10 years ago. getting ready to turn it into a little rally beast. plenty of rust in all the common brat rust spots (plus a rather odd one on the underside of the hood), but shouldnt be too hard to fix. hard part is gonna be the drive system swap
  5. now that is one mighty clean soob. i soo wish brat looked anywhere close to that clean
  6. i would describe the condition of it as: eh. frame looks decent and feels pretty solid, but the body is in kinda rought condition. left fender has a massive dent (i wouldnt even call it a dent. i would just say the fender is bent) that interferes with the driver door opening; unrepairable. right fender got attacked by a bear (litterally. there are bite marks above the tire. same thing happened to the same fender on my brothers outback). and the hood, somehow, got rusted through in the engine compartment. cant see it when its closed. the rear sill (body panel under the rear bumper) is a jagged rusted mess. theres little bits of rusted through spots along the bottom of both side of the car. and theres the all to common rust through on the wheel wells in the bed. and its in despirate need of a paint job. mecahnically; the brat purrs like an angry dog. the muffler rusted off, so it has quite the growl (i prefer the way it sounds without a muffler) but other than that it runs quite nicely. only problem is that it has a lot of trouble starting in the cold. i remember reading a thread here a while back that said something about the wiring or connectors on the starter being bad can cause this. with reguards to the transmission, ill definitely be using an ej transmission for 2 reasons; first of all the ea tranny i have is a 4 speed, so i have no highway gear. at the moment, i have to be going at aroung 3k rpm constantly to maintain highway speeds. and i dont doubt the integrity of the ea tranny, but id feel much more comfortable running one that is designed for the motor id be running. i like to think im saving it from the grips of a rusty death and then putting it on steriods considering the fact that most people i know either think its a pile of junk and i should throw it off a cliff, or they think its the ugliest car ever and i shouldnt assiciate myself with it lol. as for budget, im not limiting myself on how much money total is going to go into it. pretty much as much as it takes to make the way i picture it being, into reality.
  7. so, as my topic says, im going to be modding my brat into a little rally beast. Im already looking for needed replacement parts such as hood, fenders, grill, rear bumper, etc. mostly cosmetic. but im still planning out the major modifications. One of the first things on the long list of modifications and repairs needed is an engine (well..actually an entire drive system, but engine being the focal point) for the much needed increase in power. im thinking the system from a late 90's impreza; ej25 motor, manual transmission, awd. actually, let me take a step back and just lay out the basic overall idea for the project. basically i want an every day driver that i can also go play in the sand with . cosmetically i want it to look like a factory soup up. very simple black body with white accents. mechanics is a who different story. im going to be building it for aggressive offroad use, so a small lift and slightly larger tires is in order. and an engine with much greater power; more specifically torque. any ideas on what engine or what vehicle to steal the drive system from? or any other ideas or tips? i will post pictures shortly, but considering im not in the same state as my brat at the moment, i only have pictures from earlier this year
  8. if your looking to get rid of it, how much do you want? im over in lakeville and desperately looking for certain parts to restore my 86 brat gl
  9. interesting. i wouldnt have expected to be able to hear something like that. ill have to check that. though whats weird, is that it did the same thing to me a few weeks ago at a gas station (same click sound, though no seatbelt light) and i figured, no power, better check the battery connections. so i fiddled with the terminal connections, made sure they were tight, and it got power back.
  10. Well, happy new year to everyone. i have a 1986 Subaru BRAT GL that admittedly is in rough condition. it runs (well, ran) good, 4wd works great, so mostly its cosmetics i need to work on. but as of a few days ago (i think it was thursday) it wont start. my brother was using it to drive to work, and he said it made a metallic click from in the engine compartment, and now theres no power to the vehicle...except for the fasten seatbelt light in the dash?? anyone got ideas as to what it could be?
  11. hi bill, i have a 1986 brat that id like to give a 3 inch lift to, and consequently bigger tires as well. i was wondering if you might be able to direct me to places i might be able to find such parts as tires/rims. still in the planning phase (havent even gotten a chance to get the car 100% w/out modifications and the car is on the complete opposite end of the country as i am currently). im also thinking about tracking down an old XT6 to snag the engine and transmission from to replace the current 4cyl 4spd i have. i assume that'd change the lift kit a bit since you sell them by engine type.

  12. hello, subaru fans of the world. i have a 1986 Subaru Brat GL. currently in rough shape; a few small fixes required along with a few modifications i want to make, with the stock EA-81 engine and 4 speed 4wd transmission. would it be possible to replace the stock transmission with a T81G 5 speed 4wd transmission? im pretty sure the T81G was built specifically for the EA-81 engine, but will the transmission be too big to fit in the Brat body? and will there be any issues with gear ratios or gears lining up?
