Help! '88 GL with non-original ea-81
zmarrott replied to zmarrott's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i was able to drive just over 200 miles with a few stall outs, but now it wont start. im pretty sure its the coil pack though. gonna get one and check -
i need help with my car. just got a 3 door 1988 GL 4x4 and it ran good when i bought it, but now it wont stay running when i put any load on the engine. i can get it to idle, then if i put load on it, it sputters really bad and stalls. takes a bunch of tries starting to get it to stay running again. the ea81 was put in by the previous owner, and it has a 2 barrel weber carb that i was told needs adjusting. im stuck cuz i have to drive 700 miles and my other car just broke down

headlight switch, radio weirdness.
zmarrott replied to Danja44's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds like you have the dimmer wire from the car wiring harness hooked to the radios main power input. depending on your aftermarket radio, this is understandable, as there is no constantly live power source like in newer cars. i had to run a dedicated wire straight from the battery to get my aftermarket radio to function properly. shouldnt be too hard to figure out which wires are what. just get a repair manual (if you havent already), and it will tell you which color wire is connected to which component in the car. and once you have the wireing harness wires all identified, just match them to the radio. the radio manual will have a similar wiring diagram as the car repair manual. after all the wires are matched properly and splied together, all you have to do is run a wire (i think i used a 12 or 14 gauge wire) from either the battery or if you can find one, a live wire from inside the passenger compartment. its a simple process, but obnoxiously tedious. -
Project: Rally Brat. comming this summer

previous owner also told me the clutch was blown, but after i took it off, it looks almost new. no dirt, can still read some writing on the friction surface. only thing left is either the transmission is blown or the clutch cable was adjusted horribly (i checked out the cable and no signs of damage). hopefully ill have the time tomorrow to pull the engine and give it the same thorough cleaning as the transmission -

so heres some pictures of recent work on the GL. dropped the transmission, and cleaned all the nasty greasey dirt off it, and spend about 2 hours with a wire brush scrubbing off the surface corrosion and whatever dirt the power washer couldnt spray off. -

zmarrott replied to ShagginWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
they did make a cyclops grill set up for i think 83 and 84, but its worthless with the winch blocking the whole grill -
That hood scoop: i like it. now i know which scoop im putting on mine when the time comes for my build

check to see if the fan has any damage to the blades as this could cause an unusual amount of noise. annother possability is the bearing

intruiging idea, but honestly i dont like the look of a bobed brat. and when it comes to rust, i will be stripping the brat down to frame, fixing/replacing all rust spots and re-assembling. my plans for the brat will likely take me years to complete, but that is something im definitely willing to do. -

dang. thats the one bed trim piece that really needs to be replaced on my brat. it looks like something caught it really bad while being pulled out of the bed -
reguarding your door speakers, it all depends on speaker size. my brat has 4.5 inch pioneers in the doors that dont interfere with the window at all. and were the duct taped kenwoods in factory holes or custom cut holes?

that i havent been able to find out yet. that cluth is bad so i havent even driven it yet. when it comes to finding the correct axel, where in the vin number are parts dealers refering to? for the gl i see a vin: 4 and a vin: 5 selection for parts and both numbers are in the vin oh, and i accidentally put 83 instead of 85 for the topic title

i recently purchased an 85 GL hatch and i found this in the engine bay. how bad for the axel is this? im rather inexperienced in working on subarus unfortunately.

so i have a 1985 subaru GL hatchback, and the clutch blew. due to the variety of setups subaru made for that era, i have no idea which clutch to buy.its a ea81 with a 5 speed front wheel drive transmission

ill do my best to get some pictures of the bad spots, but the reason the project starts this summer mis cuz my brat is on the other side of the country. im going to go get it in june. i will post pictures as i recieve them from my parents. the hatch i have access to so ill be posting pictures of it soon. -
So i guess this is my pre-build thread to see peoples ideas and any possable tips reguarding the restoration phase of the brat. my brat unfortunatley needs a lot of body work. however i found a very clean 85 GL hatch that i can take just about the whole front end off of. end product will hopefully have a wrx/sti driveline (or maybe something a bit more valuable, but that all depends on if i can find it). the GL will likely recieve the brat's current driveline which would be an upgrade from 2 wheel front to 2/4wheel dual range. the brat literally has all the rust spots you would expect froma neglected brat (though the frame looked good last i checked). any tips on body repair for the rear end (in the bed and the rear sill that almost doesnt exist anymore) and people that might be selling the bed chrome for a 2nd gen as mine is in questionable condition.

1985 subaru gl and 1986 subaru brat gl
zmarrott replied to zmarrott's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i hope the windshield is the same. thats really the only glass parts that NEEDS replacement. someone had been running dead wiper blades on it for quite a while, so ive got two good arches going across the front -
1985 subaru gl and 1986 subaru brat gl
zmarrott posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So, i have a 1986 Brat GL that i recieved as a gift from in the family that is in depressingly sad condition. the engine runs, but has a phenominal time starting up, havent seen any problems with the tranny and 4 wheel. recently my mom was driving it and one wheel seized from a bad bearing(all 4 are since replaced), there is the all too common wheel well rust in the bed, both fenders and the hood are beyond repair and need to be replaced. drivers fender has a dent that interferes with the door and has rusted into its bent form, the passenger fender was attacked by a bear (not joking. both on my brat and my brothers outback legacy, the passenger fender got bit and bent out). and the hood has an odd bit of rust in the under frame of it. irrepairable, and i have no idea how it got there . interior is also in sad condition, but i dont need to type out annother paragraph on that. Now, in a random stroke of luck, i found a 1985 GL hatchback (2 wheel drive) that is the same generation body styling . and the even better thing about it; NO RUST . it lived in arizona all its life so it has the standard arizona car accessories such as; the awesome faded paint look, that is now a matte finish also. the oh, so, popular cracked dash and just overall rubber parts dry rotting. so my question is, just how much of the GL am i able to transplant into the brat? considdering the brat has been a New England car for most, if not all, of its life, i want to eliminate as much rust as possable. fenders and hood are a must, but do the doors match? windshield? i will upload pictures soon side note: i dont have access to my brat at the moment, due to it being on the opposite side of the country, but im going to get it this summer
