need help diagnosing cooling system stuff
Frank B replied to davidv's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You didn't mention a 10,000 ft volcano! -
Well, I do plan on doing the 6 lug conversion on the hubs, but I want to get a set of hubs and rear disc set up first and do it all at once. But for now, the car just needs to get me thru winter, and the 14's I have will get me better tires. The rims are not to great to scrap if I screw it up, so I may try it. Thanks for the replies.

I like the idea of having 6 lug wheel on a sube, and I would like to do just that for my hatch. But, I really don't have the time to drill the hubs so I am looking at drilling a set of wheels to fit the 4 lug hubs. I have a set of 6 lug 14" wheels that came off of my 87 Isuzu P'up to drill. The question is this, I know I can drill the wheels, and I have access to a drill press and the correct size bit, But what kind of lug nuts are you guys using?? The holes will not have the countersunk shape for a standard lug to center up in. Thanks

need help diagnosing cooling system stuff

Will it continue to pump out the coolant untill there is no more? Or will it only pump out a little then stabalize? Is your overflow tank overfilled? Does it do it only when it's hot, or does it begin at start up? The system is designed to allow for expansion of the coolant, the rad cap releases pressure at a set psi(usually written on the cap), and excess coolant will flow into the overflow, or expansion tank. Usually, if the system is overfilled, the coolant level will stabilize. It will usually look as if you need some coolant because the rad isn't completely full. But that space)air) left in the top of the rad by not filling it completly up, allows room for expansion. Hopefully this is all that is happening. -

Cooling system HELP!! '92 Loyale BAFFLING!!
Frank B replied to asdf56's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is the water pump pumping? Can you see the coolant flowing thru the rad as the engine is running? I hate to ask, but is the thermostat installed properly? The large end with the spring mounted towards the engine? Did you get all the air out when you filled up the cooling system? Are any of the hoses collapsed shut(flat) before you open the rad cap? -
Crap!! What am i doin wrong???

It is possible that the old seal has worn a groove in the steel shaft. Does it look ok? Some parts stores can get repair sleeves to put on shafts to remedy that problem, but I'm not sure if one is made for that size shaft and seal. It would be worth your time to measure the shaft OD and the seal ID and have them look thru the books, if that's the problem. -
Ignition switch removal, Hatchback
Frank B replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks, I have a source for the switch locally, I just picked a brake booster with master cylinder off of a car and I'll just go back and get the switch. The man has three pre-loyale wagons, one hatch, and two loyale style cars. -
Can the lock and tumbler be replaced or does the entire switch need to come off of the column? I hope there is some trick to it.

Ok, My mommy's car is having problems. It keeps blowing an unlabeled fuse, and the AT oil light will flash. It all started a few days ago when she had parked the car at a store, left it running with the AC on to comfort my Grandfather inside. After 15 minutes, the car dies. I go out there and find the blown fuse, replace it, and go on thinking maybe there was an overload on the charging system with the AC, and cooling fans on. A few days later, she is driving it, AT light blinks, car dies, fuse is blown. I read a post here about the Transfer Clutch Solonoid(?) or Duty Solonoid. Would this be that? I just replaced the tranny fluid and filter like 10,000 miles ago when she first got the car to help avoid problems. I may do it again with a synthetic. Here is the fuse, it should be a 30 amp, but 40 is all they had. Donate your $.02

Sounds like you need a spacer. I had a holley on an isuzu p'up and I ran a fuel pressure regulator at 2.5 psi. It ran great! But it wouldn't hurt to fine tune that to your car's liking.

And I'm diving in head first!!! I just picked a nice 85 hatchback 4WD, 4 speed DR today. It's a little rough around the edges, but it will come around nicely. What's in store for this stocker? I am planning on an EJ22 swap, and a lift. Porpably won't happen until spring, since I need the little wonder to get me around this winter!

about to buy a webber/holly
Frank B replied to BobBrumby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That IS a bargain. You can't get a new weber kit for under $300, and your getting it jetted and with a manifold. -
Well other than the manifold, drive belt, and fuel management, It would probably be in your better interest to start with a turbo engine. This way you have the block and internals designed for the forced induction. But you could easily get by with lower compression pistons, or just run low boost. But if your going thru all the trouble with the modifications to the induction set-up. you will want to run high boost to take FULL advantage of the supercharger. I believe the Eaton supercharger is on the buick 3800's too, as well as some Jaguar XJ6's, so they are available.

Aussie Hatch... Now ej22 Converted. (with pics)

Thanks. I have a 90 legacy in need of a tranny, but I may try to pick up an older model and use the legacy as a donor instead. Thanks again for the info. -

And, would the bolt pattern be the same for EA81 and EA82 tranny's(can't remember). Did you have any issues with the radiator mounting or hook up? Did you just add an in-line high psi fuel pump for the FI? Thanks -

So, has anyone here in the states have this template now? I'd be interested in it. -
Thanks for the replies guys. I know I'll have to match ratio's and I haven't even looked to see what it is yet. What kind of mods am I looking at here? Linkage? Electrical? Driveshaft length? I would rather tow it to a shop because I don't have the room to tear it down at home. I just wanted to know my options. Later

I recently purchased a 90 legacy wagon that hasn't fared too well, it has some rust issues, but that's expected to say the least! And a serious fluid leak from the tranny. It seems to be leaking from the front seal. The way it's leaking it will not build pressure to shift or drive with much power so maybe the front pump seal?? Anyway, if I can't be lucky enough to have the tranny rebuilt with success, what tranny's will fit this thing? XT6? Maybe up to a 98 legacy?? It's an AWD auto. Thanks
-
I just picked up a 90 legacy wagon, 2.2 auto AWD for $225.00. Good deal?? maybe, it's a bit rusty and leaks tranny fluid bad. I haven't had time to get under it but it looks like it's leaking from the front seal. I may just pull the tranny and have it rebuilt to avoid any further problems. Just wanted to say hello.

There are reports that there is a diesel EA81 powered forklift made for japan only. I have seen it posted here, try a search.

anyone wanna take a swing at this? NGK gapping Q
Frank B replied to Dennis ex24's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It may benefit from a colder plug. I see a lot of guys coming into the store(NAPA) that run a colder plug in their supercharged cars, mostly mustangs. -

Are XT6's really turbo ready??????
Frank B replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
but I think it's going to be left up to fate for me to get this project going. I allready have a bike project in my shed, and I was going to sell my '00 Dakota and get into another Soob, but I can't seem to sell it right now, bad timing I guess. I'm still going to get the Super cahrger, it's off of a 95 Jaguar XJR. An Eaton roots type. Can't be a bad move!
