  1. I am refering to the actual CV's and not the shaft beween them. A birfield in a Toyota looks like this: The weak spot on these use to be the bell. People fixed that by welding a small ring to the outside lip of them Then the guts starting to go and then Bobby Long started welding rings on them and cryo treatment of them. For the Toyota Axles this meant you could run 35"s -38" without failures. Now Bobby just released a new 30 spline chromoly birf that has been tested to be as strong as a 35 spline Dana 60 stuff. Also for the guys that are running U-joints in there axle. CTM came out with cyro u-joints that don't have needled bearings. They look kinda like this: Also I guess almost every professional motor sport now from indy cars to lawnmower racing uses cryotreatment of parts to make them stronger. Hence my question if anyone has tried this for you Subie Guys in making a strong CV. I also nee to admit that I don't know what the guts of a Soobie CV looks like. Can someone post or link a picture. a Broken one would also be nice to see...... Below is what a Stock Birfield looks like after they bust.....
  2. Just curious if any of you guys have tried Cryogentic Treatment of your CV's to make them stronger? Bobby Long (www.toyotasuperaxles.com) does this for the Birfield Joints on Toyotas and Samura's with GREAT sucess. Heck I'm running them in my Yota. And I'm just curious if the Subaru guys have tried anything like that... I guess my reasoning for asking is I HATE carnage on the trail and I'm really concerend about that if I buy and build a Subie.....
  3. See, I knew Mike took my comments the right way..... I'm not here to critize.... I'm here to learn and understand how other people wheel and build Subarus. And what it takes to modify one. Oh and yes I want to purchase a Subie, Just don't have the cash yet and still not sure what I want. So I'm still browsing around and trying to learn. When I get one you guys will know. One side of me want to go extreme (4 link front and rear with sami axles and a regeared sami T-case, heck maybe even a 7mge Toyota motor sitting nice and low on some wide 33") or just plain jan Standard issue stuff (EA81 Wagon, 3" lift and 28"). I'm just not sure...... I just hope you guys can put up with me asking silly questions..... since my background is wheeling Toyotas and Jeeps that cost 6-15K, Its hard for me to compare to 4wheeling Subies (1-2K). I would like to go on a trail ride (ride shotgun with someone) in a crowd of Subarus so I can see what they can really do with Subie parts. I've wheeled with Mike once but his is not really a a good comparision for judging subarus since it on soild axles.:-\
  4. Thanks for the pictures, that makes sense now. Both look pretty good but I think the aluminum is a better way to go.
  5. Okay, heres a picture of my subaru. (see picture below) Did you miss it, Here I will post it again.... Oh thats right I haven't bought one yet. Does that mean I can't comment........ But considering I've met Mike personally and chatted with him several times about 4wheeling and Subarus. I will have to assume Mike KNOWS I'm just screwing with him. And since my specialty is Toyotas with leaf spring suspension, i know I could help him out and have offered several times on improving his articulation. I would really like to see his Subaru flex more than just a stock Yota. Sure its great flex for a Soobie but really its not that much for a leaf sprung vehicle. So for that, IMO, its really not that much.... Anyways, Mike has built a very unique vehicle and I know he has put in countless hours doing it so I'm not bashing it, But it still could be improved on.
  6. Are you trying to show off????? I think you need to take it to a steel or concrete ramp to see what it can really do. Its hard to tell on dirt how much it actually flexes. BTW I know I could help you get more out of it.....
  7. I'm not sure how the hollow ones install but if you layed the hollow down on its side - Wouldn't the solid ones be stronger because they couldn't collapse like a hollow piece could. And then if you stood the hollow pieces up right compared to the solid ones, would have 100% of the surface area contacting the unibody for better support by lowering the contact pressure between the two surfaces. Or are the hollow ones boxed on all sides.....
  8. Thats too funny..... a lifted dented Subie around a bunch of Ricers... It does look surprisingly CLEAN.
  9. I run magnetic plugs in my Toyota (motor, tranny, transfer case, crawler box, front and rear diffs). I wouldn't have it any other way. They are also great for seeing if anything odd is going on. Another benefit on a Toyota is they have a socket head for a allen wrench instead of a large hex. Don't know what the Subie have since I don't have one yet.....
  10. Awe, that makes sense now......Thanks for clearing that up.
  11. How much did it cost? Also heres a stupid question.... I know BYB is Back Yard Boys but what does PK stand for?????
  12. When I talked to John last he said he could have a tranny gone thru and a phantom grip installed for around $600 ish.... Just found some interesting information about Diffs here: http://kmhafer.datsun510.com/Subaru.htm A very interesting read for anyone that is interested.
  13. So does anyone here run a Phantom Grip..... How does it compare to a OEM LSD??
  14. After reading Phantom Grips website: http://www.phantomgrip.com It appears that its only offered for the Hitachi R160 diffs (rear diff) for $300 but I heard that Mudrat79 can install these in the front diffs. Is this the same part number but just retro fitted to fit the front carrier? Does anyone have a good picture of both carriers side by side? Are they basically the same or WAY different Also is this the only aftermarket locker/LSD that is available for a Soobie? (not including factory LSD)
  15. So what year/model/mods makes the Ultimate Offroad Subura? I'm refering to what people can actually afford and is realistic rather than what everyone just dreams about....... For me I think a EA82, D/R 4wd, 3.90's, rear LSD diffs, 28-30" Tires, 3-4" Lift, disc brakes. But ER-27 or EJ power would be nice but probably break too much stuff.
  16. Thanks, thats a bit far for me to drive...... 6+ hours
  17. Come on guys........ do you know that almost ALL AC compressors say that. It stands for Suction and Discharge.
  18. MorganM - I totally understand that reenfocing the unibody will be nessecary. But I'm curious on how the body lines and unibody lines, line up. That would be my only real area of concern. And welding sheetmetal is really pretty easy if its fitted properly before welding and everything is prepped. Oh and you also need rust free metal. So I guess my questions still stands. Has anyone ever done bobb'd a wagon or quad cab'd a wagon?
  19. A lot of guys with Toyotas perfer the Aisins and some swap to the Weber 32/36 and some even bigger. On the Toyotas there is a lot of monkey motion to get the 32/36 to fit From what I remember it take one spacer and two adapters with the stock intake. Or with a Offenhauser intake you only need the one spacer. But again - Anything is possible.
  20. Yeah, For my 4runner I normally have this for recover gear: HS9500i Winch with 115 ft or 5/16 Dia poly rope (3) 3/4" shackles (1) 2 1/2" hitch shackle mount 6 ft tree strap 30 ft recover strap 3/8" dia snatch block 2000 lbs web come-a-long Axe, folding tree limb saw, shovel, 60" Hi-Lift. For a subie I think I would carry this: 2500 lb ATV Winch <-maybe on a hitch plate for front and rear mounting (2) 5/8" Shackles 6 ft tree saver 2000 lbs web come-a-long 5/16" dia snatch block Axe, folding tree limb saw, shovel End hijack - So has anyone took a EA81 or EA82 and made a quad cab brat/baja?
  21. MorganM - Your right on the 4runner being for 'extreme' stuff and a Subie for 'mild 'stuff but I would like a Subie be set up so I can FIND the extreme stuff. And to do that I might have to get thru some difficult terrain to get there. Does that make since? Oh I'm also thinking about adding a winch to a Subie so I can deal with the rougher stuff.... Zapar - FAWK'N SWEET! <- hope I can say that here...
  22. For the glass in the rear of a wagon, I was just thinking Lexan or plexy glass....... I've also thought about a baja conversion........ Just like a mini quad cab and then I could chop the rear to just about any length. All 2wd Toyota's (except Tacoma Prerunner's) are 5 Lug. All 4wd Toyota Pickups/4runners, Taco's are 6 lug.
  23. bushbasher - NOW thats what I'm talk'n about.....What year/model of Subie? Got Pictures ??? {edit} Oh wait, thats with dual cases huh.....But still along the same idea I was thinking.
