An easy test for air lock/air on my '90 Legacy was to get the car warmed up and open the bleeder screw/valve on the passenger side of the radiator. If steam comes out, you've got it; if coolant flows out, you don't. Look for a post by Setright to replace/fill the coolant w/the best results. Good luck and hope it's not the HG.

Nipper - I tried the D3 and it's still there, but not as noticeable as when the car is loafing along in OD @ 35-40 mph. Also, at idle the car shakes a bit - not like it's going to die or anything's going to shake loose. But it's definitely not a smooth idle. But the rpms change very little if @ all @ idle.

Noahdl88 - Yes, part throttle is when it occurs. Driving city streets @ 30-40 is most noticeable; also @ freeway - 65-75. If the TC were engaging/disengaing wouldn't the rpms change, too? If it were the solenoid is that in the tranny? Also, at idle the car shakes a bit - not like it's going to die or anything's going to shake loose. But it's definitely not a smooth idle. The '95 is gone ('97 OB now) along w/the receipt for the repair. But it wasn't a pump...i want to say it was a "clutch" in the tranny, but doesn't sound quite right. Torque bind was also fixed w/the repair. Also, I lost reverse after having the tranny flushed. The shop was/is pretty cool...small w/3-4 mechs that know their stuff, and don't sell you what you don't need.

I also had the same issue on a '95 Legacy wagon - no reverse-went forward fine. $900 to fix....and I'm totally drawing a blank on what they replaced. Somewhere on USMB is a fairly good description of a DIY replacement. Here's some more info: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48411&highlight=replace+legacy+trans
