Help finding the headlight retractor diode
I finally found it - it's in the FSM in the part where it shows all the labelled connector placements. The diode is wrapped up in a large wiring harness stuffed behind the fuse panel, it's not looking easy to get too. I'll hack the parts car to find out. I'll check those jokers out rob, that's not where I thought the timer was, i'm not even sure what it looks like now. The only other thing I haven't replaced is the high beam switch, but I'm highly doubtful that would keep the headlights from retracting no matter what state that is in.

Help finding the headlight retractor diode

Impreza drive line disconnect
idosubaru replied to phillys14's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwhat i typically do is unbolt it where it meets the rear diff. EJ vehicles have a nice plate right in front of that that will hold the driveshaft for you essentially. all i do is remove the 4 bolts and nuts and that's it. there will be some light metal against metal sound, but when you bolt it all back up it's no big deal. if you're just towing once, i'd do that. if you're doing this often, like you're a big RV person, then you want to actually remove the rear half of the driveshaft - 8 bolts (4 on each end) with the plate needing to be removed as well.

Subaru 99 oil in coolant reserve need help
idosubaru replied to jenn7's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFirst thing you need to verify exactly what is going on. Are you positive it's oil? If that much oil is getting in it, then you'd notice SIGNIFICANT loss of oil in your engine oil - on the dipstick. I doubt you're seeing that, so I doubt it's engine oil. The coolant reservoir/radiator may just be dirty and getting blackened in there? Or you're positive it's something else? You need to find where it's mixing (engine or trans) or what else is loosing fluid. If it's NOT mixing then something else is loosing fluid for it to end up in the reservoir. Find out what is loosing fluids - engine or trans. I'm thinking what he's thinking - the radiator may need replaced. The engine was replaced once, so it was probably overheated which does bad things to hoses and radiators too. So not out of the question for the radiator to be bad. Have you checked your Automatic Transmission Fluid level? Of course it might not be low, it may have coolant in it? Once fixed you'll want to clean any contaminated systems - radiator, engine, trans, etc, whichever were mixing. That being said, the "japanese" motors are nothing special and not the best solution in my opinion, i've had them come with special features like blown head gaskets. what good is a low mileage motor if it has blown head gaskets? In their defense they offered me two new headgaskets....for ME to install:rolleyes:

02 OBW Exhaust Options
idosubaru replied to fleming442's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhat motor EJ25 or H6? I'm exploring ideas for new exhaust for my H6 OBW. I swa an ebay header for the H6 this week, and saw the EJ25 stuff too. I searched and found very little info on folks doing this. I saw on the outback boards where some folks said they bought it, but never installed it and never followed up. That was it. I've seen threads where folks replaced the mufflers with all sorts of stuff and everyone had good comments on doing it with a variety of different mufflers, even on the H6 which has the goofy bypass valve actuator thing in it. So apparently it's no big deal to not have it.

Harbor Freight shipping is always horendous
Thanks for the offer Dave, luckily I don't need anything. Yeah I have a disc brake kit that was a total POS, it broke the first time I used it and I hardly put any strain on it. Amazing how easily it broke, everything else has been useable though the picks are a little weak.

My first Impreza
idosubaru replied to glh1975's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBase model legacy's aren't very nice but Legacy's have more options if you climb the model ladder. Talk about "float" the lower end legacy's aren't very nice to drive, like Connie I think is referring to by "boat". The GT's, LSi's, and OBW's are way nicer than the lower end Legacy's. Handle well, nicely trimmed, leather, heated seats, power moon roofs, heated side view mirrors, all sorts of nice options and trims like that. Impreza's handle very nicely, a small, light, short, and nimble car. The impreza's don't have much upperward mobility in terms of trim and such. They tend to be not as nicely trimmed and have more of a "plastic" pieced together interior where the Legacy seems more solid and holds it's age better in the older models. I like Impreza's better than the lower end legacy's, but they don't have the niceties of the higher end Legacy's. So it just depends if you like that stuff or not. Personally I don't mind the rattling, noises, and looseness of the impreza's. Car noises don't bother me. New Legacy's still have all sorts of options, accessories, H6 engine, VDC, etc that the impreza doesn't get.

Harbor Freight shipping is always horendous
Be warned and plan ahead. Shipped July 21 - Delivery on August 3rd. Luckily it's nothing I need but man TWO WEEKS!?!?! Are you serious? And it's been like this every single time I've ordered - multiple weeks for delivery. I totally dig what a great fit it is to actually have a tool that I normally wouldn't buy because I would only use it once or twice but that's pathetic for a company with their kind of exposure.

You'll see no less than %100 matching threads in all 5 cases of "similar threads"! Familiarize yourself with the search function as there's a great thread detailing everything about this - why they fail, your options for replacement, pictures, and exactly how to do it.

Subaru is a PREMIUM Car
idosubaru replied to The Dude's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXright on connie, i wasn't saying people don't like trucks!! only that there are plenty of reasons to not own one..or own a second vehicle...etc. really, no way to attach a hitch, very bizarre indeed, i'll keep my eye out for one and get a look.

Subaru is a PREMIUM Car
idosubaru replied to The Dude's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've got an H6 OBW, Impreza, XT6, and a Truck, and can see why he'd want to tow with his car. I can't stand driving my truck. I don't like the way it handles and how huge it is. I like the truck, but it's solely for hauling cars, everything else is hauled by my cars. I do see your point, but a jump in vehicle size/ability seems reasonable if towing is that important. Impreza's are a kind of "entry level" Subaru and not known for all the bells, whistles, and capabilities of the larger counterparts. That being said - lots of folks are towing boats, motorcycles...and even other cars, with older gen Subaru's. Now, I completely frown upon someone willing to tow a car, but my point is I'm sure an Impreza can handle some towing just fine regardless of what it's rated for. Particularly considering where you live - down south, no snow, flat land, you can tow all day long. I wouldn't worry too much about the CVT. Easy for me to say when you will have long forgotten this post if you have problems in the future.

Really dumb idea ?
very good point. Companies don't make money by building them heavier than the state building codes (based on snow loads, roof loads, hurricane, etc). So, as big as that bottom chord may look (2 by whatever), it's still probably not that much more than absolutely necessary by code. There is sophisticated software that allows companies to build them with as few board feet and cheapest kind of lumber available. Trusses do fail and it's always because of loads they see or people cutting them "I sure would like to put something right where that 2x4 is.....zzzzzzzzzzz.....crack....."

My Legacy 2.2 has started interfering??
idosubaru replied to Hocrest's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXquit calling my friend dave an idiot. i was wondering what this would all amount too! how bizarre-ishly funny! hey, awesome for a simple fix, though im' sure the frustration got old.

Really dumb idea ?
My first engineering job was designing engineered building trusses. Those guys are right on it, provide some cross bracing - meaning try and distribute the load across as much of the truss as you can and particularly more than just one truss. I assume they're 2 foot on center (2 feet apart)? You'll be fine to do this but it does depend a bit on spacing, design, and if there are any other loads. Not that I wonder about once...but you know how it goes..oh i did it once before, i'll do my EJ engine this time, oh my tractor engine needs to come out, yeah the trusses again! and then you have a few hundred pounds of steering racks, axles, and other subaru goodies up there....just be careful and mindful if you start doing it a lot. The only red flag I'd have is if they are spaced more than 2 feet (typical of agricultural layouts and occassionally others). They're always the ones falling down when we get a couple feet of snow in MD.

Timing Belt Tooth Count / Tensioner Play
idosubaru replied to msmithmmx's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou're dealing with an interference engine, I would install a perfect tensioner and a perfect tensioner only. Particularly considering the next belt change is 100,000 miles. I had a sloppy tensioner on an interference EJ22 and off the car it was tight as new. On the car it had slop and the belt was slapping around, glad it didn't let the belt slip. The price of a new one is really annoying, I do understand that, but for such a new car it's really not worth the risk.

More power out of my Legacy
idosubaru replied to The Chad's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI asked and searched around here and other forums about exhaust, I was looking for MPG improvements though, but got almost zero feedback on Legacy exhauts. I can find more info on older gen stuff for some reason than EJ stuff for exhaust. The XT6 can have a good highway mpg jump with better exhaust, have never found any info like that about the newer stuff. If you find anything else out, do post it here. Yeah you can run either of those through it, it's not going to hurt anything. If the oil seems particularly dirty, possible for an elderly driven car that doesn't get many miles or any highway miles, then you might rethink any long oil change intervals at least for a bit.

phantom grip lsd
I've looked into this before and couldn't find many decent reviews. I imagine it's because performance minded folks are buying them, not folks like me wanting to put one in a daily driver. I saw too many issues with them to pull the trigger on it. It was probably not the product so much as the installers and useage they get put through, but without any clarification I wasn't going to chance it on a daily driver.

Rack and Pinion Steering bad???
idosubaru replied to murphsubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf it was "like the wheels are shaking" - did you check the wheels/lug nuts? Have you ever had axle work done? because if you have that's likely to be the problem - an after market axle. Or have you checked your axles recently, most particularly the inner joint close to the tran given your symptoms. Look to see if a boot is cracked. Check the ball joint, tie rod, and steering rack boots. Doesn't require doing anything but looking under the car. Look for torn boots on any of them.

2002 forester EJ251>EJ22 swap
right on, like i said I can't speak to Euro verses US differences, I'm only assuming they're very similar to what we see here and when/how changes are made. careful observation/measurement could verify whether the intake manifolds will swap, that's the only definitive thing I can think of.

cam shaft sensor
idosubaru replied to babyfacefitz's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthat's how they roll. it's based on their book times, which probably say to remove stuff that doesn't need to be removed (and the mechanics wont' on a well known part like this). probably also charged diagnostic fees - read code, clear code, etc. might have been the crank sensor those prices were for - that takes 20 minutes instead of 10!!!!:lol:

axle issues
idosubaru replied to SubaruAlliance's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi've swapped legacy and impreza axles many times, i don't think those platforms are any different. the engines, trans, suspension are all intechangeable for the most part. probably with impreza FWD are the 23 splined axles. but that axle should work fine. maybe it just needs worked loose for a little extension like he said above?

tips on disassembling a strut?

EJ22 in to 97 Outback
idosubaru replied to simpreza2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy guess is a vacuum leak. Take carb cleaner, brake cleaner, starting fluid to the engine bay - leaks show up in 10 seconds with a few squirts. What year EJ22? you said you used the EJ25 intake..do you mean manifold, because those arent' interchangeable?
