  1. I converted my 88 GL from 2WD to 4WD. Lots of work but oh so worth it! I didnt have the luxury of a donor car sitting next to me but access to a junkyard instead. Starting in the rear you should grab the entire rear main subframe as one assembly. Put jackstands under the main subframe tube so it is secured against the body. This way you can pull all the bolts from subframe to body and not worr yabout it falling on your head. They are tough buggers so have your breaker bar and cheater ready! Remove all bolts holding subframe to body but leave the 1 bolt on each side holding the shock/strut bottom to the outer control arm. Now you can carefully remove the jackstands and your rear main subframe assembly will be hanging by those 2 bolts on the struts. THis will make it easy for you to slowly remove those bolts and let each side drop while you are at a safe distance INstallation is reverse order !_! Only funny thing is your 2WD unibody wont have holes for the rear diff hanger. There are divits where they SHOULD be drilled out. So youll need to drill them out. I didnt even bother with a tap/die set; just used some tiaperd thread tip bolts, hammered them in a 1/4" and tapped self-taped the hole. Still holding strong! Onto the transmission. Grab the whole 5speed dual range, driveshaft (from a wagon!) transmission crossmember, linkages and linkage brackets to the body. Also nab the interior plastic pieces around the 4WD shifters and such; they should all snap into place where your 2WD junk is. Minor triming with a dremel is needed but nothing drastic. I didnt even have to notch anything, just trim some edges a bit. Tranny swap is prolly the easiest part. ONce all the bolts are free the thing still wont fall out (dontforget the 3/16" roll punch and drive out the pins on the inner DOJs on the axles!). I usually have a rope/chain tied to the rear of the tranny aned someone pulling on it while I'm standing on the strut towers with a rope around the tranny and my shoulders. I bounce the trainny while the other dude pulls and she will fall right out. Use a tire or moving blanket for a softer landing I like the moving blanket cuzs then I can just pull on teh blanket to get it out from undrer the car. OH forgot the driveshaft hehe. You wont have holes for your center carier bearing on the driveshaft. Me? I just welded the sucker in. Some people dont like that idea so there are other solutions. You can drill a 5/8" hole on each side upinto the unibody and use big washers and locking nuts with extended bolts. You can weld in some custom brackets and then bolt the bearing housing to the brackets. If you have a large budget you could get your 2 piece shaft made into a single piece shaft for about $300+ I'm sure I missed some details but this should get you started! Good luck! And while you are in there; might as well install a BYB 3" lift from PK Davis !_!
  2. You certainly can convert it over; but why? FUel Injection is superior. Dont belive all the hype around carbs Especially in an All Terrain Vewhicle where you will be at extreem angles and such. But to each their own; if you are more comfortable with a carb setup do it up! As for making a solid frame thats not nutty! SOmeone allready had a shop do that for them. Apparently he just welded the 2 main subframes together making a solid frame. I would suggeswt doing this with the body still ON. That way the length between the subframes is corerct (for things like the driveshaft!) and you wont bev struggeling to mearsire up all sides and have proper angles etc etc etc. I'd weld the subframes together and then pull off the body. This is a unibody, no solid frame. So when you take off the subframes you have to seperate assemblies. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!
  3. Dang! I Should have got those out of Arch's Impulse RS before he junked it! That's why I didnht like the XT seats. Headrest hits me in the back of the neck!
  4. Those look pretty nice. I think youll be 'treading' on new ground buying these My connection right now is very slow; how much are they asking for them per tire?
  5. Looks pretty restrictive on the air flow over the radiator with the body on. How does she cool with the body off? Sweet ride by the way, well done.
  6. I'd say something got unplugged that you didnt expect. MAF plugged in? All vacume hoses pluged in or pluged up? Tripple check anything in the general areas you were working.
  7. Hopefully it's just the spark plugs or plug wires. Could also be a fuel injector thats starting to go south. Possibly something else! Hard to diagnose but we'll try! Is your Check Engine Light (CEL) on ? Has it come on and then went off? Do you hear a slight 'pop' or 'thud' coming from the engine bay as it stumbles and struggles? Engine ever stall on you? ANY other symtoms you can think of?
  8. Sounds like yall had a blast! Glad yall got out safe. Checking out the aftermath shots now It all makes sense now... why Deathatch was asking about a full roll cage! LOL Peace
  9. The cam gears are simple as pie. THere are just 3 bolts holding each one on. There is some fancy tool that holds the gear while you tighten/loosen the bolts. I just break them loose while the belts are still on. Crank gears are mostly held on by the pulley and main crank bolt. THere is also a key hodling them on. Youll notice the gears are sloted and there is a little metal key in there. Sorry it's been so long since I had to pull those off i cant think of any tricks Just hack it !_! Shouldnt need any special puller or tools. GOod luck!
  10. Still a few things to investigate tha tcould be culprits. As noted above exhuast leaks can cuase it, timing or slop in the distributor, slop in the timing belts, out of tune carb, who knows We should just hook up and hack it up! I'm sure some digging around will find the culprit. Arch would be a big help cuz he's worked a lot on carbed EA82s. I stick to the SPFI
  11. Solid advice Tim. If you don't/can't replace the whole pump you can buy just the impeller shaft and a full seal kit (as 2 seperate items). Usually the pump housing itself its good to go. It's the impeller shaft or the impeller itself that wears down. At a minimum I would reseal it with a full gasket set for the pump. Comes with the Mickey Mouse gasket Tim refers too as well as seals for the impeller shaft. Wish I knew the part number for the impeller shaft but call a dealership and see if you can get one.
  12. That's a dang nice install GravelRX and it even looks like the colors matche pretty close! You should copy and paste this up into a new article. Look up above on the nav bar and on the second row you could add it there under the USRM or Auto Tech. Personally I sat in the XT seats and they felt uncomfortable. Arch installed them in his EA81 hatch and I sat in those also. Still prefer my EA82 GL seats. The head rest really botherd me on the XT seats. Anyway you should post it up! This question comes up pretty offten
  13. Wut? Which is betteh? Thems fight'n words! Who cares! Drive whichever one you like. They all have fualts they all have perks. I like my EA82 SPFI becuase its Fuel Inected, high compression, eficcient, and SIMPLE. People like what they like and defend it with honor
  14. Does not really matter what engine it is. It's an internal combustion engine and just like all combustion engines you drive it till it blows up. Love it, rage it and when it breaks you fix it. Take good care of it and it takes good care of you. They all blow up they all run well when properly maintained and anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something !_!
  15. Damn I'll have to find one of those hitatchi feedback cars and get the spacers. Torx kinda suck I had pretty good luck with using a torx socket adapter and a big breaker bar. A torch would have helped
  16. Chill out yo; he didnt say they dont exist, or its impossible...
  17. Ya plugging them is prolly the best solution. I had to use those lame spacers with the metal tubes coming out when I put an EA81 Y pipe on my EA82. It was pretty easy hammering them falt and welding them shut but they were off the vehicle. Kinda hard to hammer them flat when they are still in the car. Getting them off is a major PITA too. Have to use a big torx socket and a lot of elbow grease! Chekc your private messages too !_!
  18. I understand that might scare you and you wouldnt want to run them. Personally I'm not affrid of a little mud on my bearings
  19. Question timing belts all you want but they work just fine offroad. Notice that EJ22 powerd rockcrawler? Timing belt...
  20. There is a code for the coolant temp sensor but I dont think that sensor runs your guage. I belive there are 2 sperate sensors, one for the ECU which would throw a code, and another sending unit just for the gauge. Could be the guage or the sending unit. If you are handy with a multimeter you could do an OHMs resistance test on the guage sending unit. Dealership should be able to provide values for you to refer against. Or just have a mechanic test the sending unit and guage for you Hope this helps!
  21. Sounds like its time for a new (or slightly used ) dizzy. Classic signs were the jumpy tach and poping exhuast (due to the timing being WAY off)
  22. Yep time to upgrade your PCV system. Basicly it just gets rid of those 2 wussy small lines and replaces it with one big fat line like the other side. I got what I needed for free at a junkyard off a Loyale (they already got the updated PCV hoses) All you need is the hoses and plastic fittings.
  23. Jack it through the ROOF Glad to have some new recruits, welcome aboard mates !_!
  24. Rice county of Minnesota has CLOSED Roy's Playground untill their list of demands are met and they say Roy can open it back up. The demands are high and so far not a lot has been done. I knew about it earlier but I wanted to go to the last 2 Minnesota 4WD Association meetings to get factual updates on the situation. Looks like a comitee is beeing set up amoung 3 ATV enthisiast groups in the Faribuolt area in Rice county to try and get Roy's back open. Was hoping to hear dates of planned action at lastnights meeting but it sounds like they are still in the rally up and brain storm phase... For those who are still interested in doing some midwest offroading let's pick a place I guess Here is what I was thinking but feel free to post where you want to go and we'll vote on it. Aug 27-28 is a big offroading day at Dresser in Wisconsin. It's just north of the twin cities right accross the river near St. Croix WI. I asked the guy putting on the event about the terrain and he said I'd do fine out there and there are bypass trails for EVERY run. There is a junkyard in WI between New Richmond and Somerset. They allow you to DRIVE in and all around. We could do a day of junkyarding and subaru sacavging !_! Lots of sand and a turbo subarus We could also go to a state forest. For now state forests are still open to ORV usage so long as we abide by the rules. I am signed up for the DNR Inventory and Recatagorization Project under the MN4WD Association to inventory 2 state forests just north of the twin cities. Basicly we'd just go offroading all day and inventory the trails that we'd want to keep. BOTTOM LINE: Do you still wanna plan a day of midwest offroading? Where do YOU want to go? What weekend works best for YOU? Peace ================================= Who's up for some midwest offroading? Trying to round up some people for a day of offroading. This will be at Roy's Playground. It is outside Faribault MN which is just north of the MN/IA border. The terrain and trails range from very easy to difficult. A stock 4WD Subaru would do just fine yet plenty of stuff to keep us modified Subarus busy If anyone needs to stay the night there is State Park camping near Northfield (Just north of Roy's) and Faribault is a pretty big town with motel/hotels. I can look up parks or hotels if anyone needs them. Attached below are some maps. You can come north or south on Interstate 35 and exit off at HWY 60 @ Faribault. Then head East into town. Follow the maps till you are on County Road 20. Once you are on 20 its smooth sailing! You can't miss it becuase you can see the park from CR 20. Turn right onto CR 29 / Donaldson Trail and you are there! Let me know if the maps are not clear enough and I can do some better ones. Resizing them down to 640x480 made them harder to read. Please choose on of the following dates that works best for you. We'll tally up the total votes and see what date wins. JUL 24-25 AUG 7-8 AUG 21-22 AUG 28-29
