Tires and wheels and tires and wheels?
MorganM replied to TheMeatWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You can put on 26"s with out a lift; go BIG With a 3"BYB lift you can fit 30"x9.5" and 15" pug rims. I'm quite happy so far with 29"x8.5". Gave me more room to turn and between the tire and spring seat on the strut. The lift itself gains you little hight. What the lift is enabeling you to do is put on bigger tires. This is where you gain seriouse clearance from ground to lowest point. With those 30"s on I had 12" lowest point clearance in the rear and 11" up front. Haven't measured it with the 29"s on yet. For rims I had money at the time and a good contact. Threw down $150 for a set of 15" steels. I went with steel so they wouldnt dent as easy and would be easier to repair when I do beat them up. I've dented alloys before and it was tough getting it repaired. Good luck -
Rims are dirt cheap around here at the yards also; but there simply are not Pugs in the yards. People hardly bought old subarus around here let alone some old wussy euro car Ive only seen 2 in the last 4 years at local yards. None of them were 504s or 505s

Dual Range into an '87 GL10 Turbo Manual?
MorganM replied to sandman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I love finding that stuff. Guess that's why I keep those things myself and pass them with the vehicles as I get rid of them. -
strange thing that happaned
MorganM replied to 86subaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'd start with replacing the fuse. On the inside of your fuse cover panel is a chart. Fuses usually run several devices. I've heard of getting hair line cracks in them. Just replace it Turbone is dead on too with the fusible links. Same deal but a different type of fuse. Up under your hood by your coolant overflow tank is a small black box. Pop the top off and make sure they all look mint, the spade ends are on tight, and they are not broken/burnt in the middle. Let us know if these dont turn up any results. Could be some other things... -
Where to next with 85 GL wagon
MorganM replied to lavo96's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Forget that lame webber. Get some All Terrain or Mud Terrain tires Is that a BYB 3" lift or custom job? What rims did you put on exactly? Thx -
Dual Range into an '87 GL10 Turbo Manual?
MorganM replied to sandman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I do not know if the dual range t.case can be bolted onto your single range tranny. Given the way Subaru does things; I would think yes its swapable. Even if it was I'd still just swap the transmissions. You already have everything you need there to accept the dual range trans. They are pretty easy to come by for a reasonable price. Having an extra 4WD transmission would be nice Especially one you KNOW will bolt in and drive. -
Couple reasons really. Sometimes its just supply and demand. Gotta get what you can get. Others like to run more meat and less metal for the tires/wheels. Sure its an inch difference in diameter but you can just make that inch up at the tires. I got 15" steel pugs cuz I have an awsome selection of make/model tires to choose from. Steel rims hold up stronger and are cheaper/easier to get straightend out; unlick aluminum alloys I've had in the past. Suposidly bigger rims means better handeling but I can't really judge handeling 'performance' (read: lack of) with my lifted wagon. It's also an extra inch in steel BLING yo

Yep; they were an optional upgrade. Prolly wouldnt know it if you saw them in a junkyard unless you KNEW or you measured them. wonder how many sets have been smelted down and turned into cheap american beer cans

Hard wiring the fan to the battery?
MorganM replied to lepetitprince's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Same here. I only need to kick on the fan when come off the highway to a stop light or have been climbing hills and have to come to a stop. Just tooling around town I dont need it often really. That adjustable temp switch sounds cool. Got a URL ? -
89 SPFI Wagon Running Like Crap
MorganM replied to Scrub2k's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Id start up front where the accident was. Fix that radiator GOOD (prolly replace it). Last thing you need is to over heat her. There is any number of things that could have happend from a front end collission. Go over everything up front and if it stil lruns like crap lets start narrowing it down. peace -
This June 12th in Minnesota some people will be getting together to do some offroading. There is a guy with some land south of Northfield that the lets ppl drive on. Just pay him $10 for the day or $30 for the year. The grounds are whats left of an old gravel pit I belive. Have not been there myself yet. Suposidly the terrain is easy to moderate. Seen pictures of stock vehicles there having fun. I'm sure there are some other harder areas though. Some guys from the MN-Jeep msg board will be there. Hopefully the nice ones and not the lame 'its a jeep thing you wouldnt understand' dorks. This is pretty informal so bring your own food and drink. Prolly meet up after 1:00 at the pits. Here are some directions. Let me know if they are unclear as I didnt make them. I'll post back with more info later. GOtta run to my surgery and I'm already running late!

For sure man! This was a short notice outing. There is a little MN offroad gathering coming up. Looks like weekend of June 12 ? Ill make a post in the Meet and Greet about it.

Tricks/Tips for an 87 GL
MorganM replied to blacklabel's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have no power steering and 29" tires. It's nothing. Both of my cars have no power steering and its really not hard to turn at all. Especially if you are moving at all. If you had a heavy engine and tranny it would be a bigger deal. Damn near impossible to turn at a stop with my '81 buick and a 472 under the hood. Was really hard too on my wife's 91 buick and a 3.3 v6 sitting on top of the front wheels.
