Corrosion on battery terminals
MorganM replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Clean the posts with a wire brush. Use battery terminal grease to prevent it from reforming. Caution! Don't breath in the dust or get that crap in yoru eyes! Wear some gloves when you clean it off also. -
Why dont subes have free-wheeling hubs
MorganM replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's your opinion becuase not everyone hates KIA. I love my KIA Rio. It's a 2002 and much better than the 2001 and 2000 models. I have yet to have any major work done to it, there is a 10yr/100,000 power train warrenty (5yr/60,000mi bumper to bumper), it gets 30mpg with my lead foot driving, and goes 90mph on a regular basis; maxing out a 110mph. My car payments are $162/mo and insurance is $99/mo for it; that's cheap as hell for a 'new' car. It's a very economical solution to my requirments for a daily driver. I think you exceeded the vehciles limited capabilities. The Rio barely fits 4 ppl; let alone 5 ppl. I tried to push my Subaru with my Rio when the Subaru was dead. Couldn't move the Subaru; just slipped the clutch in the Rio. Did I blame KIA? No.... I blamed myself for exceeding the capabilities of my vehicle; the clutch in it isn't rated to tow/push another vehicle. -
tallest tire to fit on 85/86 GL wagon?
MorganM replied to FirstSubaruGLwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
25"s will fit with minor attitude adjustments. 27"s will fit if you dont mind triming fenders and gently moving some metal with a big hamer. 29"s will fit if you drasticly cut fenders and move a lot of metal with your big hammer. -
I just got some info in the mail for this event. Guess they rememberd me from last year Really wish I could come this year! Going to shoot for next year as one of my 'must make' offroad events. Of all the places I've been offroading now Castana is one of the best! Nowhere have I seen 60+ miles of trails to explore out in the woods. Anyone who has the time and money to go should be there; you won't regret it nore will you forget it! Here's some pics from last year: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=616

Brake pedal sinks to the floor,
MorganM replied to Hank Roberts's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Glad they found it Hank. I was gonna mention that as a possibility but I figured they had already checked for that since its really easy to check! Guess I was wrong in my assumption :-p If you got the money have them replace all 4... bet the pedal feels even better! Don't belive what previouse owners say they'ev done unless you helped them do it -
aftermarket (summit racing) fuel pump issues
MorganM replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's two wires, a pump, and a relay Arch used the Ford fuel pump conversion for his ER27. Shoot him a PM about this; he should be able to tell you how he properly wired it up to the wire harness so the ECU controls the pump. It's not just wired hot off the battery or ignition circut. -
So in NJ you have to pass inspection to legaly register it to drive on the road? That would be my first and foremost concern. How much money and time is it going to cost to just pass inspection. 4WD conversion isnt really 'easy'. Its not very technical; but its A LOT of work. You'll need way more than the parts listed above. That's JUST for the 4WD Dual Range tranny. You'll also need the COMPLETE rear end.... the rear main subframe and everything that's attached to it. Rust will only compound the amount of time and labor to complete this conversion. The last 'free' Subaru I got proved to me that nothing in life is free

Ford fuel pump installed on an EA82T
MorganM replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This info is already posted. Used to be in the USRM but it's gone now. Had full conversion info. It's a Ford fuel pump and you can get the one used for the F150 EFI early '90s. The one where it had an intake and an inline pump. You want the inline pump. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26464&highlight=ford+fuel+pump http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12875&highlight=ford+fuel+pump -
and BOOM goes the radiator hose
MorganM replied to hooziewhatsit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Also note the hose from the water pump upto heater tube. Hoses from tubes to heater core and back. Small hoses behind the throttle body. And the ever evasive little hose down under the intake manifold from the block. Prolly hidden really well by you ppl who have power steering still Make sure your clamps are on tight! -
Please note this is one person's opinion. Plenty of ppl have been running larger than 27"s without ER27's or EJ20t's

Having those 4.11 gears would make low range not feel so wussed out. Did they just come out of the Legacy gearbox ? -

MorganM replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dealership gave me a KIA Sportage as a loaner while my Rio was getting some work done. I went down to this dirt parking lot that has a bunch of what look like mogels made out of dirt. Put it into 4Lo and locked the AT into 1st gear. I was impressed; had WAY more gear reduction than my Subaru! -
Helicoil isnt going to get the bolt out... Two great options mentinoed above: Heat and lube. I go with PB Blaster first. Hit it every few hours for a day whenever you can. Still a no go then it's time for heat and the hammer. It's a pretty small bolt so don't go wailing on it with the hammer.... I'd tap on the bolt as it cooled off. Then try to come back out with your socket driver.

Lifted Loyale--shifter pops out of gear

Lifted Loyale--shifter pops out of gear
MorganM replied to Tom63050's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just pull that plastic piece out, go drive around, and see if it still pops out of gear. The piece is really easy to remove. -
I'd look into why you are breaking so many shafts as opposed to finding a stronger one. I use junkyard Subaru shafts; seem to be fine for me. It is junkyard parts so ya it's a craps shoot. Look for the ones with the barcode tags still on them How are your tranny mounts? radius rod and other bushings? Have you double checked all your bolts after lift kit instal? Something might be loose or wornout cuasing too much slop in your drivetrain.

1990 Loyale STALLING!!! each time you slow down
MorganM replied to Haug1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Pull the wire harness plug off the TPS. Now you can see the 4 terminals. Notice how the manual labels them in relation to the position of the TPS on the Throttle Body. Throttle open/closed with the engine off. Same with the IAC; except it's only got 2 terminals. Again engine off. -

stock lockout hubs suck and I'm glad Subarus dont have them. -

I'm STILL over heating... dang.
MorganM replied to theDirtyRue's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Curiouser and curiouser... :-\ Are you loosing any coolant? Have all coolant hoses been replaced? (read: not just upper and lower radiator hoses) Are your clamps TIGHT? New radiator cap? I'm eluding to two things here. One being exhuast port coolant leak and its heating up yoru coolant there. Two being Subaru isnt holding proper pressure in the coolant system and its boiling over too soon. -
Sad to see it go due to emissions Just make the new one bigger and badder than the last!
