Never heard of using a rachet strap; do tell!

Cracked heads...
Yes I would suspect cracks somewhere else. Not between the valves like you noticed but rather deep in the exhuast port where they actually can crack into a water jacket. Cracks can be hard to see with the eye. I have heads pressure tested by a machine shop to see if they are realy cracked or not.

Disty advance/retard
The SPFI system can only compensate for so much added air mass. Just one little injector in the TB; I bet the MAF will read more air than the injector can even keep up with. I bet it screams with 8-10 PSI boost; does it need more? Nevermind... of course it needs more boost!

can a 93 soob have an EA82?
EJ18 is an EJ series; it's more like an EJ22 than an EA82. It's not like the EJ18 was a crappy engine and that's why they got rid of it; Subaru has always done small evelutions. EJ18 was just another link in the chain.

Anyone have the SPFI Conversion guide anywhere?
Email it to me; I'll post it on my website. morganm AT webprogrammers.net

Disty advance/retard
Nobody has the maps. Use the premapped system to your favor. As Northwet has said; you set the baste timing and ride the map to see how it works for you. Adjust base timing untill it behaves how you want it; optimized power but no predetination.

Disty gear swap
Looking at my dizzy there appears to be a pin in the shaft. Drive that out and see if you can pull the gear off.

Grandma bragging rights
That's great! Good to hear about hard working kids in today's world. You have every right to brag about him. He stands in strong contrast to a lot of today's silver spoon kids. What he has learned and done himself will go a long ways toward his future.

Things to bring on the trail
Good call; Yes! One jug of mixed antifreeze. Anywhere from one to 4 quarts of oil; depending on how far I'm driving. To go offroading for me it's not a little drive just outside of town. It's a minimum of 2+ hour drive to Little Falls, 4+ hours to Gilbert, or 6+ hours to Castana (all one way estimations). Yes I pack heavy but its for a full weekend of offroad madness.

Ok, this roo is really starting to get on my nerves...no start--fixed!....Broke again
Air, Fuel, Spark, Timing Timing Double check it... tripple check it... quadruple check it.... at the cams, at the dizzy, fire order from cap to plugs... it's one of the biggest PITAs on these engins.

Valves: Replace or just grind?
Just grind them down so they seat properly again and so the faces arent all pitted up. A machine shop will tell you if they are too far gone to grind them down. Or if you have a caliper and FSM specs you could check them all yourself.

Brat's engine and blowby problems...
That's some seriouse blow by man. Mine has it pretty bad but I dont use nearly that much oil. I'd say you have a broken ring or a valve guide went bad; something broke Run a compression test.

intake manifold tips
MorganM replied to Midwst's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBeen a while since I've pulled one on an EJ22...... Main wire harnesses unplug over by the battery. Fuel rail is seperate so injectors stay on the engine. TPS will stay with the intake mani. Same with IAC. Prolly have to unplug the stuff from charcoal canister. I'd say unbolt it, lift it slightly and see what you get hung up on. Move on from there. Just go slow and don't force anything. If something has to unhook to remove the intake manifold it will have a logical connector that you unplug.

Things learned
Just lift the one you have. I bet my wagon is way more rusty. You wont find a cheap one that isnt in rough shape; thats how it works.... expensive and good shape / cheap and rough shape. Do you really want to beat the piss out of one in good shape? I prefer pounding a rusty one on rocks and trees so I can smile real big instead of frown

Valve Cover Gasket Sealant question
The rubber seals are good enough for the first 25,000 miles Then they'll start sweat'n oil just like all EA82

The west is the best
Archemitis has a PILE of tires + wagon wheels he's trying to get rid of.

off road on the 1/4 mile
I'd give you $100 if you cracked that flywheel to the point it made the noise you describe. Check your U joints on the driveshaft.
