  1. needed new o2 sensor to pass emissions as car was running too rich...got the sensor, passed, ran great for a couple of months...then, like northwet said..had to slow down from 60 on highway---foot off accelerator, foot push clutch in, cel goes on, code 35 and 32...changed purge control solenoid and the code 35 went away...32 still there, light still on, even after changing out o2 sensor...pinging real bad...runs 100% better with maf unplugged...
  2. pcv valve is fine...havent checked the egr one though...check the wiring and connectors to the ecu..fine also....
  3. well, changed the maf again, went with the different style, went with a different air intake hose from tb to the filter, new t filter for the fix by subaru for smoking during long hard turns, still runs like crap....idles much much rougher with maf attached then not....checked all hoses again for leaks.... at this point i can either run w/o the maf attached and have a much better running car that doesnt get as good gas mileage and has the check engine light on because of the o2 sensor, or connect the maf back up, connect the green connector and have the cel go off and have a car that runs pissy, or, try and sell it and let someone else do the detective work... thoughts anyone??
  4. will be there saturday with ru(pinging or not) and my wife and homemade snacks to sell
  5. havent had the time to scope out each wire but have noticed that w/o the maf on the engine will not stay running when first started after a day or night off...if i keep the rpms at around 2-3k for about 30 seconds it will then idle fine but not otherwise...seems to show at least one of the maf wire connections was working anyway
  6. ed have to work on the 4th but will take you up on your offer hopefully sometime this week... thanx! alan
  7. watch out for a highrise console for an ea82 please use to shop those yards when i lived in aurora on a weekly basis...
  8. okey doke, update time....disconnected the maf yesterday...car runs better! smoother idle, quicker acceleration, no hesitation or bogging...cant tell on pinging till i go to work tomorrow at seatac and see if it pings at the normal areas of the hiway....but, so far so good...but, why is it running? i will be tracing the wiring as suggested to see if i can find the short i guess but i didnt think it would even run w/o it connected...maybe it defaults to rich?
  9. okey doke..will do that tomorrow after the town leaves for the holiday
  10. havent tried the maf yet other then putting on another one....i would guess the next part would be an injector...
  11. well, after moving up to lynnwood and doing the commute from there to seatac everyday i can positively say its still pings pretty well!! is it time to bring it in to smart-service and have them take a look? hate paying the shop charge, especially since i have no idea how long it might take them to find the problem, if they do find it at all... have to sell this before i can even begin to look at xt-6's and i refuse to sell this to someone before i get the pinging fixed...the squeaky brakes on the other hand is THEIR problem please help if ya can... thanx!
  12. any other ideas as i need to resolve the pinging issue before trying to sell it...
  13. ross will try out your idea this afternoon btwn trips for our moving day
  14. just to jump in here new fuel filter also...oem subaru....ngk standard plugs, correct heat range....changed the maf...no difference...havent run w/o the maf, just know it idled the same w/o it..... just seems strange that the car was running rich when i bought it, black tailpipe and o2 sensor...failed emissions...replaced o2 sensor...passed...going along fat dumb and happy and one day doing 60 had to dump the clutch and take foot off accelerator as traffic was coming to a stop and the cel came on with o2 sensor...pinging started soon thereafter and even was present when i disconnected the sensor...
  15. the when was around 25-30k ago, the where i dont know...the guy who i bought it from had bought it from someone else who had the paperwork...
  16. hmm, time to refresh everyone new plugs/plug wires/disty/rotor/cap/premium fuel by chevron/shell/texaco/timing right on at 20 degrees/carb cleaner sprayed around intake--no leaks/new temp sensor/new maf/pcv looks good/new o2 sensor comparing this to when i first got the car its a very strange story..wouldnt pass emissions---too rich!! tailpipe black...o2 sensor black..warren, the smog guru tweaked this and that, still wouldnt pass...new o2 sensor, passed...few months after...going down a hill doing about 60, saw traffic was coming to a halt, pushed in clutch and took foot off of accelerator, cel came on, o2 sensor....about a couple of weeks before that, car started to ping a bit, gas mileage went to around 37 mpg...any type of load and it pings, heck, going east on 90, take the exit for north 5 and there is a little incline, pinged in first and pinged after i shifted to 2nd.... anyone??
  17. well, changed the temp sensor and the maf and still no deal...pinging as bad as usual....NOW WHAT???? am running out of money and patience i have to admit
  18. so what is the procedure for doing this....brian at brians subaru did this a few months back but i dont remember what he did....positive? negative? both? for how long? etc...
  19. interesting stuff to report...replaced the temp sensor...that seemed to help the pinging a bit and now the temp gauge reads half way most of the time rather then 1/4 way before i changed it....hmmmm....also, found a maf and installed this evening and will see what happens tomorrow on the way to and from work... thanx for all the tips everyone...need to get this fixed for my commute and in case i sell it so i can get that deal on the two xt6's.....
  20. tell me about it...2.53 gal...use shell/chevron/texaco...still pings..hoping the temp sensor does it or a new maf
  21. swapped out temp sensor, will see what happens tomorrow..have already run seafoam in gas tank....will see if tacoma pap has the maf tomorrow...
  22. pinging occurs really all the time, but worse under load, going uphill...any gear...oil consumption is ok...cant tell if the pinging is all cylinders as my ears are what they used to be(darn rock'n'roll) was going to look for another maf and temp sensor tomorrow at the pap before worrying about another throttle body...
