  1. I have an 01 Forester with a 5sp. When I'm crusing at freeway speeds I get a noticable whine comming from the tranny when I let off on the gas a bit. It seems to only occur when I'm not on the gas and starting to lug. It's a high pitched whine comming from the general drive train area. Anyone else had this? Thanks, Glenn 82 Hatch,...transforming:temper: 01 Forester,...whining:boohoo:
  2. Look in the archives, there is a lot of discussion about what a chaser is and is not. Seems as though there is some disagreement on it. I agree with GD. Seems as though it's just a Canadian Hatch. Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming...:temper: 01 Forester, jealous....:madder:
  3. When you break in let me know, I would like the stereo. My stereo is a factory one:(
  4. I have an 82 Subaru Hatchback. I have been driving it since........82! that's 21 years and I love it! It has been a great car and if it weren't for rust holes on the belly pan I would continue to drive it daily. It is now going to become an off-road buggy for the family. Guess what we replaced the old Subaru with?.......another Subaru! without a question. We just purchased a used 01 Forester and I love it too! Maybe in another 20 years I'll buy another? For what it's worth, Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, jealous...:madder:
  5. I'll post pics soon. I'm planning on using 6 ply ATV tires they are typically rated at 650#. The folks down under have been making this work. The rims I'll be using will have to be custom manufactured. Stockton Rim out of Ca. will manufacture them for $90 each. Ouch! Or a company in Nebraska will sell me 12" blanks, no centers, for $23 to $28 depending on how wide I want them to be. I have some Trooper rims that I can take the centers out of and install these as the new centers on the 12's. Should keep my gearing the same:D Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming...:temper: 01 Forester, Jealous...:madder:
  6. According to the brochures, all GL's are D/R if manual. No D/R's were offered as a DL model. http://usmb.net/gallery/album76/1983_l The last line on the page is the dual range tranny and it is only under the GL models. Hope this helps, Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming...:temper: 01 Forester, Jealous... :madder:
  7. I beach lanch my Hobie all the time with my Hatch. Never been a problem. Just like everyone else, I use low range too. My hitch bolted to the cargo area too and I reinforced my bumper just for peace of mind. You shouldn't have any problems towing a small boat. For what it's worth, Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, Jealous...:boohoo:
  8. For anyone who cares......... After waiting 2 months for the plans to arrive:banghead: and letting work get in the way, the Rhino Buggy is taking shape:banana: The main space frame is assembled. The front strut assembly is done, and it is standing on it's own feet (up front anyway). My tape measure says 11" clearance down the center!!!! This is with the front springs LOWERED all the way DOWN!!!! and with my Stock All Season 13's!!!! (Can't wait to put my ATV tires on 26X12X12) The main space frame is just under 24" off the ground in the cab area. Can't give you any details on the back, because I haven't built it yet.........But the Diff is a Lincoln! Thanks for the input! My wheel base should be around 78" to 83" when I make some management decisions on length. (Four Seater Conversion) I'm going to lower the hood by 8" for visibility reasons. I'm also thinking on a Lexan firewall. I want to see whats in front as well as under my Sub! Should give me good feed back on what my wheels are up to. If all goes well it will be in Moab for an Inagural Hell's Revenge :madder: run in Mid October After writing all this now I wanna go home and work on it :boohoo: Think I may duck out early..... Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, jealous...
  9. This is a good explanation on what to do and how to do it. http://www.subarubrat.com/6lugconv.htm Good luck, Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper:
  10. My old Civic used to pull the inside rear wheel a foot off the ground in SCCA races. Felt stable and predictable. My Hatch is too slow to race.:boohoo: Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming...:temper:
  11. These guys do a nice job. http://www.users.bigpond.com/subaxtreme/index.htm I'd love to have one of these Before I'd go lifting a newer Sub, I'd see how well it climbs first. I looked at lifting my Forester but found out with the single range tranny it won't climb well enough to justify the $$$$. The Auzzies have D/R trannys in their Foresters:boohoo: I put on EBay fender flares and it now looks lifted! For what it's worth, Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming... :temper: 01 Forester, ain't gonna get lifted:(
  12. A sawzall just ahead of the strut towers on each side will get it out in less than 20 minutes! Use a 9" metal blade! Just rolls right out! I did it and kept the struts, motor, tranny, crossmember all as a unit. I even left the tires on! wished I'd have left it in neutral:banghead: I wouldn't try this w/o a cherry picker though:eek: This may or may not work for your application, but it sure worked well for mine.:-) Good luck Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming...:temper: 01 Forester, runs away when I get out the cherry picker....
  13. My 82 does the same thing when my distributor cap needs changing. For my car, it's magic!!! If you do the tune up, you may get by with out major surgery. I swear by a cap and wires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck, Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming....:temper: 01 Forester, drives like it needs a tune up whenever the AC is on!
  14. Miles, You mention you got good high end and good torque. I'm building a buggy and I want low end Torque. I have the y pipe and then 2" to a muffler. Would putting a cherry bomb like you suggest give better low end torque? Are cherry bombs forest service approved? I don't wanna be throwin sparks. Don't mean to steal your thread shanonsf but I was wondering the same thing. Glenn, 82 Hatch, transforming...:temper:
  15. Just kidding about the vin, if you had it we wouldn't be here! In the 1986 brochure section of the board here, it shows only the 4WD GL had a black bumper. If someone can see a chrome section on the front bumper it would not be 4wd! Still voting with everyone else...2wd! For what it's worth... Glenn, cars...
  16. What kind of food is under the seats? After you remove the french fries and candy check your front foot wells on the out side. I did this and found an 8" hole on each side:mad: makes a good foot rest though! Any holes on the belly pan will allow water to get in and give you that less than fresh feeling:slobber: I once lost a gallon of milk in my back seat, took a month before I could drive with the windows up:eek: Good luck, Glenn 82 Hatch, transforming.... 01 Forester, jealous
  17. Gimme a vin and I'll tell you! It must be a DL, that would explain the steel wheels and no roof rack. In 1983 they didn't make a DL with 4wd. 1981 and 1982 had a different grille. If it is a 4wd the rear suspension is toast! My money's on 2wd!
