nipper replied to raybo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNO. i wouldnt blame the tires either. Sounds like its a screwed up alignment. Roos don't eat tires unless something is wrong. nipper

Advice on Noisy Timing Belt Pulleys
nipper replied to dirkfabian's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere is nothing wrong with replacing just the beareings, as the hard parts themselves never go bad. Why there isnt a market for rebuilt TB pullies i dont know. I tired to figure out why the prices are so high for these things, and I couldnt. nipper

Have you ever had a tensioner go bad?
nipper replied to RallyKeith's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere is a HUGE problem with counterfit bolts on the market. When I was working in a QA department we ran into it a lot. Its unreasonable to do a 100% bolt inspection, so you take samples, and even then its the luck of the odds. Bolts shouldnt fail if they have happy little homes. I am surprised that he said they fail reglaurly, that would make me think that something else is wrong, just that it is beyond your control. (and i still have no idea what we are talking about... you just confused me more ) nipper

Have you ever had a tensioner go bad?
nipper replied to RallyKeith's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIve had one go bad on me, ever since then I replace them as part of the repair. Its one of those foolish gambles on an interfernce engine. 150.00 part that you replace once every 105,000 miles (do the math on penny per miles) or a very expensive engine repair. nipper

radiator fan
A stuck thermostat will not allow circulation of hot coolant to the radiator. Sometimes it affects the fans coming on and off, sometimes it doesnt. In general the cooling system shold be serviced every three years, so if it hasnt, now would be a good time. Don't forget a new radiator cap too. Glad the problem has been found.

Weird compression test numbers
nipper replied to X35 Performance's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXheheh ideally it should be a warm engine. Most the time a compression test is being done because the engine wont start. A warm engine is important to compare the results to the factory specs. Fort diagnostics (as it should be) its not necassary. I foten thought, gee the guy has a no start condition, what does he do, take the engine out and put it in his oven for an hour at 200 degrees? hehehe nipper

radiator fan
By 2/3 range it shold be on. Usually then fans come on about 1/2 on the temp gauge. Take a meter to the fan and make sure there is power before the motor and after the motor. Check the motors resistance. Ground out the lead to the thermo switch and see if the fan comes on. CHek your fluid level and make sure its full. Make sure the thermostat is functioning. nipper

"Check Engine" Light Came and Went
nipper replied to 211's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAutozone will read the codes for free. Ignore it. Dont worry about it. Notice how pretty the flowers are. If it's anything I would guuess a lazy O2 sensor, but in reality I wouldnt think twice about it. Probably just a hiccup, we all get indigestion every once in a while. nipper

1997 Legacy gt 2.5 rought idle
nipper replied to Joenasnj's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHave the codes pulled, and let us know what it says. Failing inspection can be that you went for inspection too soon after having the battery disconnected. It takes a specific number of cycles for the test to be valid. There are a few things it can be, but i really dont want to have you start throwing more parts at it without us first looking at the codes. nipper

All stickered up...
Except for the electric blue dash (my taste), thats really pretty. nipper

radiator fan
There is a thermo switch in the radiator that switches the fan on and off. The circuit is power to the fan, out to the thermo switch, then to ground. nipper

nipper replied to eryque's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDang i never even thought of that ewwww may beall the better reason to pul the blower motor. See what the squirrel cage looks like. Some rust is ok, heavy rust no. nipper

frozen cam?
It can just be somone screwed it up after doing a timing belt or a HG repair. Remove the timing belt and see if the engine turns freely. Inspect the cam bearings on the other side. If the other cam bearings are fine, I would repair it, BUT you would need to make sure all the oil galleys are clear. Thats the reason it went in the first place. Someone with more exp with this engine will tell you how. nipper

Fan won't blow
nipper replied to eryque's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOr it can be that You may want to pop off the blower motor and clean out the air box, Its unusual for them to get rusty. nipper

help please
Well .... There is the allied armament lift kit that will give you another 2 1/2 inches. This will give you better apraoch and departure angles. The Larger tires ill give you mnore ground clearance. If you go with larger tires, the rear wheelwell is going to need some trimming to allow for larger tires with the lift kit. New struts, as the KYB GR2 are wonderful. Skid plates. nipper

Fan won't blow
nipper replied to eryque's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXExcept that the fan will work only on high if the resistor is bad. High is fiull power. He has it compltly cutting out on him, so its not the resistor block. nipper

Weird compression test numbers
nipper replied to X35 Performance's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf this was my car, i would replace the belt, the idler and tensioner. Even if the belt is not that old, the belt can be damaged by jumping. There is no reason to risk a 5000.00 engine on a 60.00 belt. nipper
