1996 Legacy Outback Transmission or Front Diff Problems?
nipper replied to oakman1437's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWelcome Your going to need a used tranny. Also the problem your brother had was not the rear diff, its something called torque bind. Search that subject and youll see the rear diff is fine. nipper

Overheating
nipper replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDead flat is not the only issue. The surface finish also has to be a very tight tolerance. If the surface finish is not to spec, you will blow a head gasket. nipper

Overheating
nipper replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXLet me goto the dark side.... DId you have the heads machined when you replaced the head gaskets. Was the engine previously repeatedly over heated? nipper

Danger in driving w/no driveshaft on AWD car?
nipper replied to dave833's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhen you over heat the VC, the silicon fluid inside it bakes and becomes a glue. i have never seen anyone here say it becomes an open diff when the VC goes bad, but there is always a first time. nipper

Danger in driving w/no driveshaft on AWD car?
nipper replied to dave833's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt can always be the tranny, but hard to tell via the web. The whine is unusual. Whine is usually a hint of something more hidous wrong. If somone drives with Torque bind (without caring), it is very possible to damage the transmission. Dealers arent big fans of selling transmissions, so i would pay head to what they have to say. On the bright side, a used one is much cheaper. The whine can be the front diff, or an internal bearing or three. Driving with TB can beat up the bearings, which in turn can destroy the case. Its possible, rare but possible. What condition is the tranny lube and front diff lube in? nipper

Overheating
nipper replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi too vote for an air bubble. Start the car and let it idel with the cap off. When the t stat opens top off the cooling system. No car should ever be filled up cold, they all need to be filled up running. Drive around the block and check the level. nipper

Time For a Cookout!! June 30th is the Date
Er Um..... scary tow moment. On the PA turnpike going to NJ and my 87 throws a timing belt on a sunday of a three day weekend. Did the AAA gold dance to get the car home. The PA tow truck driver looked alot like this picture, and said to me "your too pretty to be left out here alone" i was so happy he was just getting my car removed from the turnpike so AAA could rescue me. nipper

How many miles once the gas light comes on?
nipper replied to 211's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe feed me light can come on and off with the angle of the car. Its when it stays on that you need to pay attention to it. Mine flickers on and off about E (which is normal for any light) as the fule sloshes around, and as the jet pump (in AWD subarus) moves fuel around. It could be you may be due for a fuel filter, and thats affecting the jet pump effeciency. nipper

How much clearance you have?
Blu has 7.3 Inches acording to the cars101.com chart. a 4" lift kit is in the mail, which increases it by 2" (replaces the factory 2" lift). Blu will have 9.3 inches of clearance soon. Way cool. nipper

Getting better gas mileage
There is another thing to look at.... With a hybrid you will be giving less money to people that hate us, and (hopefully) get our sons/daughters/Fathers/mothers/bothers/sisters out of harms way sooner. nipper

Replacing the power steering oil
nipper replied to rverdoold's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBe careful about those hex plugs. They may have check balls behind them. Another method, neater but a little more painstaking, is using a large syrange. Suck out the resivoir, refill, start the car, turn wheel left then right, and repeat 5 times. nipper

Getting better gas mileage
That is a reasonable thing to do. And it does add to the gas mileage signifcantly. nipper

How many miles once the gas light comes on?
nipper replied to 211's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEngine stalls, the car just rolls. The tranny pump looses pressure so it is like being in neutral. 24 mpg is not bad. It takes at least 3 tanks of gas to determine baseline MPG. i get 20/24 in my 2.5L OBW auto. i can see 29mpg if i stick to 60, but thats no fun. Also do 60 here and you back up traffic. nipper nipper
