Tire cables/Chains: Who uses 'em?
nipper replied to Martinjmpr's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXon a 4wd/awd car, unles you are in the extreems where you get snow all year (think ant artica) a good set of snow tires on all 4 wheels and sane driving will be just as good. Chains are important if you need traction for going up an incline, or ice packed roads. If you are in that kind of territory your better off with studed snowtires. Also another thing to consider is ground clearance. If the snow is deep enough, and you get one tire front and rear to loose traction, you really arent going anywhere. Trucks use chains since time is money, and they have a lot of tonage to try to control, and only a few drive wheels that are relativly close together. They try to load the trucks as far forward as possible, but once you loose drive traction, your not moving. Strap chains are better for emergencies then full chains, Full chains better if you can anticipate the need. I've never had any type of traction aid last more then a few storms. nipper

'03 Legacy GT sedan using coolant??
nipper replied to shortlid's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXQuite a lot actually. The will replace both headgaskets (at least the dealer where i got my engine rebuilt was doing both). That means strippping down the engine to the block. Its funny how small the engine is once they get it that far stripped. nipper

Totally SCREWED by AAMCO...
nipper replied to Kilroy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSince we are telling horror stories ... My sister Had (she sold it last august) a 3yo BMW. In those three years it had 4 transmissions. Seems that it liked to put itself in drive and reverse at the same time. The last time it happened they tried to blame her for the failure. What threw me off tranny shops, many years ago in a far off land i had a 1973 Suoer beatle with a semi automatic. The clutch actually went bad (it had a torque converter and a vacum operated clutch). They had the car for 3 weeks, and i never did get it back. They gave me the run around about parts, etc. One night a car ran a red light in front of a gasoline tanker. Neeldess to say a huge boom and fire ensued, and the tranny shop was at that intersetion. the car and the shop was melted. Just to show this is not a new scam... My faimily had a 1964 amc rambler wagon. This had to be the late 60's early 70's. The car had a torque tube, which was a tube that covered the driveshaft and mounted the rear axle to the transmission. One of the universal joints in the driveshaft went. the car had to go to a transmission shop. They had the car for 3 weeks. We almost lost the car, as my father went to the shop to find out the shop was for sale (this was before consumer laws). What should have been an all day repair was still not done in three weeks. All i know 2 days later the car was home repaired. I did not ask dad what he did (I was 8 i think). That was an AAMCO. The biggest reason for years that i would not by an automtaic car was because of tranny shops and thier scams. Automatics have gotten so much more betterbut the scams have yet to change. If my tranny was to go i would get a used one, as i dont trust tranny shops. nipper

95 legacy l abs brake question
nipper replied to 86subaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXABS does not make a low pedal. If you can pump the brakes and get a higher pedal you have air in the system, or contaminated brake fluid. Either way you are looking at bleeding and flushing. Also you can check the Booster by pumping the pedal with engine off several times. Start the car with your foot on the brake. The peadl should move towards the floor. ANother possability is that the flexable brakelines are failing internally and need to be replaced. nipper

Sluggish when cold, Injectors?
nipper replied to andyhessler's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXInjectors are the last thing to suspect. It's akin to wanting a heart transplant cause you have a cold. When was the last time this car had a tuneup, filters changed, and an o2 sensor change? nipper

timing belt question
nipper replied to 86subaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell the fan switch is indirectly lit. It steals some light off the other bulbs. You may have a bulb out (or not). Its not the best illumination ive seen. Do a search on climate control lights and it wil tell you how. merry christmas nipper

I Cant Get The Damn Wheel Off> Help Fast!
Keep hitting it as you rotate the wheel. Once you do get it off, apply a film of oil to yhr threads and the lip of the drum and wheel, that way it wont happen again. You have plenty of time.... yea.... plenty *giggle* mine was done two weeks ago:banana: nipper

103K & leaking green
nipper replied to Megalomando's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've found out in my professional life that being polite, reasonable, and letting the other party know that you know exactly what is ogin on (and your options) really helps. There comes a time to play hard ball, and a time to be kind. Every time i started off with kind (but firm) i usually got the answers i wanted. nipper

Loyale in need of help!
On the 60K cycle everything should be changed every other timing belt just to avoid doing it again. If you are doing it yourself and want to play the odds, thats fine, but usually they start leaking at the most inoportune time. nipper

Loyale in need of help!
Its necassary because of murphies law. Its only a little extra money and a little extra labor while you are in there, as opposed to alot of labor and little money when they start to leak later. You are right there so replace them, its preventative maint. nipper

PCI timing belt kit off of eBay...Any Good?
If this was for 106K i would strongly suggest an OE timing belt, but for 60K (and only 60K) it should be ok. Google the mfg and see what comes up. The only disturbing thing is its attraction to telephone poles nipper
