  1. Well its got lots of motvng parts, and is not a 60,000 $ car. Noise vibration and harshness is so much more then insulation under the hood. Its a matter of motor mounts negineering and alot of testing. Just turn the stero up or get used to it nipper
  2. hrmmmm a bolt needs to come loose via vibrattion. Vibration can come from a failed bearing. A failed would come from a failed seal maybe? Since its pressurized oil that goes to the turbo, i cant see how low oil would cause it to fail. Also if the bearing failed, it would take the oil seal with it, whic would cause a loss of oil. Stand your ground. Failed turbos dont happen often but i hear about 6 a year. nipper
  3. Personally i would never buy a salvage car. You really dont know whatwas wrong with the car. Run a car fax and make sure it came from from where they say it did. Call your insurance company and ask them what they value it at. Never pay more for a car then what it is worth. Personally i would take the money and by a slightly older non salvage car, be far less headaches in the long run. nippe
  4. your forgetting one other thing...... heat. Hood insulation may hold the heat in, and thats not a good thing. Look for the sources of your noise, like valves that need adjustment, worn belt tensioner etc etc first nipper
  5. damage may be done. remove the belt makes sure it goes away. Take a can of wd 40 and spray the alt shaft, wee if it cheanges pitch. Same for the PS and AC compressor and the belt tensioner. Could be the (drive) belt tensioner going bad. nipper
  6. its not that simple. Cars wyould run far richer then they do today, so its not an issue. As pollution controls were added, the engines strated running leaner. Right now they run so lean that some pinging will happen and is considered acceptable ubder some circumstances. If you had an older car that ppinged you turned the distrubutor to get rid of it. Now the puter does all that stuff.... and melted pistons bad.... nipper
  7. oh would you EVER notice knock, its affects performance, then there is that entire melting of the piston thing nipper
  8. of course you can always get a new knock sesnor, but hey what fun is that:rolleyes:. Keep in mind now if you ever do develop heavy ping or knock, there is nothing your ecu can do to stop engine damage. nipper
  9. except the computer does not monitor the pressure in the ac system. The AC will cut out under full throttle. nipper
  10. I should have explained myself better oh well... THis is how a knock sensor works. http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h38.pdf#search=%22what%20is%20a%20knock%20sensor%20%22
  11. there is no humidity out there, its desert. Check the pressure in the ac system first befor you do anything else. It sounds like you may just be low on refrigerant. nipper
  12. The knock sensor doesnt need a ground. Its a peizo electric quartz sensor that creates an ac voltage that is sent through the ECU. When you put a meter to it and check to see if there is a circuit to gound, there should be none, if there is its a failed sensor. The AC signiture varies with the amount of knock. That said the ecu seeing no signal from the sensor, you will most likely get an CEL, and also possibly damage your engine. Not all sensors work off of resistance. DONT use a resistor, as it has no resistance. Even the haynes manual describes quite well how these things work. DO NOT GROUND A SENSOR WIRE OR PUT A RESISTOR IN ONE unless you are 100% sure as to how the thing works. You can damage an ECU this way. The knock sesnor hears knock before you do and corrects for it. Ping it cant do anything about because of the way ping happnes. Pinging may lead to knock, but ping by itself is realtivly harmless if annoying. If you want to argyue this point go right ahead as after umpteen posts on ping im not going to defend it, just do a search on it here. nipper
  13. all power goes through the master switch. Thats why you can lock out all the other windows. Your going to have to check and see if there is power to the rear switch from the front master switch. Also check the motor for any opens. The switches can be taken apart and cleaned if your careful. nipper
  14. From NYS traffic saftey council http://www.nysgtsc.state.ny.us/seat-tip.htm http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/airbags/airbags03/page7.html DOT says 80 pounds nipper
  15. Lets hold judgement till the diagnoses comes back. Make enough of anything you will get a few bad products, its statistcally bound to happen Let us know what they say nipper
  16. yes what he said how many miles. COUld be an overtightened belt, a dying altenator. Remove the belt and see if it goes away. nipper
  17. *eyeroll* Its so you dont get rear ended in a fog bank. Lights serve two purposes, to see and be seen. Thats why its important ALL the lights work on the car. Thats what parking lights are for. Drive behind a Jag sometime with the fog lights on, its really bright. When i lived in SLC out towards the gold mind there nasty pile ups because people counldnt see the car in front of them through the fog. On the bike i would do hotels freinds or camp. In the car with my problem back hotels . i prefer mom and pop hotels, no phone 2 tv channles, a pot belly sotve, but GREAT beds, and a home cooked meal. nipper
  18. The AT light flashes for a fault on the previous opertational cycle. you mau have to start the car twice to see if it goes away nipper
  19. ive done ti 4 times by car and 6 times by motorcycle. With a cell phone, and AAA card no reason to fear. A well maintained car helps too. Ol blu has 187,000 mile son her, and i have no worries. Ive done this as late as november by car, and snow in wyoming falls sooner then that Rear fog light is mandated in europe by law. nipper
  20. er um is that 750 in park or drive? 500 rpm sounds awfully low to be ideling in park. nipper
  21. general plan is western South dakota, i love the black hills and havent gotten chased by buffalo in a while, then wyoming to visit a freind and wonder wround there. Then ill go to Galcier (or is it ice cube) national monument, head to seattle and portland, down to San francsico, and head on back. nipper
  22. i'm looking for them too. The horn in the outback is wussy, and i only have one. Ive had too many close calls where they ignore me, or just dont care. i want to scar the crap out of them.... literally nipper
