  1. throw in the FWD fuse and i bet it goes away. AT such a low mileage i bet a tranny flush will fix it right up. Of course we are assuming al the tires match, same inflation, as this can cause the same thing. nipper
  2. Check you camshaft position sensor and or crank sensor if you got em. Thats where the puter would get its timing input from. Do you also have spark? If you dont thats why. nipper
  3. Sounds like your engine needs to be resealed .... Cranksahft seal cam seals, adn as long as your there replace the timing belt and oil pump. nipper
  4. additives always go right on the raditor. AT this point ill defer to somone else, as there is a procedure for burping the cooling system which i havent done yet on a 2.5. The 2.2 i never had a problem I would flush the system with a garden hose while the car is running, im seeing 6.3qts on the 2.5L engine. Thenik would fill it with the anitfreeze and deminerilized water. nipper
  5. only one way to find out .. grab a gas can and take a drive nipper
  6. If its an auto, get a transmission flush, if you are lucky it will clear it up. I did that and it solved it on mine at 180 K miles. Just after you get it doen drive in circles in a parking lot about 5 times .. and then it should go away. My last sooby was a 98 legacy. then it got crunched (if could figure out how to post pics i would). The more i drive the 97 OB the mnore i am in love. Its taller, seems to handle better, has more power, and i love the heated and height adjustable seat. The gas mileage is worse, but since i cant drive far i dont care (especially now that gas is almost reasonable). nipper
  7. sounds like the 4 way flasher thingy died. (yes i know thingy is geek term). Rear defogger relay in on the drivers behind the dashboard. There will be three relays, rear defog, tail lights and main fan relay, and what looks like 5 electircal connectors on the same block. Turn signal and hazard unit looks like iits on the left side of the passenger sidenext to the glovebox. Its the middle relay of three, top one is the seat belt timer, lower is the illumination control. nipper
  8. do you have normal turn signals ? when you turn on the flashers do they work? With the 4 ways on they should over ride the turn signals. 4 ways have a higher priority then turn signals (in most cars). nipper
  9. in my 97 if it gets cold enough the defroster duct squeeks .............. grrrrrrrrrrrr nipper
  10. I have a 97 OBW auto 182 K minor oil leak someplace original head gaskets and it purrs right along.MAintained like clockwork by previous owner. Of course you ALL know if they blow this morning onr of you is coming over to change them nipper
  11. Regular antifreeze changes using SUbaru antifreeze and demineralized water. Also use the subaru additive. That will help, plus some luck. nipper
  12. Inspect the front brake lines, as they may be internaly collapsed causing a higher pressure then normal. Actually just go ahead and replace them anyway, if they are OE. Check to see if you have check valves in the master cylinder. If you do remove them. It sounds as if there is residual pressure stuck in the system, which normally is not a problem for drums, but is for discs. The hill holder only works on one wheel, so i sort of agree that it was not adjusted right in the other case. nipper
  13. Doesnt happen often, a cracked piston skirt, but yes, thats it nipper
  14. well i want my SVX once my back is all fixed, then would LOVE to make my outback into a mustang eating sleeper nipper
  15. Have your breaks checked. The ABS is an acummulator that releases a very minor amount of brake fluid, then when you stop breaking, it is released back to the master cylinder. I am not quite sure if its solenoids or a motor that does it, but furst rule out the cheap stuff like your brakes. nipper
  16. i think its a dealer item. May be easier to get a tranny and swap it out. i got estimates for my 97 OBW of 1000.00 to r and r the unit. Have you tried a tranny flush, or are you sure its shot? nipper
  17. Physically inspect the sensor. The only test mentiones is to do a resistance test from the terminal to ground, it should be an open circuit. The esor has a small peice of quartz in it tha generates a AC signal, the stronger the signal the siganl the higher the knock. It may just pay to replace the sensor. nipper
  18. You need to get an aftermarket oil pressure gauge on the car to see what is happening. The oil pressure switches do go bad. Check the oil and make sure its not thinned out by gasoline or water. You dont say how many miles are on the car (grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) But what does the most to regulate oil pressure is the main bearings. If the oil pump is orignal i would replace it, as thats the easiest and cheapest thing to do first, aside from switching to a thicker oil. After you put on a gauge, confirm the low pressure is real, replace the pump, and keep your fingers crossed. Yuo can inspect the pump for wear, but generally when i decide that things are at that point, i just replace the pump. nipper
  19. It sounds like the damage has been done. Usually the Duty c solenoid failing will throw a code on the tranny light (i think). The only suggestion i can make, is first check the tranny fluid, see if it is burnt. You may want to try a tranny flush if there if the previous test for power is ok. Can you describe the clunking better? and can you explain why the car wont move? Exaclty what are you doing and what is the car doing. A freid AWD unit should not make it impossible to move the car, unelss the tranny itslef is fried. which is possible. nipper
  20. do you still have a cat on this thing? Could be the cat is partially clogged nipper
  21. do a search on piston slap ..lots and lots of topics, but the older engines don't do. The newer generation of engines do it. Pistons used to have skirts on them. In order to kake the engines heat up faster for emissions, rev a bit quicker, piston skirts have been done away with in newer engines. Piston slap is a rattling under the hood when the car first starts up, and goes away as the engine wwarms up and the pistons expand. A lot of engines suffer from this, and most subaru engines run well over 200-300 miles with this condition, It is basically harless but annoying. I think its an issue after 91. nipper
