  1. IMO, 10 months isnt that long. I think you'd be good to go. My car's never ran right, always had SOMETHING wrong with it, the cooling system is NOT up to par whatsoever, and I still drove it on a 6 hour drive, and also a 6 hour drive back about a week later, no problems at all, didnt have to stop throughout the whole round trip. I feel more confident in my old Subaru than in any other car I've owned for long trips, including three that were less than a few years old.
  2. Yeah, I dont care either if he stays or not... it DOES keep the forum interesting
  3. At least it aint your cheapy ignition switch when you're in the fast lane on the freeway in traffic doing 55 The lighted fan switches broke on me too, but I perfected the pull, and roll wires together routine though
  4. Wow, I didnt know that! You learn something new every day...
  5. Would it be possible to wire a light to the ECU (the original code-reading light) and maybe stick said wire and light in an empty slot at the idiot light area? Then you wouldnt have to STOP and look under the dash for codes... just look right there, and there it is Think its doable with a little soldering iron, a small bulb, and some thin-gauge wire?
  6. You'll do fine, these engines are SO easy to swap... Hope the hand gets better though!
  7. Last Subaru I had, I put the Walmart gauges in it... has 3 gauges, a voltage gauge, a temperature gauge, and an oil pressure gauge. Did what it was supposed to at least... better to get stronger lines though, so I hear. It's easy to get a light for aux fan and fogs, maybe you can wire a light into the switch? I personally used to use those little Autozone lighted switches, but im SURE theres better than that... maybe?
  8. Use an OEM thermostat. Thats what everyone says anyway, I havent changed mine personally.
  9. yeah, my speedometer sticks at times... i guess if its not THAT serious, i'll worry about it whenever i have the dash out...
  10. Yes, you check timing on the flywheel. I failed CA smog because of the fact the technician did NOT know how to check my timing... yeah, lame i dont have pix handy, but i'll tell ya how to do it. Take out your spare tire first... Look down in the middle of the bellhousing, by where the trans and engine meet, sorta close to it there should either be a hole with the flywheel right there, and a notch showing you where the timing should line up. theres numbers on the flywheel, so just line up the number with that little notch if you dont see it, there MAY be a rubber cover on it, a black one... lift it off, and then there it is. the usual, hook up the light to #1 cylinder (passenger side front) hook up light to battery, and point 'er at the flywheel. turn the disty, im sure you know how to do it... timing's simple on these cars
  11. check everything you can with a meter... idle air control valve (take it off and clean it out, preventive maintenance) coolant temperature sensor (check the connector, clean it up good) throttle position sensor (check the connector, and clean it too) mass air flow sensor (you checked it though, did you clean it too?) then go ahead and make sure you dont have a vacuum leak... spray carb cleaner around the vacuum hoses... if idle goes jumpy, you found a leak check for codes from the ECU run a D-Check if you can keep the car running last but not least... get the pinouts from the FSM... and start checking for continuity on the wires from the ECU plug to the assorted sensors
  12. what would cause the ECS light to come on, accelerating from a stop, then turn OFF once i slowed down? the 600 mile trip i took mustve cleared out the crusties and back to putting in new parts oh yeah, and a creaking back end is the shocks right? i dont THINK wheel bearings make creaking noises btw, car's an '86 spfi 3AT coupe. codes came out of all checks combined: VSS, TPS, CAS.... argh but i've always had these codes TPS checked out like it did when i reinstalled it, just fine, idle switch in it is OK VSS... god knows what that is.. i KNOW what it stands for, but i dont know what it IS CAS... i DID clean out the disty... may have to give that another shot maybe?
  13. Doesnt seem too bad... How much would it cost to do the swap, with a new clutch and everything?
  14. I have a 2WD, 3AT '86 GL 3-door. EA82. I want a manual transmission, as I'm losing gear oil with no clue where it's going, and I just hate the 3AT regardless. I'd LOVE to get more than 25 MPG I searched, and didnt exactly find anything on 2wd to 2wd swaps... I dont think I'd have to swap axles... But... I'm asking what I'll need, because I'd have to get it done within 2 days, and I dont want to have any "duh" or "d'oh" moments
  15. In California you get no slack due to anything. I dont do above 65. Why? Stupid slushbox...
  16. Rows of fins ARE missing from my radiator Thats why I didnt even bother to flush it, it's falling apart anyway, why waste money and time on a bad radiator, I assume... If it were'nt for my patience (doing 55-60) having the heater on full blast at all times, and watching the temp gauge like a hawk, it would have STILL overheated, and I didnt lose any coolant going either way.
  17. Had to come back... Darn it. Car made it again, without a hitch. Go Subaru!
  18. I did make it! 300 miles straight, no stopping, no overheating, blasting the heater the whole way. Oh yeah, not to mention I did 55-60, drafting big rigs all the way there. Actually, followed only ONE truck the whole way here! I bought a new radiator cap, i think it DID help... and also bought some Water Wetter. Stayed a tad above halfway on the temp gauge, even on the grades. Then once I got here... I checked fluids... my gear oil (the stinky ish) was EMPTY... and it may have been that way the whole trip... Crap, I knew I forgot SOMETHING when I checked stuff before I left :-\ But it's topped off now, at least. In other news, I've officially got over 350 miles out of one tank... finally! 362 miles on the odo, and a bit more gas to go! Thanks all for the support! (BTW Connie how much ya want for the radiator? PM me if you can, thanx!)
  19. You have to find out what kind of motor it is first... Definately an EA82, but the "flavor", so to speak. No clue on the interchangability of heads, though.
  20. What's going to suck is going slower than normal on I-15... all those crazy Vegas drivers going 100-130 in their new cars blowing me out of the water, while I'm all staring at my temp gauge going 55... Steady and smooth
  21. So... tomorrow morning, I'm leaving on this trip. I'm still pretty scared, to be honest. If it gets hot, I'll pull over... Thats all I can really do. I've got Prestone "super flush" stuff... is this stuff any good? I dont want to waste a buttload of time if all it's going to do is... well... waste my time :-\ I may bite the bullet and buy Watter Wetter also... And yes, my electric fan is always on, and so is the belt driven one If (See? I'm saying "if") I make it to Arizona... when I get the money, the radiator will be REPLACED... it's bad enough that I have to be rushed and drive it on a bad radiator right now... getting me all paranoid and stuff By the way, I have a 3AT tranny... Downshifting it wont kill it will it?
  22. I've heard of that egg thing... and the black pepper also... I'd much rather do either one of those than that Stop Leak stuff.. eww :-\
  23. I havent seen a single Brat out here... :-\ Maybe I just dont get out enough...
  24. Agreed... I get 5-7 MPG just by not jackrabbiting it... and I try to keep it at or under 65... Then again I have the @#!!$% 3AT and that alone is bad MPG...
