  1. Not trying to hijack this post but I am currently trying to find out why my 2000 Legacy GT pings (has from day 1) if I use the recommended 89 octane. Any thoughts?? My post is 89 octane "ping" but I will check back here for your collective wisdom.
  2. Is the engine on the 2000 Legacy GT a 2.5? There is a current post which indicates running 91 octane. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18461 I took the car to the local Sub dealer today for "free" oil change today and in response to the ping question, they suggested a tune up first and then they would consider sending gas samples to SOA?? I would have to leave the car foir about 5 hrs.?? The car has 64K miles on the original plugs but they look OK. Anyway, as I stated originally, this condition was present when the car was brandy new. Is there a way of resetting the timing on the computer?
  3. Be that as it may... the carbon buildup issue... but I had this problem with the first tank of gas into the car as it rolled off the delivery truck. As I said, I just resigned myself to the higher octane gas until prices hit the ceiling. Anyone out there running 89 octane without problems in the 2000 Legacy GT? What's a boy to do??
  4. Ever since new, my 2000 Legacy GT has pinged if I use the 89 octane recommended by the SOA. So I just got into the habit of pouring from the top shelf i.e. 91 octane. Now that gas prices have gone through the roof, I again tried 89... ping. The dealer didn't really suggest a fix back when I first got the car. It's amazing that my 90 Loyale will run on practically piss but the 2000 has gone soft. Is there an adjustment to the timing to allow me to use the lower octane?
  5. So many possibilities, cv, rotors, calipers, rattling heat shields, all the while trying to outrun the rust... but there's good rubber on the road thanks to you. Drive safe and mind those bugs up north.
  6. 90 Loyale. At first I thought I was dealing with some front suspension gremlin but now it seems brake related. Occasionally I get this horrible groaning/ginding noise on slow braking. It may be more obvious when turning at the same time. I can feel it right through the steering. The brake pads are new. I didn't resurface the rotor. Is it possible that the piston from the caliper is getting hung up and causing these symptoms?
  7. 90 Loyale makes a horrible groaning sound when hard turning right at dead slow speed. I can feel it in the steering. I checked ps fluid level. Is there some bushing or whatnot that could be the culprit. How to diagnose?
  8. I seem to keep adding power steering fluid. Where does it go?? I don't seem to have any major external leak? Is there any problem with filling beond "capacity"?
  9. Last time I had symptoms, I too thought the fluid "looked fine" but in reality, the fluid level was low! I'm not sure how the reservoir is set up but it took a fair amount of Dextron to top it off. Symptoms gone.
  10. Unless you are going to paint your entire car, I've been told that pro paint shops have a sampling "gun" that works similar to how Home Depot/Lowes matches paint color. This will take into account matching old faded paint. P.S. Rustoleum white works great on my 90 Loyale. I use it on a monthly basis to touch up rust spots kinda like acne coverup cream.
  11. I need new tires for my 90 Loyale 4WD wagon. I've gotten differing recommendations for size. The placard on the drivers column says 165/13 when talking about load. I currently have 165/80/13 on the car. TireRack recommends 185/70/13. Other on-line stores say 175/70/13. What gives?

  13. There is unfortunately a "knock" coming from the lower engine! I wish it was just a misinformed sensor! Hep me pleeeze.
  14. I've got a 97 Outback with 168,000 miles. HG repaired at 110,000. Now I'm getting a CEL that local mechanic states is a knock sensor? from the lower engine. The light comes on and goes off without much rhyme or reason. Is this something that will kill the engine sooner than later? Is there anything that can be done other than a rebuild or replace?? Thanks
  15. Does this engine also have the little boots (washers) around the valve cover bolts? That's where mine leaked and the oil just made it's way down. Feel around the bolts to try to determine actual source of leaks. The suggestion to clean the engine first and then do some diagnosis before opening her up is a good tip.
  16. I'd take Subau of America up on their kind offer of 3yr/36,000 warranty. Let them figure it out or at the very least, create a record on file. Good luck.
  17. http://home.comcast.net/~c.moe/pvc_mod.pdf This will take you to a FSB about this very problem of smoking on hard right turns. I too freaked the first time I experienced it and started dreaming about my next car. Anyway, I never did the recommended fix but did replace the PCV valve (courtesy of Moosens - thank you) and haven't noticed the problem since. I hope the ticking is as simple a problem to solve.
  18. Cookie is right. Search and ye shall find. Indeed as I recall the post, there is an upgraded (larger) rotor and brake assembly on later models that accomodates the increase in weight. See if the dealer or SOA would cut you a deal to upgrade now since you'll have to be paying the price every 25K miles yourself otherwise.
  19. Yup, my tranny (00 Legacy GT 36K) was replaced under warranty. It was slow going from R to D and attributed to some sort of solenoid as I recall and the dealer even gave me a loaner while they swapped out the tranny.
  20. I am no "rocket surgeon" when it comes to ABS but are the brake pads and fluid within normal limits? I think my brake light (ABS?) came on when the pads wore to the point of creating very low brake fluid in the reservoir. Brian, welcome to the site where the mutterings of genius and madmen are posted side by side. Regards, The Mad Hatter
  21. When did it start to run "crappy"? My 90 Loyale went belly up after I hosed off the engine. Spark plug wires or connections? Try using the old wires or verify good contact. Residual water in distributor cap or coil plug insert? Dry out inside of distributor cap... if you've got one on the Leg 91. Common things happen commonly! If you hear something clip clopping down the road, chances are that is a horse and not a zebra (exception for those USMB members from Africa).
