  1. If you are handy with a soldering iron: Or if you want someone else to do the repair: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Subaru-Legacy-Outback-map-light-overhead-console-REPAIR-for-air-bag-code-26-/142319374843
  2. I had an issue with my airbag light on 05 OB. Been a while so I cant recall if it was on dash or overhead console by map lights. It may have been intermittent?? If you have the same config, apparently there was a bad solder joint in the overhead console. I discovered this bit of information after buying a replacement.
  3. As I said, I do not have an air gun. My question is whether in trying to remove the lug nut with an air gun and torque set very high that the technician, unaware that he had the gun set to forward, jammed the nut on and mangled the nut/bolt threads.
  4. But since I had NO sense that the nut was cross threaded when I last replaced it BY HAND, isn't it more likely that the tech had his air gun set to a very high torque and unaware that he had it set to forward, laid into the nut while trying to remove it? OR would stripping/mangling the nut/post under those circumstances even be a possibility?
  5. they were all ok as far as I know when I went there. This "occurrence" was noticed at the start of the procedure. "Hey, look what I found"
  6. opinions wanted: So the history is that I took the car to Walmart for 4 new tires. Went cheapo since the car is at 190K miles and has a bunch of other issues that I might not want to deal with. They take the car in and within minutes report to me that the stud is stripped. Well, for nearly 40 years I have been doing my own brakes and since I don't have air tools have always just used anti seize and hand tools. i have been known to make mistakes (never admitted this to my wife) but I would have thought I would have felt if the threads were crossing... Question is whether the young mouth breather tech had the gun air pressure cranked up and didn't realize he had it on forward as he tried to remove the nut... Would this cause the damage?? The stud is chewed nearest the hub and not so much at the tip. The nut's threads are all kinds of gerfucked!
  7. nice write-up on this type of bearing Notable that there are too few grease nipples on newer cars seems like in olden days even the radio had a grease nipple
  8. Thread crossed and destroyed. Need to replace stud and lug nut. Need to remove hub?
  9. I am local to Norwalk. I may need a knuckle. Where did you get the knuckle? I don't need a friend like yours I am capable of kicking myself when down.
  10. Mine was done by a Subie tech and they did not remove the engine. The 15-17 range seems reasonable. As mentioned your vintage leaks oil. As long as you watch your fluids, you might want to wait for the timing belt change interval (105K miles) as they will be halfway into the engine at that point.
  11. The 08 typically has an external HG leak. I waited for my timing belt service interval (105K miles) and had the hgs replaced at that time. They were leaking but not horrendous yet. Keep an eye on your fluids while you search. I learned my lesson after my 05 started leaking just AFTER the TB was changed. At 186K miles, it is leaking oil so badly that I could lease it out to reseal driveways. Sorry, I don't have any recommendations for a local mechanic.I'm sure some neighbors will chime in. There are way too many posts regarding HG issues to mention. Use the search function and check the various forums including the repair manual. I know there are variety of youtube videos on HG replacements. A quick search of the Repair Manual forum on this site doesn't highlight HGs. I may have missed it under "engine" but perhaps your observation is valid in this regard. The USMB is a wealth of information and friendly members. I am mostly an armchair mechanic but a frequent flyer (and beggar of information) on the site. Just yesterday, a top poster described the year that Subaru of America modified their choice of HG material. Based on site recommendations, I opted for the turbo HG when having my 08 done. It seems that subsequently, SOA also changed their HG material to reflect this choice.
  12. 08 OB auto wheel bearing at 95k changed leaking HG at timing interval 105K miles an occasional p0420
  13. Closest yard has one with 80K (?) miles on it at least that's what the junkyard dog barked at the salesman ;-) They want $250 for it but the salesman said it has a little "catch" in the rotation "all Subarus do" hmmmm. Its also an hours drive each way. RockAuto is lately getting some horrible reviews i.e. NO LONGER HAVE ANY LIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Yikes!! Probably go for the cheapo from Parts Geeks and give it a go.
  14. 05 Outback Auto 4cyl 189K miles Rumbling has gotten real bad when driving and rapping mid car when taking off. Seems like the center bearing on this non-serviceable drive shaft is shot. (Diagnosed by Subie tech while in for my free oil change) Parts Geeks has a remanufactured shaft by A1Cardone for $260 or Rock Auto has new Dorman for $360. Any thoughts?
  15. yup cny that silverado ujoint sounds about right anyone every tap in a grease fitting for that center bearing i have been told by local shops that the drive shaft isn't serviceable...
  16. what video? i see there is a swf file that neither my windows or linux computer wants to open...
  17. if it is that center bearing (not the standard u-joint), has anyone tried tapping in a grease fitting? Is there room within the bearing housing for such a move?
  18. 2005 OB auto Noticed past few weeks, only in reverse. Seems to be coming from mid car and not wheels. Universal joint? Are they serviceable on this model/year?
  19. As was asked before, any symptoms before recent work. Any chance clogged cat? Disconnect cat and see if any better. It will be louder for sure :-)
