If you are going to do this. Use real "helicoil" style inserts (they look like a spring.) I used cheap rip offs that were like a thred with a threded hole in it. They just pulled right out after a couple of weeks. I am now getting the heads fixed again, after I took it too a pro repair guy and his welds have broken. So. Use expencive stuff. Also, remeber to NEVER drill further then the original hole. (like I did ) you will have oil flowing down the stud and all over the rocker cover, crossmember, driveshaft, and exhaust.

What it should of looked like.
Phizinza replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, I already emailed it twice to them, first time they said "sorry, we don't deal with this email this (subaru in other country)" second time they said they will look at it. But I only done the second time as I heard a subie dealer here in aus had a chat with some subaru ppl over lunch and told me I should email it again. Hopefully they build it. I just wish they would give it to me.... I'm to poor for a new subie -
I love my subie too Though it gets STi economy :-\ But sounds better I think :-p

Project Cheap:Build Lifted 86' GL Sedan Advice + Build
Phizinza replied to DrKrazy's topic in Members Rides
So Brats are quite expensive over there huh? I got a wicked deal with my Brat. It's basicly got no rust. It came with the EA81dc (deul carb motor, different head design) and it came with 14" wheels. The guy knew he was selling it cheaper then it was worth, but he had to get it out of the drive way. And the paint on it is just shocking. I've added some dents and scratches too it to. I guess good Brats are hard to find there in the US. It helps we don't get snow here in South Australia offen. Your rig is looking sweet. Talking about parts cars. Its hard enough for me to find a running turbo old skooler around here, lettal own a parts one... not a commen car in the wreckers too, as they don't break down and when they get rusting people just crush them . I was in a wreckers yard yesterday and htere was a EA81 wagon, almost rustless... poor thing. Must of blown an engine. But my brother and I are fixing up a old wagon. Lots of rust, but nothing bog can't fix! Its going to be a wicked offroader in a year or too. Good luck with PC -
Front diff interchangeability: The true answer

I think you'll find that front LSDs are not as popular as you would hope. I think there STi, or after market things. But I'm not sure. -

Not bad for what you have spent on it. Concidering my Brumby/Brat has cost me: $2800 car $650 bullbar, rollbar and tonneau $700 tyres $200 clutch and about $400 in other stuff There all AUD$ of cause Total $4750AUD ($4000USD) Its amazing how much of a price difference there is between Aus and USA. Not just the exchange rate either. That figure makes me sad. But I'm not a bargin hunter, and I do like my ute You have quite a beast there. But those other things, LSD, disks, ect, are going to bump up the total a bit huh? hmmm. There probably worth it. -
I agree, it does seem like a easy thing to do. But like I said before, I don't see the point. Unless your turning (past 45 degrees or so on the wheel,) or have odd sized tyres. I wouldn't think much would happen t the trans or diff. I have no experience in this, I am only going by what I've heard from other subie drivers. Well, I have driven my ute in 4WD a fair bit on pavement (because I forgot to take it out) and I only notice it when pulling inthe drive ways or car parks. Other wise it feels fine. But I do run all the same tyres and move them around on the car to ware them evenly. Any one here had bad experience with 4WD on pavement?

Anyone runnin' the 15" Pug flat spokes?
Phizinza replied to EYE_WHY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
WTF??? Metric wheels? I had no idea they even done that. You sure they wont fit 15" tyres? I have never heard of such madness before. As for outlawing the metric stuff, I think thats stupid. Its heaps easier to understand metric then imperial. But theres a standard out there, so why can't we stick with it. Even though tyres like 215/75R14's (215mm by 75% on 14 inch rims) is totaly stupid, I still think the system is working ok. Those black alloy pug's look pertty cool. Any idea what model pugs they came off of? -
That's been my dirtest job so far too... I hate that molly grease stuff. Funny story: My bro was fixing his mazda's front axle boots and he didn't get any of the special grease with the boot. So he pops down to the local "Holden" mechanic and asks for the grease it said to use in the manual "molydisulfide grease" or "molly grease." They didn't have a clue what he was on about. They said just use some HTB grease.... Hrmm, that's why I get dirty and do my own mechanics... [bTW, Holden is a car company here in Australia.]

Ummm.... whats wrong with having the 4WD? On a highway it doesn't really matter if your in 4WD. Someone here in Australia drove over 2000km on a highway stuck in 4WD, he still uses that trans I think. If you want to get more grunt off from the line, just use 4WD low range. It shouldn't harm the trans (unless you have weird sized tires.) Just don't to city traffic cornering while in 4WD. Plus, If I had front wheel drive only in low range I'd burn out my tires in no time... Am I missing something here? Why do you want FWD more then 4WD? You can always take off from the lights in 4WD low range then throw it in 2WD after going the 2nd gear.

Cos I'm a noob and have only worked on EA81's with 4sp boxes, does the EA82 5sp box use different amount of splines on the drive shafts? I thought it was only the turbo EA82 5sp boxes that had that. I might start looking into a 5sp box conversion now :-/ like I even have the money for a rear LSD, little own a front one :-/ -
I could of used a mp3 cd player and done something different with the center console, but that would cost me over $200, and since I already own my PDA and its 512mb SD card i thought i better not spend anymore. And with the headphone style jack sticking out (it sorta holds the PDA straight too) I can now plug in my 128mb MuVo. and anyone elses mp3 player. With all that said, I'm not a fan of the quality of mp3s. Heres a price list of everything I used. In AUD$ treadplate: $20 gauge cups (2): $10 PDA mount bracket: aprox$0.50 PDA charger: $19 GPS antenna: $25.50 GPS and charger: $110 512mb SD card: $68 PDA RX3417: $650 total: $903AUD... HOLY COW!!! i didn't want to see that. then theres the $140 amp and $99 Sub :-/ But atleast with this stereo you can take the whole player, not just a face plate. lol If I were to make a few of these (just the cut and bent treadplate) I'd want about $70, not easy to cut this stuff with a jigsaw. I think if you have the tools, give it a go your self. maybe I'll try and use adobe and the template so you can print out the template to save some time Maybe next time I'll be bothered to write it all up here.
-
Yeah, I have a 1.3mp cam in mine too. I also have microsoft voice command, so, I press a button and I can chose from any mp3 on my SD card. Pretty sweet really. I am also making a video that will play on it of some NFS underground 2 racing, should be cool to show off I could market these, but.... well...... I'm lazy.

Hey everyone. Just thought I'd share with you what my brother and I done yesterday. I could write it all up here, post all the pictures and stuff, and use up as much USMB bandwidth as possible. Or I could just send you to my site. Check out it all out here www.OffroadingSubarus.com No, I am not trying to advitise my site, I'm saving the members of this board bandwidth money. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my creation. Just a taste of it

EA81 - EA82 What's the difference...????
Phizinza replied to LiftedHatchSubie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just to say it differentlly again. EA81 are push rod motors. That means they have a CAM next to the crankshaft and then have rods (called pushrods) that go to a rocker assembly (the thing with arms that push the valves open and let them close) on both heads. A EA82 has a gear on the crankshaft that you put a belt on that connects to each CAM on each head. these cams directly puch the rocker assembly. EA82's have alloy rocker covers, EA81's have steel rocker covers. EA82's around about two inches wider then EA81's, but it makes no difference, you can put a EA81 in a EA82 body and vicesaversa. EA82's come with 5sp gearboxes, while EA81's come with 4sp. Just look at the engine, is the distributer on one of the heads, or near the middle of the block? (the distributer runs off the/a cam) Does it have [EA82] or [EA81] writen on the block? Umm, I hope you can understand all that. -
like the others said, what do you consider 'old school' ? EA82, EA81, EA71? older, like EA65 or EA61? (was there a EA61?) you can basically get a ft kit off the shelf for a EA82 or EA81 (well, thru mail order anyhow.) Have a look in the image gallery on this site. Theres heeps of pictures of lifted roo's in there Also check out the "sticky" threds in the "offroad" forum here. a sticky thred is ome that stays at the top of the page BTW.

Yeah, I only live aprox 8000miles from you I would like to see that engine close up, but I might have to turn my brat into a real sub first, lol. Nice looking ride
-
it should be able to do 80+ if everything is good. Start with checking what rallyruss said. Then you can move onto things like spark plugs and leads. I find my car runs A LOT better on the higher octain fuel. But I have a older model then you and its a "special" engine for that era. Welcome to the board.

Looky... Looky...My new Exhaust (with pics)
Phizinza replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's what I like about my 89' brumby, never came with a cat, never needs a cat I don't even think my dad's 85 carbed wagon has a cat. Is that normal? -
kind of newbie with a question.
Phizinza replied to soob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Umm... plug and play doesn't exist. Its "plug and PRAY" EA82 [carbed, dunno about your US models] is the 85's engine. Should fit right in.. -
yep, wd-40, I had a tight cable after pulling the engine out with the cable still attached, sprayed fair bitr of WD-40 and it works like new again. I should really learn to un bolt everything, last time I took the engine out I broke my throttle cable :-/ I keep making the same mistakes, over and over again. But a new one also sounds like a good idea

So i poured a bunch of acetone in my fuel tank...
Phizinza replied to Danbob99's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Some people refuse to belive. I belive it has worked for some, and hasn't worked for others. So, I'm going to do it, well I'll do it with my dad's 85 wagon as he drives it a lot for work, I'll do a "mpg" test on my ute, then try the acetone. -
what do you like about your suby?
Phizinza replied to Buddy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I could say "everything" but thats too ORIGINAL... :-p So, I'll pick one thing. The fact that everyone looks, and most young people look again. Mmmm, I love that 2" exhaust note. -

Phizinza replied to Danbob99's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Not that I belive much I read on the net, but I thought I'd save you some time reading what is on that first link And If thats true. It sounds like a wonderful additive. And I know what your saying now, what about all the bad affects the acetone will do Like I said, I don't belive everything I read. But I'm going to be checking to see if it will affect my feul lines by soaking one in it and if its all good I'll be doing some testing. And please, stop going on about 'I wont use it till its proven'. If you don't belive what is said in the links provided, you will have to do the tests your self to be convinced huh? So, why not do what I'm going to? Its only a few minutes of your day. Please don't take offence, I just get annoied when all I can read is people saying, it does't seem right. And not knowing anything anyway. If it takes you to see it with your own eyes. Please, test it your self. Or stop posting here. EDIT: oh, and don't forget petrol is a good paint striper too. Gee, that was a bit political of me
