Help! My '88 Justy Just Keeps On Dying!
BlueTrain replied to Gene's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ahh my friend, if theres someone around here who understands your plight, its me. i have a 96 chevy pickup that has had similar problems for the last, oh... 2 1/2 years or so. when its warm out, no problemo. but when it starts getting cold, then theres problems. (although the problem didnt appear last winter until the third week in february.. go figger) anyways, what happens is when it doesnt start, there is no fuel pump activation.. eventually it will start, but eventually can be 5 minutes or 5 hours.. the other thing is that it will just lose power all of a sudden while driving..speed doesnt matter..so after i coast to the shoulder, i have to wait a few minutes to start it again as the fuel pump aint a workin. when it cuts out, the gauges also go a bit screwy as well. the shops ive taken it to havent been able to figure it out. the fuel pump is fine, relays and fuses are fine. their best guess is the ecu is bad, but its a bit of $$ to throw at a guess. after i put some new shoes on my new loyale, im going to put a new ignition switch in the truck to see if that helps. good luck. intermittent problems are truly the worst. -
NEED input... what is my 87 GL worth?
BlueTrain replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, i checked and the kelly blue book value is $1630 if in "good" condition... that seems kind of low though.. good luck with the insurance company... -
Might be selling my Loyale... reasonable price?
BlueTrain replied to mummer43's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, exactly how minor is the body damage? but regardless, with the low miles, new parts, etc..you should be able to get at least 2 for it if the body is in decent shape.. -

if the body is in reasonably good shape, i'd say its a fair price. subarus tend to go for a lot more out here in the west though, so i am not exactly sure what "fair" would be back east. but it does have low miles and new parts, so that should help in selling it. good luck -
Well, lets see.. i have here an invoice for work done on it in april..previous owner bought it in february, but then the clutch went out..dealer agreed to split the repair costs, and some other work was done in addition to clutch.. as follows.... both front axles manual transmission vent as per recall rear main seal both valve cover gaskets and oil seal then theres a 20$ shop charge next to the water pump then next to belts there is a 25.24 parts charge and a 117.00 labor charge...i'm now assuming that means the timing belts, but am not completely sure..so, will be going over to the dealer tomorrow to inquire.. in any case, a smokin deal at 1500...body is in good condition with only 3 nickel sized surface rust spots and a couple very small dings... it took almost 2 years, but i finally found one...

Well, after almost 2 years of posting here and on the old board, ive finally bought a soob. had her checked out today and the mechanic said she's in beautiful shape. the engine noise i wrote about a while back turns out to be just some valve noise, and nothing to worry about. so, now ive got to do the fluid changes and a tune up for my own piece of mind. oh, 1 thing..in the records that were in the rig, it says that the timing belts were changed at 58,000...it now has 143000 on it, and my mechanic says at that mileage, the must have been changed again, as they would have blown out by now...so, is there some way i could verify when they were changed the second time?? just dont want em to go on me whilst on some mountain pass this winter... well, id write more but gotta go pick up a haynes before i head to work... cheers

he has never worked on a subaru, just american cars? being in colorado, you should be able to find a competent subaru mechanic that may be better equipped to diagnose your problem. just because your pump is working intermittently, doesnt mean its the pump itself..could be computer isnt getting a signal, computer itself, bad connection, etc... just hate to see ya throw down 450 for a new pump, and still have the problem.. good luck..

in the 4 years ive lived in missoula, i dont think ive ever been at a stoplight and not seen at least 1 red, white or gray ea-82...definitely the state car out here...2nd place is late 80's early 90's yota trucks or 4runners...

well, this rattling noise is only evident in mid-high rpm's..at idle and up to oh, around 2700-3000 is completely nonexixtent..the faster the rpm's, the faster the noise...
-
but if you shift at around 2500 or so, the noise is never heard..its only when it reaches about 3000 that its audible...
-
it does it under hard acceleration and is a bit loud, especially with the hood up.. almost a machine gun type sound...
-
well, im about to buy that 92 loyale i posted about a while back.. but, i was driving it tonight and noticed a loud "rapping noise" at around 3000 rpm...other than that, it drives great...aarghhh tell me it isnt something like a rod knock..if you shift at no higher that 2800 or so, noise is never heard..just once it gets up past 3000 or so, do you hear that rapping knocking sound... thanks
