I have one that I bought brand new for $25.00 at the Pasadena, MD Goodwill. I used it packed full on my trip back to Montana. I really like, and have used it on trips to keep the wayback empty for naps on the road. Been through pouring rain and never a drop inside, no wind noise. I like it better than rocket boxes 'cause it's only on when we need it.

I think she deserved an arm and a leg, should given the perp to the dog while you waited for the fuzz to finish their donuts.

Even without the tube frame it'd be OK if the half doors are welded in. It would then form a tub, might twist, but wouldn't fold up. Looks kewel.

Noah, when I do my Hawaii cruiser, I will be welding in the 1/2 doors after I get a lip on them. Also the full door top rails will be cut out, then moved in to the center to form a 'T', so I know the structural integrety will still be there. Unless I really thought I needed a tail gate, I would also weld in the bottom 1/2 of the rear hatch so it would be completely tubbed. Then I could hang a full size matching spare on the back, and maybe a jerry can as well. This would drive Hawaii DMV & cops NUTS, but they couldn't DO anything about it. As long as it got registered and licensed from another state, they have to accept it. heh, heh, heh ... How about WA, can I do this after we move there, or do I have to do it in Montana? Where there are (to quote the Outback Steakhouse), NO RULES! I did this many years ago (long before any of the regulars here were born.. 'cept maybe frag, eh?) to a split window VW bus. We cut the whole thing off at the beltline and left only the windshield. All the doors were welded shut (except the 1/2 rear hatch which was bottom hinged), and the front doors were cut down, a la CJ Jeep. The whole thing was painted O.D. with white stars, and a Mattel 50 cal machine gun was mounted on a post behind the front seat. I had eight inch wide rims on it, and with low pressure the damthing would almost float (we were tempted to try ... but actually hadn't drunk that much beer ... or whatever, this was 1967). We made many dune and Mexico surfing trips, and I drove it to work at a defense plant (but they made me park it in the back lot).

Thank you, thank you ... this is about what I'll probably build to take back to Hawaii when we return 'home', someday. Have to do it on the mainland and get it registered then ship/transfer. The Peoples Republic of Hawaii would never allow a chop job like that to get registered over there. Virgin switch.

I don't know haw hard it is to relocate the cross bars on a stock roof rack (ours isn't). But I've found that if I slide the front cross bar back to just in front of the 'B' pillar the noise is greatly reduced. I suspect it takes it out of the acellerated slipstream coming over the windshield.

You could do what I did with an old VW bus. Take a set of doors and cut a 'U' out of them so you have an opening like an old Jeep, weld a lip around the cut-out, and bolt it in place during the summer. That way you still have the stifness, you have a sill and some sense of being secured ... oh and legally, you still have a door. I've been looking all over for a set of ratty doors for my Barbie Jeep (Sidekick) to do the same again. no luck, either side of the border ...

When I installed the remote starter in our '00 I ran the power wire thru the grommet right down by the steering column. I stick an awl thru in the opposite direction, then use the wire to push the awl back out, result - a completely sealed hole.

I'm looking for a mid sized sedan that is reliable, discreet (not too flashy), but still sporty and fun to drive. ... All of those, especially the latter. I've read some mixed reviews regarding the legacy so I thought I'd ask you guys what you think of that car. We think's a great car. The negative things ive read about the legacy are that it gets poor gas mileage, ... compared to what other AWD sport sedan? is expensive compared to other cars in its class, ... around here we would say no other car ISA in it's class. and that it has poor acceleration and turbo lag. ... it's all relative. Drive one and compare to others in it's 'class', then make that subjective decision for yourself. I'll definitely be buying a used car, I'm thinking of an 04 or 05. ... if you're looking at an '04 or '05 you may want to check out new. Especially if you can find stale stock. The difference in interest may tip the scales to new. Any advice you could give me would be appreciated. ... you're welcome. Oh this is easy ... my absolutely favorite Subaru feature is the "Virgin Switch"! It creates SO much entertainment on this board .

Stick or auto? Auto? Do tight turning radii on dry pavement, and feel for 'torque bind' a vague crow-hopping or catching feeling. Stick? Put the nose against a telephone pole or wall and put the car in fourth gear. You should be able to stall the engine letting out the clutch real easy. If not, the clutch is toast, or soon will be.

Zefy, you don't know where I can find a couple of doors for my 'vert Trackick do ya? I've had NO luck in the lower 48. I want ratty two doors. they can be dented and stripped, I want to cut them down for summer 'Jeep' doors. I'll put Subaru logos on them (there, now it can stay in this forum).

I'd say you promoted her Tracker to the wrecking yard. See if you can score the drivers door for me, eh? Then you can find another one to clock from the other side so I can get a PAX door.

The process: OK, in the ongoing de-Brightonization of our 2000 wagon, I ordered Outback struts & springs from Jamie (YAY Jamie), and the locally owned tire store installed them yesterday. Bid time four hours (that's what it took them on the '95 Legacy switch-over ... actual time NINE hours!). Not happy, but they are honest so they will stick to the original estimate. Apparantly getting the front springs clocked correctly took three times on-&-off. The local Subaru dealer refused to give them any help over the phone (why am I not surprised). Also, if you do the switch, order all the bushings, plates etc. new. According to the mech they were hell to get off the old struts. The result: The car actually looks higher than an Outback, since there is no GM induced cladding and body panels on it. Looks a little off with the Legacy tires, and it will be at least another year before they need replacing, maybe two as well as they are wearing. I figure I can go up at least two full sizes nextr time. After driving it twenty miles or so I can say. "BOY, did our car ever need new struts!" The wear is insideous, and sneaks up on you. When you get new suspension ... WOW! Rock solid, firm but not harsh ride, and no rattles. The good: The Pretty One loves it (Isn't it great when your wife ASKS you to lift her car?), much easier getting in and out (anticipating the next time her back kicks up). The not-so-good: Everything I ever said on this board about Legacies being better driver's cars is true. It's just no longer has that riding-on-rails feeling it had before, even with worn shocks/springs. It feels solid and fully under control, but lane changes and uneven pavement/puddles in the tire grooves at high speed really transmit with the three inch higher CG. That said, it's just going to take some getting used to, and it will be MUCH better in the winter ... less snowplowing with the front valance. When I've got the car and my camera I'll find a stock Legacy and park next to it and take a pic of ... The Legaback!

NONE of that is normal. take it back and don't listen to them when they say it's 'normal'. Make them find a couple other '00s and drive them ... than ask them to explain' normal'. Our 2000 Legacy has 175,000 miles, of which we have driven 75,000+ all over the country, but predominately in NW Montana. Ive had the car in -27 deg, and +100, and have never seen ANY difference in shift patterns, or experienced lags, starts or untimely downshifts. They gave you a junk tranny ... make 'em do it over.

I've carried a weighed 1,200 lbs of rock in the back of our Legacy with no harm noted. Hell, that engine doesn't weigh more than two healthy Hawaiians or Samoans sitting in the back seat.

I just placed an order from Jamie for a full set of Outback struts and springs for The Pretty One's '00 Legacy. Time for new struts anyhow after 175,000 mostly Montana roads, and she wanted me to lift it while we're at it.
