What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
Drove mine through some deep water (lapping at the end of the hood, headlights submerged) and had to drain the rear diff AND transmission grease. $80 of fluids later she's good to go. I'll post pics when I get the front and rear vents done and the snorkel.

south carolina SUBARU owners
TN here. I'd be awesome to get some of the other SE owners together (who had something at least half-way offroad capable) and have a big Jeep trail meet or something.

Good news and bad news.... (87 Turbo - can you guess?)
Ahhh Murphy the $500 T-wag right? I think I at one point in time owned a car almost identical that I also paid $500 for. FT4WD 4spd auto. It was overheating when I bought it, new thermostat and radiator later I turned around and made a couple hundred dollars profit. Kinda miss it, ran pretty strong. Wonder if it's still driving around.... anyway good luck with getting Murphy back on the road!! He's been reliable for this long... some new head gaskets and he should be good to go for at least a few more years.

My new wagon :D
Somewhere here there's a thread on how to put the low range out of the EA82 d/r into the EJ d/r. I've got an EJ d/r originally from Australia and an EA82 d/r and am going to try it out this summer. It's a 3.9 final drive so I'll have to swap out the rear diff for a regular Legacys. I don't mind losing my 4.11, what good is it anyway if it can't get you up a steep hill or keep your revs below 3K at 70???

Glass-pack on the Outback today. It sounds alright, I just wanted to hear the engine instead of having to glance at the tac ever so often.

New to 92 loyales
If it's automatic then yes.

Just got a 1987 subaru gl
Who sold this thing to you? All you care about is cupholders, you didn't even know it was 4wd... somebody has commited Subaru sin by selling a Roo like that to somebody who has no idea what it even is. Hopefully being a member of this board will turn that around...

strange "line" in EA82 cylinder wall
Yeah these engines are becoming quite difficult to come by. I'll try to use some emory cloth on it and just not worry about it. I leaked so much oil it was hard to tell what it was burning and what it was leaking. Didn't smoke so I'm guessing it should be alright, especially after rubbing it down a tad.

Hey I'm over here in Eastern Tennessee. Still a little distance between us but welcome fellow Southeastern Subaru-er!!!

strange "line" in EA82 cylinder wall
Don't have any pics as I don't have a camera. There's a line that runs up and down with the piston. It's a black line and I CAN feel it when I run my finger over it. Otherwise the cylinder walls look fine. That particular cylinder (minus the strange mark) doesn't look any different from any of the others. Could this be a sign of a problem?

My 1996 Outback tops out at 110mph. Stock exhaust, even still has BOTH cats. I think with some opened up exhaust and maybe even a little rework to the heads should hit 120 ya think? Mine's a 5spd. Anyway back on subject. In the process of doing a complete reseal on my 5spd d/r EA82 TOURING wagon. Recently I've been driving it more, way more fun to drive than the Outback. May retire the Outback for a while after I get this beast in PERFECT running order. Maybe even stick the sway-bar rear end I've got sitting around under there. And some disc brakes MAYBE. My aunt will probably end up with this car, she's in desperate need for a Soob. I may keep all these extra parts for a wagon of my own... so many possibilities. I love it.

Old gen or Bust!
After falling in love with my '82 GL wagon and better getting to know my '89 touring wagon, I've decided I will be selling my Outback and whatever money I get out of it I will put into rebuilding the EA81 in the GL and possibly doing an EJ22 swap on the touring wagon. These cars are just so much more fun to drive. I'm also not a big fan of full time AWD. Understeer + body roll = MY HAIR IS TURNING GREY ALREADY? Anybody have the same opinion on newer Subarus?

'92 Loyale sedan
I had an '89 just like that. You'll get 36mpg pretty regularly on the highway if you keep the RPMs around 3k. I think that puts you at about 65mph. Great little run-around car.

Finally- my new 4wd D/R wagon!
Those wheels are Calmasters. Good shape too. I've got a chrome set but they're rusty. Never seen the black with chrome lip.

New to me '82 Subaru wagon
I know I know... PICS!!!! I'll have them up in a few days hopefully, if I can find my camera. 1982 2wd 5spd solid lifter hitachi carbed gl wagon. Little rust, rough interior, needs a wheel bearing (or two), a couple shocks, front left fender.... and oh yeah a tune-up. First tank has already whooped my Outbacks arse when it comes to fuel mileage. It has cruise, electric windows, power steering and a/c. Actually wish it didn't have all that but oh well. I suppose after a tune-up, valve adjustment, and an air filter I should be looking at 35mpg possibly? This thing's geared tall thank goodness, tired of turning high rpms in that darn Outback. This will be my new daily driver if I can get it straightened out.

tallest geared 2wd 5spd
i test drove an '82 gl-(5?) wagon with a 2wd 5spd with cruise, power steering, electric windows and cassette player. It's in alright shape, a little surface rust but the undercarriage and wheel wells look solid. I noticed riding down the interstate it was turning about 2500rpm at 65 in 5th gear???? I've never driven a Subie with that high of gearing. Anybody know if this is a rare transmission or not and what years was it offered??? 138,000 miles paint kinda rough damage to front right fender making driver door rough to open and shut. Ran very good. What's it worth??

Whats broke on your subaru lately.
Recently developed small front diff leak. Front right cv axle is now popping after making a snow run to the mountains. Other than that she has been a wonderfully reliable ride.

Requesting Advice
No it is 2wd which means better mileage. And the timing belt has apparently been done. I also forgot the mention the exhaust system from the cat back is new. I have yet to determine if the thing leaks, only looked at it but haven't driven it yet. I will give it a more thorough check over this weekend. I've had a few EA82s, I'm not afraid of them mechanically. Definitely prefer doing the belts on an EJ22 though. Would 38mpg hwy be feasible? The DLs are geared the same as their GL counterparts right? I've had a couple 2wd 5spd EA82s but one would turn 3500rpm at 65 while the other only turned 3000 at 65.

Requesting Advice
I'm looking at a 1988 Subaru DL Wagon with 135,XXX miles. Recently had timing belt done and tune-up. It's a DL so it's got no a/c, no power steering, and roll down windows with quad headlights. I like the idea of all the manual stuff, and I'm looking for something that gets better mileage than my Outback (26mpg with Yokohama Geolanders). What do you guys think it's worth? He's asking $1100 but am willing to pay nowhere near that. At that price it would take roughly 4 years to pay itself off. How much do you guys think it's worth? It's in very good condition overall with some surface rust around the edges of the front fenders but the rest of the body and undercarriage look really good.

Bring the Boxer Diesel to the US!
Subaru_dude replied to bendecker's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYour EA82 ate oil like a pig because of it's pcv design. Subarus aren't nearly as negatively effected by cold startup as inline or V engines because the cylinders are laying down, so not ALL of the oil runs out of them. Your Subarus were probably losing most of their oil either because they were leaking it or because it was going out through the pcv system, not because it was getting past the rings. Subarus hold their compression for a LONG LONG time.

My d/r ej has arrived
Subaru_dude replied to Subaru_dude's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell I'm still waiting on my current transmission to die. My original plan was to have it on standby for when this tranny failed but it seems it will be a while before that happens. I have all the seals to reseal it and the EA82 d/r gearset machined properly (I believe anyway) to fit the EJ. I'd like to reseal it, get it good and clean, and pop that EA82 d/r gearset in there and have it waiting on standby. I've just been lazy and haven't done that. BUT after doing some mild wheeling it's become obvious these plastic pos bumpers have GOT to go before I do any real wheeling. I MIGHT consider keeping the Outback DD and if I do, you got first dibbs on the tranny.
