got pulled over in my soob
calebz replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just so you know, In many states (WA and OR included) doing double the speed limit is immediately reckless driving regardless of what the cop or the judge think about it. Funny thing about consequences.. they are always there to bite you in the rump roast when you do something dumb;) -
Stupid 5-lug conversion problem, AGAIN!!!
calebz replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
UNfortunately, no. I had to do the same thing with my 5 lug setup.. I think it has something to do with using 2wd Xt6 control arms. The bolts are substantially larger, as are the holes in the control arm. Additional note: the outer cup on the 2wd XT6 Cv seems to be quite a lot larger than its 4wd brethren. Finding a stupid boot for it has turned out to be quite an adventure. -
Power Steering hose; decisions, decisions...

Pointer - Don't cross post. This is strictly a new gen thing. Thanks -
Well, just for the hell of it I hooked up the MBC and turned it all the way down the where I could hear the ball rattling inside. The tightened it just to the point to where I couldn't hear it rattle. That put me at 8-9psi. Think thats a bad thing with the TD04 and the 9.0:1 compression? The car seems to like it:-p

Its a bit on the noisy side.. A bit obnoxious too:-p Sorry, neglected to mention, the wastegate is getting signal straight from the turbo output. Boost is not fluttering or falling.. sticks right at 5-6 psi No aftermarket cams. Idle vacuum is rock steady at 18 inches. Didn't really pay attention to what the max was. I know it was quite a bit higher. I will throw a guess out at 26 inches or so. Will have to drive it again and check.
-
Current exhaust is stock WRX downpipe.. thats it No boost controller on there right now. Operating strictly on the wastegate. Even the stock EA82 wastegate solenoid has been removed. The 5-6 psi that its currently boosting to is nice and steady, no spikes or fluctuations. Will probably pop the MBC on there this evening to see what happens. I am a little concerned about the vacuum levels as well.. After a little readin it seems that most people here are in the 20-22 in/hg range, whereas mine sits steadily at 18.. That could be a timing issue though. Will explore that later.

True, but the 85 wasn't the only NA digidash GL-10.. The later ones came as SPFI

As many of you know, I am running a TD04 on a 9.0:1 EA82. I had heard that the stock wastegate on the TD04 was set to 7-8 PSI But for some reason I am only seeing 5-6.. No boost leaks that I can see/hear Also, vacuum is right around 18 in/hg at idle Does this sound normal or do I need to step up my search for leaks?

A challenge has been issued...Dyno results
calebz replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What sort of calculations did you use to come up with that number? Thats more than double the stock flow rate. Additionally, to run injectors that size, supporting mods would be required.. FPR and fuel pump at a minimum -

No worries.. I'll be working on something special for them in the next couple of months before move -
how do I get in that darn place??
calebz replied to erikvr's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ive had to do it twice now on 87-88 EA82 cars. I have always just reached my hand up there and dealt with it by feel.. its a little akward, but not the hardest thing I have ever done. -
I dorve my wagon for a year with a dry PS rack. Only time it was a pain in the rump roast was when I was parking in tight spots.. and even then it wasn't that hard. When putting it back together this last time, I replaced the rack with a used unit.. It sure is nice to have the PS back, but it wasn't that big of a deal to not have it.

Its running pretty well.. A little rough when it first starts, but that mostly has to do with having the AAV disable I imagine. Main problem at the moment is that the car is louder than hell and it needs one new axle and an alignment.. Just enough that I don't want to drive it on the streets too much. -
Welcome to the board. Sounds like you got a kickass little car. Wagons are the only way to go. In the search for your compressor, Its good to know that on many years, subaru used more than one AC style and compressor model. The Gen 2 people here could fill you in on the specifics. Also, If you are looking for a part, or have a part to sell, check our marketplace. Thats where it all happens. theres tons of good stuff in there.

No roof scoop.. The hood scoop is a WRX imitation.. similar in shape, but a little narrower and better suited to an EA82 hood. There are now at least 4 other people on the board that I can think of that are using the same scoop. They seem to work pretty well and are just the right size to allow airflow over the WRX IC. Front air dam, grill and skirts are from an 87 RX. Skirts and real lip are still in the garage waiting to be installed. Some time in the next couple of months, the car has to make a 5 hour trip, so getting it completed enough for that has taken priority over finishing the beautification process -

Here's the engine bay when I got the car from XSNRG: Not much useful in it eh?:-p Now: Don't have any 'now' pics.. but this one isn't too old There are a few intermediate pics.. some with the old IC set up on the old motor.. with the old turbo;) -
25 splines are on the front they work on the following EA82: Turbo 5 speeds and 4EAT 23 splines are for N/A 5 speeds and all 3AT(turbo and N/A)

Not done, but driveable. The only pics I had were of the car sitting in the garage. They just don't do it justice. So heres a new one for those that have been wondering (There will be a readers rides article coming soon giving more detail about whats been done thus far)

EA82T Behind the Flywheel
calebz replied to froggymike's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Its an access hole that apparently is only on the MPFI/Turbo motors. There is a (cork I think) gasket for it.. I have a new one in the garage somewhere. should be pretty cheap from the dealer if you wanted to replace it. -
Heaven forbid what have I gotten myself into!!
calebz replied to Skip's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Oh lord. I haven't had to do that in years. I gave up on my old chevy and switched it to HEI.. My 56 pontiac almost required using a matchbook.. Getting a feeler gauge in there was a PITA Points and I have never gotten along. I don't envy you. Is there a conversion available for th gen 1 cars? -
Yup. Straight swap.
-
You can swap the wiring pigtails between 87 and 88. takes about 5 minutes and requires a phillips screwdriver.. That may help in your testing.

Towing a 79 4WD with a tow bar
calebz replied to cricket's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
If its a 5 speed, you should be ok. Towing with a bar = 4 down. put it in neutral and away you go.
