Replacing Struts Do I need strut mounts?
Petersubaru replied to mtnbob's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI guess the worst thing that could happen is.....new struts installed only to find out next year that the bearing(s) start to squeek every time you turn the wheel...inspect the bearings (feel) for movement and and excessive play..you just be lucky and not have to change them out...but generally speaking with that many miles on the vehicle I would change them out if they "need it or not".....

Front wheel bearings. Preload by tightening?
Petersubaru replied to Gloyale's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have purchased and installed new front bearings for my ea82's (I went for the upgraded sealed bearings ) ...the bearings came from a shop that only sells bearings/bushing and they told me that a little play (very small amount) would be normal for the new item and since two bearings are used with a spacer on each side, they would run true when the proper torque is applied to the cv axle nut...they had two different versions of the same bearing.."normal", which was, I think, apparently for the stock application and the other bearing for the subaru had a little "extra" play built into them...for what purpose, I have no idea...maybe the bearing you have was only dragged thru the mud etc and never used with any dirt in it..clean up the bearing with brake fluid completely and if it still feels slightly gritty or turns smoothly and then slightly "catches" when turning with your hand , I'd consider the bearing would need to be replaced for the long term .....

Driveshaft needs removal and fuse question??
Petersubaru replied to Petersubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXmy friend was experienceing some vibration and we thought one of the ways to narrow down the problem would be to remove the driveshaft and see if the vibration would disappear...if it will leak from the front, then another plan of action will be taken...it worked for my vw vanagon with this method of removal, but then again it had flanges on each side if the shaft...Thanks....

Driveshaft needs removal and fuse question??

Blow-by question on a carbed engine??
this is rather a subjective question here, but, we are wondering what has happen to the ea82/carbed motor, if anything?... when removing the oil cap with the cars motor being turned Off after a highway run, .. smoke is rising from the oil filler tube that smells more "acidity"(a sharpness to it) rather then just gas or oil fumes burning...the oil still looks clean and the car most of the time does not get very warm because of the short trips and very cold weather...compression is about 130psi all around

Poll: What is your favorite de-rust/anti seize agent?
Petersubaru replied to Cowgirl's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI always run over the border to Michigan to buy the PB Blaster..probably the best "off the shelf" stuff one can buy...I would like to try the Kroil product, but it is difficult to find even in Mich...I think all the products out there will work for you sooner or later...the more money you pay, the "less patience" will be needed for the penetrant to work

1986 4x4 Wagon Carb
That's no fair...yours is not a stock set-up...but if you want, I could go slap a turbo on my diesel(originally designed for one) and then we could have a go at it..DOWN-HILL only of course..just kidding...although I am interested to know what "jets" you are useing in that holley???

1986 4x4 Wagon Carb
I need to correct myself here..the lower bushing/bearing #s are "DP105 and DP106 NAPA/ECHLIN (I don't know which one is smaller) and of course the pilot bearing...I would suggest that you first check the distri while it is in the car for "shaft wobble" by placing a feeler gauge between the reluctor and the pick-up nose..try to move the shaft sideways in one direction and then in the opposite direction and find out what the total movement is...anything more then 2 thou. is out of spec ...

1986 4x4 Wagon Carb
I re-did my distributor by ordering from partsamerica.com two different sizes of the "bushing/bearing" for the lower part of the shaft (one size is standard and the other size is slightly smaller in diameter to make up for the shaft wear)...the top "roller/ bearing" of the distributor is the same size as used when replaceing the "pilot bearing" when re-doing your clutch..in otherwords, the clutch pilot bearing and distr. bearing are interchangable..total cost about $10..real smooth and tight now

Power Steering Pump Failure??
Petersubaru replied to Petersubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI don't know if it is possible, but I was told that the P/S pump could be worn inside (not the bearings) that would cause the fluid to "churn-up" thus producing air bubbles which in turn makes the whinning noise ( who knows?)...........................................
