  1. Well my brother got a call from the cops on Monday that they found his Legacy in Capital Hill. The license plates were taken off and it was sitting in a private lot. They ran into a few things as the exterior has some damage as well as the interior. It looks like they broke the steering column lock, but my brother said it didn't look like the motor was messed with. His insurance is going to look at it, but I told him probably the best thing to do is if you can find replacement bumpers, hood, door in the junkyard and then re-paint it....that'd probably work out better in the long run. So with that being said, anyone know of any second gen Legacies that are being parted out or know where some may be in a junkyard? Here's a pic of the car as found.
  2. That I really don't know, but assuming everything is plug & play and all the shop needs to do is remove the old engine and put the new one in I would imagine they could do it in a couple hours. I would estimate 8 hrs of labor at least for a shop to do it. If the shop's hourly rate is $100/hr then your labor costs would be $800. Maybe others can chime in on the shop costs.
  3. Welcome to the USMB. In general if you get an engine from a similar model year car it should swap in ok. You could maybe go with a newer engine, swap on the intake manifold from your car and have everything work out ok, but I couldn't tell you off the top of my head which years would work.
  4. Welcome to the USMB. I'm going to move this thread to the new gen forum and delete your other one.
  5. Anyone have any more info or pictures of this electric motor converted subie?
  6. Is the reason the compressor turns off if the wheel is turned past a certain amount due to reducing load on the engine? I've never heard of it.
  7. Welcome to the USMB. The A/C compressor cycling is unfortunately normal. It can however may be minimized by ensuring the proper refrigerent charge is in the system. Does the air heat up too much? Are you using the fresh air or recirculating setting?
  8. There is a sub-fan (passenger side fan) short connector that ties both fans together and causes them to come on together. It's normally located behind the passenger side headlight. The diagram below shows the connector. See if there is a jumper connector in there. If not, try jumpering the wires and see if both fans operate together when the green diagnostic connectors are connected. http://main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/1992_legacy_radiator_fan_wiring_diagram.pdf
  9. Welcome to the USMB. I'm sure what you're wanting to do can be done, but I'm sure it would have its challenges. What year STi were you looking to use? I'm going to move your thread to the retrofitting thread where it may get some more input.
  10. Yeah, hope your daughter is feeling better. I edited your post and changed your email address to the wording above to minimize chances of spammers grabbing it.
  11. Welcome! Good to see more Subie owners in the Southern states
  12. Glad to hear you got the car back and it's working, even if it cost you a bit.
  13. When you say there's a delay in going and when you depress the accelerator....if you're on level ground and let your foot off the brake pedal when the car is in D, does it slowly move? Hope you get to feeling better soon!
  14. Matt, Do you know what year your EJ22 is from? My suggestion on adding cruise would be to try and find a cruise control setup on a mid 90's Impreza. They made an "add-on" kit which meant its interaction with the ECU was relatively limited or none at all. You would need to add things or tie into the existing brake switches, etc. Here is the install kit for the mid-90's Imprezas. This may help in determining what all you need and how to make the wiring work. http://main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/1997_Impreza_Cruise_add-on.pdf I actually grabbed a cruise throttle cable from an Impreza a couple years back when I was in the Denver area and was finally able to install the cruise in my Outback sport.
  15. Welcome to the USMB. Did O'Reilly's pull the codes from the ECU for you? I would suggest having them do that and report back on what codes (if any) are stored in the ECU.
  16. Jeszek, As always, excellent work and pictures. Those spider gears in the differential should be made out of hardened steel. Even with abuse, they "shouldn't" have failed, but if the abuse was severe enough I suppose anything is possible. I also think that the wrong fluid may have been used and/or that the metal flakes/particles in the oil could have cause premature wear on the gears, which lead to their premature failure. Does the differential and transmission share the same oil? Typically the inner workings of an automatic transmission requires a different type of oil than a differential with hypoid type gears.
  17. Yeah I'm not sure about the oil pump. It may be of a different design than Subarus....and might need to be replaced.
  18. It's really sad to hear about Ed's passing. I wasn't fortunate enough to meet him in person, but grew to know him on the USMB over the years. His knowledge and kindness will be missed.
