and dont forget about keeping the oil topped off!! I dont do oil changes anymore, but I do oil FILTER changes regularly! poor ol girl is leaking enough oil to need a quart just about every fillup these days (have plans to remedy that situation soon tho) she also does have the "cancer" associated with living in the salt belt, but amazingly the undercarraige is still in pretty good shape - mostly cosmetic corrosion.

Well, it finally happened - my Subaru finally turned 200,000 miles!! I put nearly 100 miles a day, 5 days a week on this car, and she just keeps on going! There arent many cars that I would trust with this many miles on them, but i wouldnt hesitate to drive this car across the country cause I know she would make it. next milestone, 250K!! Long live the SUBARU!!!!

I like the purple one myself, and that was actually the first one i did...but then those of you that have been to my website know that it is kinda my signature color...and being female, i wouldnt get hassled about it either... I also kinda like the top right one, kind of a burnt orange, would have to be a metallic tho.

was messing around in photoshop a few days ago, playing with differnt colors for the GL wagon... started with a good side shot of one of our wagons, cleaned it up a bit, and tried out different colors - what do ya'll think???

Congrats on getting her going!! what Connie said about being paid back is sooo true. Paid $150 for my GL wagon a little over three years ago, poured about another $1000 into her getting her up to snuff (clutch, both front axles, tires, battery, & altenator) and never looked back. this little car is about to join the 200K club and still going strong. wouldnt trade her for much of anything - ceptin maybe a dual range!! LOL (mine is only a 2wd) keep pluggin away at it and before you know it, you will have a great vehicle.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Subaru!! ebay can also be a decent parts source....we got some front rotors for one of the 89 GL wagons from there at a VERY reasonable price, brand new. Just be aware of the seller's "ratings" - check feedback etc... Have also bought shocks and struts on ebay, as well as a few other odds and ends. Good luck with the new toy!

I also put boxed 6x9's in the back of my wagon and had the same sliding around and tipping over issue (i like the speaker facing up so the sound makes it all the way to the front) - I solved it by screwing a small piece of plywood (about 3x6") to one end of the box so it sticks out the side a little - mainly as a tipping preventative, but it also works well in preventing the boxes from sliding around. stuck the boxes behind the rear wheel well, with the plywood end at the very back of the car - they stay put now, unless I get really wild around corners, and I dont do that much ps: the rear hatch lock works with the drivers door lock on my 89 GL wagon....no dash switch

Sorry, but I have to Disagree with the "idiot" thing at Advance Auto...The one we have here has a couple of VERY knowledgeable employees, one of whom even offered to let me use his personal compression tester when we had a no-start issue a while back - the store was "out of stock" at the time. I guess whether or not you have idiots behind the counter will vary from location to location, but the one here is pretty well staffed - thank goodness!! and thier prices beat the other two "auto" parts stores in the area. (and the nearest Subaru Dealer to me is a 3 1/2 hour drive one way - not something I can do on a regular basis!)

Sorry guys, but fog lights and high beams are a contradiction...you are not supposed to use your high beams in the fog, all it does is throw more light back at you, actually reducing your visibility. just two cents from a former long haul truck driver (12 years and about 1.5 million miles)......

in keeping with the subject - and since I dont have an owners manual to check...what weight gear oil should one use in a tranny in the northern climes...temps will be dropping to the neighborhood of -30 F over the winter.... and how often is it supposed to be changed?????

Hi Ray and welcome to the board. Hope your daughter joins up too, we need more gals here!! As for the Subaru - yes, the 87 should be the single point (throttle body) fuel injection. Not knowing when last it had one, I would suggest a basic tune up to start with in addition to the new fuel filter. New spark plugs, cap, rotor and wires if they need replacing. Highly recommend the NGK plugs, #BPR6ES, gapped at .044... In order to give more specific info we will need more detail about what the car is doing. Post more as you can. Good luck, These are GREAT little cars and relatively easy to keep running.

I second the fuel pumps...took several tries to get one in good enough shape for one of our cars. (thanks Will! ) good clean fuel tanks too (if possible) one that isnt so much a rust zoner thing, but for those that have access to the parts...the coil bracket with the ignition amplifier. There are no yards around here with older Subes to get parts from.... and maybe the drivers door window switches....oh yeah, and cargo covers!!

The question was HOW to put them back on?????????????? What does one use to re-attach them to the plates??? They were obviously "glued" on originally, but what do we use to "reglue" them?? rubber cement? the bleack silicone adhesive stuff, what works best?????

the GL10 seats are a bit more comfy than the stock DL or GL seats - just made that swap myself on the drivers side, makes my 1 hour commute to work a little more pleasant. a little better padding, height adjustment, lumbar support and headrests that are more adjustable than the lower end models. not sure about anything aftermarket tho....or from other vehicles.....

hi Eric - welcome to the USMB! yeah, 198 miles at the 1/2 tank mark is doin pretty good. 200 miles or better at that point is great mileage outta these cars. mine is a two wheel drive, and i get an average of just over 30 mpg - combination of county roads, and freeway driving, about 100 miles a day. I have gotten just shy of 32 mpg out of this car, but never quite broke that mark. as for the struts - will let those that have done them answer that one.

actually...just did wheel bearings and ball joint on an 89 GL wagon....talk about a pain in the behind - took an air hammer to get the old ball joint out! needless to say it was trashed. to get the boot installed on the new joint, used a large socket and a rubber mallet. piece of cake.

Thanks GD!! I kinda thought so, but never having done this before I wasnt sure and figured I would ask those that have done it.Now if my ball joint would get here, I can get the darn thing back together!!

I know this is gonna sound dumb, but here goes anyway.... when putting in new wheel bearings (front) do you pack the space between the spacer and the spindle with grease too??? or just leave it empty?? first time doing bearings and dont know...(i didnt take it apart either)

Have to agree with Miles on this one - find a suitable replacement and do the swap. cheaper and easier! Then kick your son in the behind for runnin the old motor dry!!

hi all, need to know how to adjust the clutch on my 89 GL wagon - with hill holder. also curious as to how often the clutch should be adjusted - I am currently putting about 100 miles a day on this car going to work and back, a combination of rural roads with a couple of little towns along the way, and freeway.
