  1. Hate to ask the obvious, but did you check your fuse box??? just a thought....
  2. Thanks for the reply Noah and Caboobaroo... We are proably going to just replace the calipers - not cheap, but way cheaper than an accident would be! Will be checking the rotor thickness and go from there - probably replace them just to be on the safe side - along with new pads and flex lines & we should be in goood shape. Again, thanks for the info! It is appreciated.
  3. Ok, got most of my questions answered by doing a search - LOTS of great info found - BUT Would like opinions on either cleaning up what I have, or replacing.... car is 88 GL d/r 5 spd wagon - got the front calipers off and took a good look at the the pistons, pads and rotors. Pads on the passenger side are nearly brand new but have gouges from the rotor on the inner pad, rotor is pretty rough looking, and the piston face is very rusty, with the rubber seal around it looking pretty weak. Drivers side - inner pad nearly gone and gouged up, outer pad about half, rotor and piston in same condition as pass side... This car has sat idle for roughly two years - used a good soaking of PB blaster to get the caliper bolts loose - we are trying to get this car road worthy as soon as possible. Would I be further ahead to go ahead and replace the calipers and rotors, or do you think we can get away with just turning the rotors?? Anyone have specs for the rotor minimum thickness?? Thanks in advance gang
  4. Follow Mr. Skip's directions...I just went thru all this with my car! The EGR solenoid is buried underneath all the vacuum lines and other misc stuff...but following the vacuum line from the valve on the backside of the motor will lead you right to it. Should have a white connector for the wires - the black connector goes to the purge solenoid, and green goes to the thermo sensor (thanks go to Skip for my knowledge of those!!) There is also another vacuum line attached to the front of it that goes towards throttle body... Good luck on finding a replacement. Be sure to check with a meter before you waste time pulling. Very common failure from what I understand.
  5. nice clean looking wagon ya got there. Blue isnt exactly my fav color, but if thats what ya want, definitly keep it in the family and go with the WRX World Rally Blue... Skipper47 - you said you were looking for a set of fog lights? Dont remember off hand who mine are made by, something like nightwatcher? but I really like these...they are both fog and driving lights - halogen - very easy to install, fit neatly under the bumper and are VERY bright on the driving side. Cast metal housing and replaceable bulbs too. They cost me right around $40, come with all the wiring and switches you will need to install them - only thing they didnt have were mounting bolts/screws as everbody has different installation needs.
  6. sheesh, after reading all those, i feel like a - er - vertically challenged at 5'4"...but I fit in my Sube just fine! And I dont even have the seat all the way forward!!!!
  7. 89 GL wagon - yes unrelated to Subies but 67 F-250 yes also!
  8. Welcome to the wonderful world of Subaru's!! And, yes, Our World IS Flat!!! So where are ya - I too am in Wisconsin, near dead center of the state. Have 5 Subie wagons here, ranging from 85 - 89. These are great little cars! Altho sometimes they can be frustrating - when they up and wont start - but they arent that hard to fix - a lot of fun to drive, the wagons especially are very versatile. The folks here are great, and very helpful, but do use the search function - 9 times outta 10 somebody has asked already, usually more than once... :-p
  9. have you tried tracing the wires under the hood to see exactly where they go/lead too??? The switch may have been to something that a previous owner had added, like auxiliary lights, but removed before they sold the car.... I would try tracing the wires from the switch all the way thru the firewall and see where they lead you....
  10. Horribly dis-illusioned with my Subie right now. For some unknown reason, it wont start....turns over great, got spark to all four plugs (possibly not quite strong enough-will be checking on that), getting plenty of fuel in the throttle body....but not firing off....must do more testing to find the reason why. But on an up note...it didnt leave me stranded anywhere!!! sitting in my driveway!! went out to get her warmed up on Friday and it just wouldnt start. So for the time being I am demoted to driving a POS 89 Ford Taurus ....dont get me wrong, I like Ford for the most part, but the Taurus is NOT one of my favorites.....
  11. I love that! only 10,500 miles???? that Subie isnt even broken in yet!!!! even if that was a typo, and it is supposed to be 100,500, it still has LOTS of life left in her!
  12. um, skip...can you get a little more specific here...I am not sure what or where you are talking about????? call me an idiot, but picture would be extremely helpful....please? there a several rubber tubes around the throttle body area, some connected to it, others to the plenum...etc....I have NO experience with this stuff! 'splian it like you are trying to 'splain it to a non sube person.... it is hard for me to visualize sometimes... Also, can you give more detail on the timing light thing...have no way of doing compression check, but do have a timing light...how do i set up the light to prove/disprove a jumped belt??????? Thanks in advance...
  13. tested spark at the individual plugs...good strong blue spark - got my finger a little too close to one of the plugs and got bit, but good!! so I dont think the problem is with that - altho, I have been wrong before.... What next? And, yes - my real account is working again!!!! Thank You John C.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. I also had that problem till I installed a little thing called a wiper snuggy....the spring that holds the wiper arm is old and kinda loose on mine....tried bending the arm itself, but didnt help much. wiper snuggies can be purchased at you fav auto parts store (car quest, advance, etc) or a truckstop - they come in black and chrome, sold in pairs, naturally, for around $5...metal rod with a loop and two hooks in it...one end installs at the base of your wiper arm below the pivot point, the other end further up near the middle of the arm...pulls the arm towards the windshield...works great. Only thing you have to remember is to unhook the upper end if you want to pull the wiper away from the windshield for cleaning with a squeegee at the gas station. A little bit of a pain to get the bottom end in the right position, but once you do, the upper end slips over the arm easily.
  15. Dependibility being first! Ease of owner repair, fun to drive, personality plus, handles well in all road conditions, good gas mileage, versatility, did I mention fun to drive? lol considering all the different makes and models of cars I have owned over the years, my Soob is by far the most dependable and versatile car I have ever owned. the one and only time she actually left me on the side of the road could be considered my fault for not changing the timing belts when I first got her, like it was recommended to me to do! guaranteed that will NEVER happen again! My only complaint with this car is that it isnt the most comfortable on long road trips....that seat just gets sooo uncomfortable after so many miles, no adjustment makes much difference...but I can live with it, cause I dont make that many long road trips! (after driving a behemoth of a lincoln that felt like it was floating - it is a VERY noticable difference) But I do love my Brumhilda!
  16. Thanks to all the compliments on my meager efforts... harpua - if I minded somebody playing with the artwork, I wouldnt have posted it on the board! like the camo looking text you did, pretty cool. Dont you just hate it when you lose work like that! and - you will be getting an email from me regarding your project....subject will be "project idea" - looking forward to hearing what it is. again, thanks everybody for the compliments...does my poor broken ego good!!!
  17. rwd is more apt to thro you into a skid in icy conditions than a front whl drive will....altho rwd does have it's place, for my money I prefer the fwd in snowy, icy conditions. I too have a fwd only wagon and very rarely have a problem in snow. it has to be pretty darn deep for my lil wagon to get stuck...so far the only time i have gotten stuck with it was trying to back out of the driveway with a very large drift behind me...got myself unstuck by rocking it and then drove forward thru the middle of the yard!!
  18. well, first I would turn on the signal, and get out and check the bulbs....if all bulbs are lit, then it is probably the flasher unit. process of elimination.
  19. I am more than willing to draw something up for you guys up there in the REAL frozen north! Just give me an idea of what you want.... Brian - The mountain was kept simple to keep the triangular design he said he wanted......it can be changed if he doesnt like it tho.... Harpua - nice work, but...my personal thought only, the lettering is kinda hard to read - too ornate. I like the car tho....what program do you use for graphics? and finally...did a color version of the design
  20. Thanks, john....just waiting for the one who asked for it to get a look and tell me what he thinks!!
  21. Rooinator - is this sort of what you had in mind??? just a simple black and white drawing at the moment but color can easily be added.
  22. one heck of a write up on that 914...lots of good pics too! interesting project!
  23. definitely go with the polish and clearcoat!!! buff it out to that wonderful mirror finish and seal it up. looks good tho...keep up the good work!
  24. John - I cant "go to the yard" for anything around here...none of the so called junkyards around here have anything old enough! I do have two parts cars sitting in MY yard however. At this poing we just need to get the darn window working and are looking at putting in aftermarket switch to run that window. However, not quite sure how to go about it. I am thinking I would want a switch that is "momentary on/off/momentary on" (have to hold it in either "on" position and automatically goes back to the off position when released) .... Just not quite sure how to run the wires on this....wouldnt I need to ground it somehow? Snowman!!! HELP!!! you have done this, right?
