The Quest for rear E-brake...
I sit here shaking my head, if using the rear parking brake doesn't work in a rally, then I'd better get busy telling all the WRC drivers to stop using theirs. The idea of using the rear brake in a rally is to lock up the rear wheels to cause them to loose traction. This is done for only a split second, usually jusy a tap of the brake, once traction is lost, and power is applied the wheels will spin and the rear will slide, thus reducing the radius of the turn. Why this may not work in a rallyx is because the speed is not there, applying the rear brake will probably scub off too much speed and the rear will not slide around as hoped for.

Where to buy a JDM Transmission
Dr. RX replied to subieman's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXTizzle, I think these guys are inot the GD series cars, they wouldn't have an auto tranny for a 90 Legacy. Here are some more places to try: http://www.foreignenginesinc.com/ http://www.nippon-motors.com/ http://www.usedengines.com/ http://www.kwcengine.com/ http://www.risingsunengines.com/ Hope they help.

RX....why?
Yep, that was the gen 1, we got the gen 2.

TD04 headcount
I'm not running it on any engine yet, but I have an almost brand new TD04 sitting on my garage floor. I'm planning to use it on a DOHC EJ22T that I am building.

RX....why?
Yep, I'll have to agree, I scoured the books trying to find where I thought I saw the 3.90 D/R FT4WD tranny info and can't find it, I did find that the XT6 does have a S/R FT4WD tranny with a 3.90. so that may be where the S/R FT4WD center lock diff tranny that I have came from. So, after much review of all my technical data, I'm going to have to agree (and it hurts to do this jk) with Calebz, there isn't a FT4WD D/R 5 speed tranny with a 3.90 ratio.

The Quest for rear E-brake...
Actually there is someone even closer to completing this then PoorMan, but I am sworn to secrecy. I had this figured out, but never got around to installing it, I sold my EA82 so I didn't need the parts any more, I sold the parts and explained what needed to be done and soon it will be. Anyway, good find, I knew there was more then one way to do this.

Well, I went and did it

RX....why?
OK, FT4WD D/R trannys came with a 3.90 ratio, see the 88 tranny data I posted.

John Mudrat - Adapter or others with answers
If I remember correctly, the EJ series axles are four milimeters longer then the EA82 series, so basically they are the same length. Also, you couldn't use EA82 series axle with your Legacy front suspension, the bearing is different. Your EJ axle will probably have 25 splines, so you will pobably have to get the inside joint changed, I believe they will interchange. When I installed an EJ setup into an EA82 series car, I needed to shorten the EA82 drive line 55mm, so the EA tranny would be shorter then your current drive line. The one thing I didn't do was to see if I could switch drivelines, if so, all you'll need is an EA82 driveline.

RX....why?
Calebz, for some reason I thought you agreed with the guy about the S/R tanny in the RX, I re-read it again and see that you didn't. Not sure what you are talking about with the guy and the 3.90, he told us it was a 'hillbillied' car and wasn't original. About teh auto, look at the link I posted on the 89 options, you see an auto as an option for the RX in 89. 4RnrRick, here is a link to an 86 tranny data page and an 88 tranny data page, they should answer all your questions. http://www.corkysrocks.net/86transdata.jpg http://www.corkysrocks.net/88transdata.jpg Just remember, the 86 is an On-demad 4WD and the 88 is a FT4WD.

RX....why?
The doctor is in the house. Alright, first off, and I know Calebz will disagree, but all RXs with standard trannys had D/Rs, 85 to 86 had on-demand 4WD D/R, but from 87 to 89 they had Full Time 4WD D/R trannies with center locking diffs. In 89 there was an optional automatic of the RX (first and only year offered). With the expection of the automatics, all RXs have LSD rear diffs. In 90, Subaru release a RS which was close to a RX in looks only, very few were turbos, and even then only had a single range tranny. These are what most people see when they say they saw a RX with a single range tranny. To answer your question, the RX is to the EA82 series car what the WRX is to the GC and GD series Imprezas. It was a car that Subaru set up for rallying and made availabe to the public. I hope this answers your question.

How do you find cheap Subies?
Just start talking Subaru to everyone you meet, sooner or later someone will say, "Heck I've got one of those I'd like to get rid of, if you come and tow it away, it's yours." That has happened to many people here on the board. Some people will actually talk the price down for you since they are ashamed of asking so much for what they consider a worthless car. Some car will need to be fixed, but if you are mechanically inclined, they are easy to fix. I recently had to turn away a 80 Hatch 4WD 1600 that I could have had for nothing because the guy needed (read that as wife demanded) to get rid of it. All it needed was a tranny, but I would have upgraded it to an EA81 witha 5 speed D/R. They are out there, just keep aware of things, and they will fall into your lap.

LSD's: 3.7 or 3.9? replacing 3.9
I'm going to be in Sisters around Christmas, I can show you how if you'd like. I can bring the special tool for removing the stub axles. If you have everything all ready, the whole process takes less then an hour.

LSD's? What vehicles?
I have a FT4WD 5 speed tranny with a center lock that came from a N/A 89 sedan, it didn't have a LSD rear diff. My son told me about that Thomas guys, and you seemed to have that same affliction. Hey, if your looking for him, I'll tell him to stop by.

LSD's? What vehicles?
Well, unless it was a Turbo, it didn't get it, just having a FT4WD 5 speed wasn't good enough. JESUS???? You must be getting me confused with my son.

- Holiday for some
Well, here I sit at work while some of you are at home enjoying a holiday. For our Canadian friends it is Thanksgiving Day (I wonder if they server turkey for dinner), for the Italians is Columbus day (lucky federal workers), and for the Native Americans it's 'Oh S*%t, there goes the neighborhood day'.- 87 RX manual
That's OK, I just didn't want Shawn to send you something you didn't want, and then have you mad at him.- 87 RX manual
Hey Vowels, is this what you want, the owners manual, or do you want the Factory Service Manual (repair manual)?????- Weird Electrical Problem (long)
Thanks for all the help guys, and yes, even the teacher need to be taught sometimes. A side note about the starter, I checked will a dealer about a new one, it's around $100, but he didn't have one in stock. This starters fit every automatic Subaru EA82 and EJ22, so there are a lot of cars out there with these starter, the guy at the dealer checked his sale history on this starter, and he has NEVER sold one. These starters are rugged, the standards starters are different.- Weird Electrical Problem (long)
For which model year did you get that explaination of the code from, it makes a difference. It sounds like a code for an EJ series engine. My second post here states what it is for the car in question. Thanks for the effort though.- Weird Electrical Problem (long)
Well, I still haven't figured it out, but now it starts just fine. I removed the bolt from the starter that holds the ground, looked at the nut, washer, bolt and the contact points on the starter and tranny, all were clean and showed no sign of any build up, I bolted it back together, and gave it a try. Guess what, that same damn thing, clicking, then slow spinning of the engine that gets progressively faster, but never fast enough. So now I'm getting really pissed, I start talking to the wife about getting another Subaru, to which she agrees (that's the first miracle), so I say I'll give it one more try. Well by now you've probably guess it, that damn thing starts right up, so I shut it down, try it again, bang, it starts no problem. I did that at least 10 time in the next half hour, each time it started right away. Go figure, I'm still scratching my head.- Weird Electrical Problem (long)
Some additional info that I forgot, it does start occasionally. Also the battery is less then 6 months old, so I'm pretty sure it is not the battery. I plan to check the grounding as my next step. There is really nothing much in the starter circuit, the positive goes from the battery directly to the starter, the ign swith and the inhibitor switch (auto tranny) are just in the pathway to groung the circuit.- Weird Electrical Problem (long)
Please read my post, the battery is fully charged and tested, it is less the 6 months old. - Holiday for some
