'FREE' gen 1 brat stuff
uncoolperson replied to uncoolperson's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
okay here's what i've grabbed for everybody... the cars is up for grabs someone with a flat bed come take it and pull the stuff i got to angry at. tailgate (missing handle and the cover for the mechanism... pics to come pass side taillight assembly (none on drivers) mirror and gas pedal sorry there was no radiator, and the fenders well two bolts just poped off (all rusty) and two became rounded... i figure rather that me beating them off someone might grab the car and make an effort (seeing as i'm sure there's a trick to make it work) -

It's kinda become a tradition to hit the gas station by casino on the way in and out. water, gas, oil and air. give me a call first as i'm waiting for someone to get off work (the friend with the hatch) -

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/12362Starting_Tilt.jpg about this much... well maybe not with the lift, but it was a good place to post the pic
-
gonna work on a lift... seems difficult to lift a gen 1 brat. in time though i'll figure it out
-
so i went and got myself some 14" pugs and some studded tires. and i learned some things from this... 1. pulling studs sucks... i mean really sucks! 2. my frame is all bent, or something is. it seems as though the drivers side (front and back) is about 1" further forward than the pass. 3. my fenders are/were and 50/50 mix of bondo and metal... with some of that metal being rust. now they are more of a 50/50 of there and not. 4. i need a new straight brat and a lift to avoid some of these. who's got an incredibly cheap(costs nothing more than me getting it out of your yard)straight brat. sorry about the terrible pic... camera sucks tire dif http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/123622.jpg http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/123621.JPG before side http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/123623.jpg after side http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/123624.jpg

I'll work at that interior. i've already taken the brush guard (sorry, i probably should've re-worded that) ........................................................................................... it's available if it's not listed above (other people called it) or below(I've pulled/called it): list of stuff i've taken or plan to: -------------------------------- steering related stuff engine break boost driver side hub ( i think that's what it's called) coil and the small important enginey things radiator/fan seats(if i'm adventurous) halfshafts (up front so far) possibly the crossmember (the big metal guy holding the steering stuff) brush guard lights owners manual! shifter knob and 4wd knob just say what you want and i'll try to grab it. day light and the annoyance factor being the only reason i'll be calling it a day... I'll take some pics when i get back to it and try to make a third trip (if the guy isn't annoyed with me) if i make a third trip i make ask for donations to taking the guy and his wife to dinner or something. ........................................................................................... -
okay no lift yet, but some day... maybe Because a brat should look bigger and meaner than my bosses lifted dodge!

what? your passenger side fender was looking great! -
so apparently rocks are bad for steering... when i first got the car (79 brat) two problems were left unsolved (because we were lazy?)... a break pedal that like to stick down (play dead?) and the steering shaft (i think that's what it's called) is rubbing against the halfshaft. well the steering finaly went in a hail of bearings from the hub (again not sure on terminology) and everything else on the drivers side, halfshaft gone and other maddness. replaced the steering assembly, halfshaft, hub, and such.... still the shaft is being too friendly with the halfshaft (this dance needs some chaperones) and really close, probably rubbing while driving. my brother (mudisfun) has thrown out the idea that perhaps the big metal crossbar that holds everything is all bent from smacking too many rocks (or curbs in the life before me). a fellow board memeber sugested lifting the rig and setting it down on something to bend it back, or to pull the cross bar and replace/bend it back. my idea was slightly easier, two small wedges of sorts mounted between the flat parts of the steering assembly and the crossbar to give it the right twist. any ideas.... should it (the steering shaft) really be about 0.5 cm away from the halfshaft. again sorry about the hugely bad grammer/terminology and in general being dumb. also the long post anyone have a picture of how close the stearing shaft and half shaft should be?

i know the guy is all up for handing it off to someone...(no title though) if you have a flat bed, i've already grabbed most everything attached to the front wheels... and in planning are the rear (if i'm adventurous, it's 'parked' on top a bunch of black berry bushes, kinda suspended by them) as for me finding a home for it... i'd probably offer to get it towed to a junk yard, if he didn't live 100 feet from the one he works at. -

it's a 78 (i believe) northwet, my brother was telling me he remembers the tailgate being beat up, so i'll take some pictures and try to plan a third trip (if we haven't overdone our welcome) -

I'll print all this out before i make the next run (probably the last...) this weekend and yell back the results from the viking raid -
anyone that met up for the convoy from whatcom county to wcss7 might remember the guy that came up offering to let us go through his brat... for free(so far anyway). well mudisfun and myself went and raided a few things, this guy was ultra nice... if we got stuck on a bolt he'd come over and figure it out for us... got all kinds of nifty stuff just handed to us out of his garage (example and 3rd eye which i believe my brother plans to give to one eye). we decided too much hassle to save the car (no title, some other things missing, etc... so we're grabbing parts) if anyone wants some gen 1 stuff let one of us know, and i'll try to remember... he plans on crushing it probably the winter (when he 'finally get's tired of the thing') so send those requests... if its easy i'll grab it, if you're close i'll try to get you in contact with him (he seemed hip to that idea)

Corrosion on battery terminals
uncoolperson replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my two cents (sorry to steal the line but it's a good pun here) i was one told to take a few cents (pennies) and tape them between the base of the terminal and the clamp type thing.... and when they get all gross replace em (the pennies)... from what i remember (7 years ago) it seemed to work great on my pick up (sorry non-soob). something i just remembered after reading this post.... might not even work. -
screw the cap on real tight, and don't peak.... if you can't see it, it's not there.... or keep two half bottles of 10-30 under the hood (just split one between two bottles) and just pretend those are "left overs" from the oil change and the oil fill.
