  1. Do investigate the CV joint boots. Sometimes they split and spray grease on the exhaust - but a mech should've spotted it. Possible center differential going bad. When you turn - is it just the 'feeling' or do you hear clicking or knocking? If you hear something, is it one side versus the other? That's a CV joint. Center differential is a lot more expensive than CV joints. get it to a GOOD Subaru mechanic. Unfortunately, this sounds more like your problem. Carl
  2. Are you running different sized tires or a spare? Done so recently? We also do need to know what tranny you have. Carl
  3. I once read that on the dunes, when the big Fords and Dodges are stuck, the soobs go swimming up trhu the sand to pull 'em out! maybe cause they're lighter? I dunno. Carl
  4. Quick answer, probably either is OK. Slightly longer answer, tight engine, light duty, 10-40 OK. BUT, if the engine smokes a little or will be towing or doing other hard duties - 10-50 might give you an edge. Oh, never think an older engine doesn't deserve regular oil changes - even one that may burn some oil. Any indication that rings are worn/bad will also mean combustion products AND raw fuel are blowing by into the crankcase. So changing the oil will help remove those and keep the viscosity up. my $.02 Carl
  5. I believe there are 2 temp sensors. One is coolant, but the other one is used by the cpu to determine 'choke' conditions. What color is the smoke out the back? definitely fuel? Look for the engine temp sesor and related wiring - maybe just disconnected or cut. maybe bad sensor. let us know OK? Carl
  6. I might be shopping for a WRX wagon soon. Any news on what type auto tranny they'll get? Sport shift at least - I hope? I dunno, might get a manual. I assume that's gonna be a 5 speed not 6? Carl
  7. If you haven't addressed them, a '92 could need both a PCV valve and some type of 'de-carbon' treatment. A hose held to the ear and moved around different areas under the hood may help eliminate some items. If it is a snapping noise maybe wires or coilpack.
  8. If this is based on one tankful, I'd suspect someone siphoned some gas out for their 'donorcycle',car or lawnmower.
  9. does it smell like caramel, sugar, sweet? If so, that is coolant.
  10. You could purposely glue a weight to the shaft to see if it produces the same effect. If you happen to be opposite the bad side it may reduce the effect. I kinda like the diff idea though.

  12. your symptom seems unusual for 'torqu bind' but it may still be useful to use the FWD fuse under the hood and see if the symptom goes away.
  13. I know hbdad has been chasing this problem for a long time. I think it may be time for some creative person to find a way to measure his 'residual' brake line pressure against a normal vehicle - sorta like a leak down test but in this one we hope for a low number in a short time.
  14. search on this issue - lots of info. try terms like; torque bind clutch pack duty solenoid c tailshaft
  15. Not only could it be a bad rad cap - it most likely was. I just had an issue like this in my daily driver Dodge Avenger. It would bubble and boil into the o'flow bottle because the rad cap was not holding pressure. Subarus tend to exacerbate any issue with slightly low coolant due to the 'reverse' coolant flow out the top of the radiator - making sucking a big air bubble into the engine to hang around the TB or heater core more likely - and leading possibly to localizzed overheating, causing more pressure, more coolant loss, worse problems, etc. Soob owners should watch their coolant like a hawk. If the mech. did a good job 'burping' the system I bet you're OK. Still, watch the o'flow carfully for the next few hubdred miles. Triple check it.
  16. No experience with it, but I have read of people returning them, I don't know if they got a replacement or not. Maybe just poor QC at the plant (you know "The Customer is our final QC" type thing). Let us know how it works OK?
  17. I see no reason why a diesel-electric hybrid couldn't figure into Subarus plans.
  18. please also search this sight for coolant system purging, burping, entrapped air, etc. You will need those instructions after repairs are done.
  19. pretend there is an egg on top of the accelerator that must not be cracked!
  20. Look at the tires too, if you by some WEIRD chance have different tires, fron to rear, it can feel very starnge. A friend once had radials on one end and bias ply on the other and it felt like his car was on top of bowling balls!
  21. '03 H6 OBW Annoyingly harsh downshifting at high speeds wind noise that's all so far (more details here; http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=791 )
  22. Are the injectors for 3/4 at the end of the fuel circuit? Could be the regulator on the end of the rail is weak. I think swapping the wires is the best idea to really know where to go next.
  23. operates in 15 second bursts. adds over 90 pounds of weight. 11 pounds equals about 1 hp so subtract about 8 or so from the 38 or whatever the claim is. Still, maybe some lighter batteries will come along in the future. Wonder how many 15 second bursts at 6 psi a 90lb tank of compressed air would give you?
  24. To get an idea of how some documentaries can be so entertaining, try to find a copy of Hands on a Hardbody. It concerns a competition to win a Nissan pickup truck over in east Texas. The beauty of it is the people, ordinary kooky folks thrown together in extraordinay circumstances. Very ironic statement, predictions about the upcoming event were taped in the begininng - nice approach. Then asking folks how they were preparing, if they had a 'training regimen', etc. Funny stuff. Also, there is a PBS (IIRC) doc about 'noodling' - catching catfish by hand. Also. the doc about spelling bees called Spellbound is OK. An old doc called Gizmo is cool but uses stock newsreel stuff with some narration. I've enjoyed a lot of the First Rights movies from Hollywood Video rental - I think they have a systen for promoting indie-type stuff. Really - Hands on a Hardbody is a hoot!
