  1. Hi Again! I Have the Idea (Maybe the Project) of Change all the Backlight Bulbs of at least one of my Wagon´s Dashboard, to H.I.D White L.E.D.s (High Intensity Discharge Light Emission Diodes) Have you seen those? They look like the White Ones on the Base-right of this Image: They´re so Bright!, not like Common Leds, so that´s Why they´re Called H.I.D. L.E.D.s. I have two in the Map lights at the Roof, but They Aren´t Extremly Bright, I think that if a Common Bulb do 5 Watts Output, those L.E.D.s may do only 7 Watts Output, but I´m not Sure... Why Change the Backlights? ... Well, both my Wagons got the Yellowish Backlight (Found on the early EA82´s), instead of the Greener backlight Found on the Newer ones, so, it looks Like it is Just the Direct Light of the Bulb, with no Tint at All... and the Dashboard is so Pretty for that illumination. :-\ This is how they Look: So, the seven Questions are: Did a Brighter Backlight illumination be Harmful? I think I can use the Dimmer lights on L.E.D.s, isn´t it? is Possible to Change all the Bulbs for those L.E.D.s? Are all of those Backlight Bulbs, the Same? What do you Think About? Have anyone Tried somethin´ like That before? Do you think the Dashboard will look Nicer with Brighter White Lights, or I will just make it look Uglier? Shall I use other color than White? Finally, I must say that those H.I.D. White L.E.D.s, Looks like a Standard Neon tube´s Light, Plain White, but Near to the Blue... Any opinions / Suggestions \ Ideas will be Wellcome!   2. Hello all, I took my wife's 2005 Outback to the dealer about 2 years ago for a recall-mandated swap of the passenger-side airbag. Ever since then, the dash has been super-noisy -- creaks, squeaks, all kinds of noises -- when it's hot outside, when it's cold outside, just about any time. I'd like to figure out what's going on and fix it. Theory: the dealer takes the whole dash out to do the job, and they didn't tighten things up properly when reinstalling the dash. Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Tired of the creaky dashboard in Watertown, Mass. Jeff
  3. Hello. Spanking new to this forum. I'm doing minor restoration to 1996 Impreza I bought for $600 (only 90K miles!). Basically, I'm detailing/major cleaning of interior. With much much difficulty I pulled the instrument cluster out in order to replace all the bulbs, some of which were burnt out. This model has a nasty mechanical speedometer/odometer cable rather than a wiring harness like newer models, plus (at least in my experience) there is hardly any slack at all within which to twist & tilt the instrument cluster unit. My wrists are all scratched up from trying, and I actually broke one of the clear plastic tabs keeping the clear lens aligned. Dash lights are green as usual, but the "mechless" stereo unit I installed (BOSS) has an intense blue display. I'm changing the dash lights to blue to appear more consistent. I'm replacing the instrument backlights with LEDs from http://superbrightleds.com but haven't chosen specific products (e.g. T-5s and T-10s) yet. Figured while I have it pulled out I'd do this since once the dashboard is back in place I am not removing it again! Dash lights are green as usual, but the "mechless" stereo unit I installed (BOSS) has an intense blue display. I'm changing the dash lights to blue LEDs to appear more consistent. My Problems: At night, there is absolutely no backlighting etc. for the 4-way mirror controls, and the 4 pwr window switches. The engineers kindly added "bumps" to the driver's side door --in order to feel where the window controls are-- but it'd be so much more convenient (and safer) if those 4 switches were illumined in some fashion. I haven't pulled the bezel (for windows switches/door latch) but I doubt they are backlit. They didn't put in a low-fuel warning light, so why do the other useful things. I am adding a lamp or two in order to dimly shine onto the window switch panel and onto the mirror control panel. Like tiny spotlights, but of a low intensity as to not distract the driver. I just want the driver to see where they are at night, rather than feeling around for a few seconds with one's left hand. I have locations staked out for positioning these & will be installing the corresponding socket bases. My Question: I think I know where I can draw power from (there is an unused, brown wiring harness next to the emergency flashers push on/off switch, apparently for an accessory never included on this particular model. Maybe I can run a lead from that, but that presents its own issue: it has 4 contacts, instead of the convenient positive/negative. Does any know how I can 1)properly get power to these new bulbs, and 2)connect them in such a way so they dim along with the instrument cluster lights? BTW I'm buying dimmable LEDs. I guess I'm looking for an electrical schematic rather than trial & error and screwing everything up. I can't seem to get my hands on a repair manual so old, which probably would have a diagram or something I could refer to.

  6. This writeup is intended for the Subaru Loyale / GL \ Third Gen Leone (1984 ~1994 EA82) models, however... ...many ideas shown here applies to other car's instrument clusters. I Hope the Procedures that I will explain here, will be Helpful for people who want to remove the Dashboard and instrument Cluster on their Subarus, without breaking the old plastics, nor damaging anything. Also I'll explain how to Clean and Retrofit LED Bulbs on the instrument Cluster and the Dashboard's button panels. Warning! The Procedures I'll Explain here are based in my Own experience with my Subaru "BumbleBeast" instrument Cluster and Dashboard, My Subie is a 1985 California -USA- version, Carbureted EA82 Wagon with the -almost- Clear (yellowish) instrument Cluster, Newer models has a green tinted clusters. The procedures I explain here are for the Left Hand Drive Subaru Models, with analog Clusters. Despite that different models came with different clusters' designs,the ideas I post here, shall work on the analog clusters... ...those Ideas and Procedures are NOT intended for the Digital instrument Clusters, that came on the Luxury GL-10 Models... ...but those also can have LED lights retrofitted, I'll show you photos in further posts of this Writeup. Important Note: please be careful when applying these ideas, especially the Right Hand Drive Subaru Models, which has Reversed sides. Disclaimer: Use this Ideas, and all the ideas I share on the forums, at your Own Risk! Prior to Remove the Dashboard's Cover and take out the instrument Cluster, I had sometime Looking for its Parts and Diagrams, Here... ...and here... ...and I Found this... ...Useful Diagrams... ...and Part Numbers... Part of the motivation to do this was also the Oil Pressure Gauge on my Subaru "BumbleBeast" because it was reading below the Low Mark. That happened when the Cable that comes from the Sender at the oil pump, accidentally got loose and its plug touched bare matal (Ground) around, it made the needle to go Up more than its Limits, stretching its internal coil, and since then, it Looked like This: I went to the Local Subaru Dealer to see if they had the Replacement, and they did, but they sell the whole Part from the instrument cluster, and it doesn't have the Oil Pressure Gauge, it was the LADM (Latin American Domestic Market) Specs version for the EA71 engined models, because it had a Lower RPM's range Red line: at 5.5K ... This is the Part the Local Dealer's salesman showed to me: and this is its part Number: So, I had no choice except to figure out how to Fix that Low reading Oil Gauge, and finally I Did it! ... ... Continue reading, I'll explain how, in the Followin' Posts. Since I was at the Dealer, I purchased three new Bulb's with Sockets, just in case I break a Socket, but those where Not needed at all. However, I posted the above picture just in case anybody needs its part number. After that introduction, I'll Start to Explain the Procedures in the Followin' Posts

Long time Ago I wanted to install a Stereo CD Player + Radio unit on both my Subaru Wagons, the ER27 (H6 2.7) and the EA82 ("BumbleBeast") and, since the Newer Stereo Units are Larger than the Old Ones, they'll come outside around one or two inches from the Dash, Also they will Stay Directly in front very near of the Shifter Knob, and that is a Problem, especially when shifting fast to third gear. So, I did This Idea: it is a Wooden Frame, Cutted in a 45º Angle to make the Look of a Original Mounting, in that Way, nobody notices the 2 inches elongation outside the dashboard. I Painted it to mate the Dashboard's Original Colour. And I did Cut Down the Shifter Too! ... ... Not only for the Looks, it has many advantages, like shorter shifting travels, but the main reason was to Avoid Hitting the Stereo Unit while doin' a "Fast & Furious" kind of Shifting, especially to Third Gear ... ... also to Avoid Hitting the Passenger's Knee ... ... I Was About to Finish a Drawing explaining the Wiring Diagram, because I changed the Stock plug and added a Custom Plug while separated the Speakers' ground (Newer units needs fully independent wires) but I Found that the wiring is already very Good Explained here, in this same section of the USMB by another member, so I only will tell you this tips: Don't forget the Shared Ground for Both Left Speakers, and the Other Side's Shared ground for both Right Speakers; you must rewire them to independent ground on each Speaker, in order to avoid problems with the built-in Amplifier. As far as I know, each Speaker comes wired independently from factory, but there is a place behind the Glove Box, on the Wiring Harness, where the Factory merged the Grounds for each side. You can track down the point and rewire the part from the New Stereo's Plug to the Wiring Harness. Kind Regards.
