So, since I lost my Job after Fourteen Years, due to political reasons, (and I am Not a political person), I've been helping more people to Fix their Cars' problems, not only old-school Subarus, and as the Newer models has OBD / OBD II systems, I am really in Need to obtain a Good Scan Tool for these cars, because I don't want to bother a friend who has one, each time I need to use it. So, which one is considered as the "Best Option" balanced between price and usefulness? Somehow I am some sort of "Newbie" with this scan tools ... ... so please share with me your Knowledge, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards.
As stated in the title, I have a 2005 Legacy that I cannot get to link up with my OBDII reader. This has been an issue for probably 6 months or more and no check engine light as of now. I am coming up on having to have emissions tests run on my car and I cannot get it to pass if I cannot get the tool to link. I have tried many online suggestions such as checking the cigarette lighter fuse, pulling the battery and letting the computer "reset", and checking all of the fuses inside the cabin and under the hood. Am I missing something here? The OBDII tool does get power so I guess the housing with the computer isn't completely dead. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Every day when I drive to work, the check engine light comes on in almost exactly the same place, just before the car reaches normal operating temperature. Sometimes the light goes off after a few minutes, other time it stays on untl I shut the car off when I get to work. The car seems to run just fine even when the check engine light comes on. I can get a trouble code number 42 out of the memory, when the light is on. I have changed the temperature sensor, the Idle Control Valve and the Idle Contro Switch, none of that has made any difference. Anyone out there have any ideas what to look at next?

I might have an opportunity to buy one or two and it would be nice if I could put them through their paces. Thanks!
