April 13, 20187 yr I am ready to put the engine in, but first I need to install the oil pump. "Keep Your Subaru Alive" says to not to use gasket sealant when installing the oil pump. The surface the pump will attach to is scratched, is "no gasket sealant" still the best course of action? Hopefully, picture below Edited April 13, 20187 yr by mkoch
April 13, 20187 yr The picture would not come up for me. I am guessing the required lack of sealant by use of the sheer paper gasket is likely because a lot of sealants squeeze into the pump and contaminate. Just a guess on my part. Good luck. If done correctly, you should obviously have no leaks but depending on just how deep those scratches are...

Hopefully, picture below That paper gasket doesnt really do a lot of the sealing. most of it is done by the larger o-ring. How scratched are we talking? Like scotch brite scratches? or deep gouges? BTW thats a beautiful looking wagon! Edited April 13, 20187 yr by Sapper 157
April 13, 20187 yr If you are really worried, smear a super thin little bit of sealant directly into the scratch, and then wipe off all excess. Then install like normal with paper gasket.
April 13, 20187 yr Sapper 157 is very right about the large O-ring's duty. Sorry, I did mine in my ea81 and wondered the same about sealing but it came out fine. Don't use shellac or the next removal will likely end up with destroying the pump housing.
April 13, 20187 yr Author I bought the rebuilt kit for the oil pump. It has four o rings. I was unable to remove the two phillips head screws on the pump. Am I correct in saying I will be able to use only two of the o rings? Also, I am guessing that the thicker small o ring goes in the hole pictured. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/weimadog/EA81_oil_pump_o_rings_zpsn2hxgi2h.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/weimadog/EA81_oil_pump_only_rings_zpsbsgz9jnj.jpg https://photos.app.goo.gl/fkH9M5mHvaNh6zRG2 Edited April 13, 20187 yr by mkoch
April 13, 20187 yr yeah that tiny bit of scoring on the pump flange shouldnt be a problem. As far as the O-rings you are correct in both statements.
April 14, 20187 yr I was unable to remove the two phillips head screws on the pump. You need to. It will continue to leak if you don't. Mount it in a vice, and use an Impact driver if needed. But you are in for disappointment if you don't reseal that section.....that's were the action happens.
April 15, 20187 yr The screws come out easily if you rap them with a punch before attempting removal. Also some valve lapping compound on your screwdriver helps. Paper gasket, no sealant. If you don't have the paper you could substitute a non hardening sealant such as Hylomar. VERY small amount. GD
