EA81 and EA82 Engine swap to EE20 Diesel

Featured Replies

I have an 87 XT and an 86 BRAT with an EA82T and an EA81 respectively. If either of those motors dies on me catastrophically I'll have to do an engine swap. I know most people seem to like dropping EJ engines into these cars, but I would like to make them both diesel with subaru's EE20 diesel engine if I can. I know that its physical dimensions will work as it is slightly smaller than an EJ22. I was curious if anyone knows what kinda of transmission mods I'd have to perform?

No help from me here, but what instead of an engine , an electric motor and lots of batteries?

The EE20 is garbage. They suffer from main journal inserts cracking and failing. It was an experiment and it was generally a failure. Thus why it was discontinued.

Yeah do it! Bugger cracks, deal with that later!

First I’ve heard about the cracking issue - but then again I don’t deal with them on a regular basis, or at all for that matter.

6 speed would be highly recommended!

You would drive right though the clutch so you wouldent get any more torque than the ej motor and would be replacing that clutch alot

I too am holding out for a electric option for my loyale no need to slip the clutch

I'm not looking for more torque necessarily. Diesel engines are generally more fuel efficient and more flexible in what fuels they use. But your saying I'd have to get a different clutch to handle it? What about the torque converter in the automatic transmission? Would it have to be changed as well?
