Turbo Oil Change

Featured Replies

I read a little deal about changing oil on the EA8X Turbos and it said that you should turn over your engine until you get oil pressure on the guage after you have changed the oil before you turn the engine on. This is to prevent the turbo from spinning w/out oil in it.

Questions:

1. Does anyone do this? (comments?)

2. How can I turn over my engine w/out disconnecting it fromt he tranny?

3. I can't check the pressure cause the turbos didn't come w/ oil pressure guages at least for the EA81T's.

Thanks

Pull the coil wire, then just crank the engine over a few times. That should do it.

or pull the ecm fuse

install a "real" oil pressure, coolant temp, and boost/vac guage

just start the stupid thing and dont rev it or anything.. it should be ok

I've never heard of this before..... where did you read it? I Can't see why the turbo would lose all it's oil just because the sump is empty...... Isn't it just the same as turning the engine off, as far as the turbo is concerned? Or are you specifically draining the oil from the turbo itself?

The turbo bearings should still work well enough with any left over oil in the turbo, even without any oil pressure (for a short time).

Thats odd. Ive never heard of it either.

What I do, oil change or not upon start up...it wait for full oil pressure to build. That usually takes 10 seconds. Thats the time I also wait on a sube w/out an oil pres. guage.

I read that on a .pdf format document of the Service Manual. I don't have my computer right now as it is KIA, but that's where I read it.

I think I will just crank her over w/out the ECU fuse for a wee bit, then give it a go. I was wondering if just draining the oil normaly would actually remove all the oil from the turbo, but I just don't feel like destroying my turbo, I already get in enough fights w/ my car on a regular basis.

ive only heard that for when you install a new turbo. when you put in a new turbo, i8t usually doesnt have any oil in it or the lines. this pre lubes it with out causing damage to the turbo.

I do my RX the same proceedure as everything else.. no porblems at all so long as you replace the oil filter with a subaru one
