A buddy of mine told me of this other junkyard in town, so i thought i'd go check it out. Not many subarus, maybe 8 total... but of those 8 were 2 RX's One '86 RX Sedan and one '87 RX Coupe. I snagged the coupes grill so I can experiment, and I also snagged the cargo cover from the RX. Both cars were complete, minus the rear diff's of course. But the coupe still had its kit, and it was pretty straight.

 

Then I decided to drive across town to the Junkyard I Frequent. Didnt find many new cars. There were 3 rows of subaru's, and there were two EA82 Coupes. One had the RX grill, the other was a DL with composit headlights and no grill. I tried my damndest to get the steering wheel from the '91 Loyale, but just couldnt get it off for the life of me. I'll need to return with a puller. But out of all the EA82's there, there had to be 4 or 5 there with aftermarket stereo consoles. All had the same one's and they screwed right into place. So I snagged one for myself, left the others behind.

 

All in all, it was a good day. Sure would have liked to get that steering wheel... oh, and some mint seats that were in a Toyota MR2.

No 70's stuff. Those cars usually find their way to the crusher before they make it out onto the yard. There's a junkyard in Nevada that is notorious for its 70's subaru's however, thats where I went for any EA71 parts I was looking for.

Does that come from a Legacy or Impreza? If so, i'll never see one in a junkyard. Anything 95+ goes to auto dismantlers.

You can easily convert your wheel to black:

 

Gen one steering wheel refurbishment.

 

• Remove wheel and pad.
  
• Get one can of Red Oxide primer.
  
• Get one can of clear, "satin" top coat. (High gloss if you are careful)
  
• Get 1 can Mar-hyde or like brand, high quality, black vinyl paint.
  
• Remove "horn" and "Subaru" emblem from steering wheel.
  
• Remove oil from pad by washing with hot, soappy water, followed by wiping mulitiple times with alcohol. Allow to dry WELL!!
  
• Paint pad with VERY light, mulitple coats of vinyl paint. Allow to dry in between coats. Do not top coat with clear!!
  
• Replace horn emblems with a drop of glue and use emblem, double faced tape for the Subaru emblem. Put aside till the end.
  
• Wet sand the back and all areas to be painted on the steering wheel with 320, followed by 400 grit wet paper. Don't sand the wheel itself, or any area that has a "texture". (Usually the very front, near the rim.) Use lot's of hot H2O. Do it at the sink.
  
• Smooth all imperfections.
  
• Prep and clean WELL with soap and water, followed by alcohol, using a clean lint free towel. Allow to dry well!!
  
• Spray wheel with a few coats of red oxide.
  
• Allow to dry WELL!! (Overnight)
  
• Paint wheel with VERY light, mulitple coats of vinyl paint. Allow to dry in between coats.
  
• Allow to dry WELL, (overnight)
  
• Top coat with protective clear. (2 coats.)
  

You do not have to paint the rim, just get all the areas where the rim connects to the wheel.

 

After a day or 2 of drying. The final task................ You wrap the wheel with a "LACE ON","SEW ON", high quality, leather steering cover. This gives the wheel a new grip, fanstatic look and covers's any cracks or wear areas. If you have big crack, wrap it tightly with string, to fill the crack.

 

I have done this to a few wheel and they are GREAT! Look new!! Any black wheel you find from the 70s, is going to need refurbished anyway. I do this to wheel, even if I'm keeping the same color.

 

This is not hard, just the sewing of the cover!!!!

You still got that brown wheel? With Todd's instructions I can refinish it to black. It was the hard plastic that I was worried about... looks like the wheel cover and string will solve that problem of the crack and the paint wearing off and add to the look! Let me know... thanks!

YAY!!! My RX will finally have a bodykit. Maybe I'll have two and sell one. Gotta wait for the hookups in Colorado to let me know if they grab it or not. But two sets can make me one good set and have spare pieces left over.....hmmmmm time for a wagon maybe?

Yeah. NV Zeno is in Carson City as well. Im overdue for a Reno junkyard run so we'll need to get together sometime. There are a few others in Reno too, and we've been talking about a Tahoe drive to play in the snow.
