Cheap muffler replacement

Featured Replies

There's got to be someone who's put a Cherry Bomb onto a stock EA82 here. What does it sound like? Any recommendations? I hate my muffler. Too quiet.

i gota cherry bomb turbo 2 muffler on my rx, it sounds nice. i only paid $15 for it

got a kinda a deep low tone to it and is baffeled, so it will pass inspection in most states.///

I have a Thrush glasspack on mine, otherwise stock exhaust. sounds quite nice, still pretty quiet because of the cats, but good sound. mine was about $30 shipped from ebay.

The stock EA82 is a 2" OD pipe (get a glasspack with a 2" inlet)

Whereabouts did you mount that glasspack Chux? Same area as OEM muffler, or did you shorten the cat pipe?

Also, did you notice a difference (in performance) running the glass pack? Seems like the cat is where the performance "bottleneck" occurs, with the muffler not being as critical.

Just curious...

I thought the stock exhaust pipe size was 1 & 3/4 inch

I have a hotdog in the middle and a sports (straight through) muffler at the rear - Sounds Sweet

one thing i didnt mention, i have a full 2.5" turbo back exhaust on my rx with a new 3-way cat.

I thought the stock exhaust pipe size was 1 & 3/4 inch

inner diameter (ID) I think so, but outer diameter (OD) is 2", or very close,

yes, I mounted it in the stock location, it's hard because there's a bend right before muffler, so you have to cut the pipe as close to it as possible, and make sure you get the clamp super tight (and recheck it while it's hot!), or weld it....this also means that it'll be held tight up against the heat sheild...and you will probably also want to put a tip on the end pointing down, otherwise your rear bumper will get hot and sooty.....

didn't notice any performance increase, but the stock muffler was completely rusted through, no restriction there. and I *still* haven't removed the cat....that is where the power will come from.

I have a 27" glasspack mounted where the stock cat goes (behind the junction of the Y-pipe). It doesn't fit that well, and it hangs kind of low, but it works and sounds better than the unmuffled exhaust that was there previously.

It's straight through, and has a nice deep rumble to it around town. It gets a bit loud on the highway once things warm up, but that's because it still exits under the car.

I've seen people route aftermarket exhaust a number of ways, but the OEM routing really isn't a bad way to go - considering the distance. Fabrication near the rear outlet would definitely be an issue, and the factory pipe/muffler has that big advantage. I'm probably going to go with an OEM on the one I'm working on currently, for that reason alone.

I've never ran anything but stock mufflers on mine, so I don't know how they compare to the turbo's and glasspacks. I'm guessing the OEM's are fairly efficient too. Their main disadvantage being the narrower diameter of the pipe...

John

I've had two cherry bombs on EA82s. They sounded like crap. Just like they sound on most every other engine I've seen them mated to.

The Thrush ones sound better. Also Thunderbolt glasspacks are good. However they are a bit more expensive than the $15 Cherry Bombs.

So what's an easy way to mount the mufflers? Back when I had me a 'Maro I sorta just c-clamped it on which didn't work out so well.

Get it welded on.

I just used exhaust clamps. basically a beefed up c clamp, got it at champion auto.

and morgan...I don't think your car sounds bad at all. I like mine better, but my glass pack was 2x as much as yours...

Thats becuase I'm not running crappy cherry bombs any more :)

What about hollowed out cat and a thrush? Would that be to loud and would that give you more power?

I ran with just a y-pipe and the thrush , and it sounded very nice! until the y fell off the motor on one side...

morgan: I see!!

go to ebay. thats were i got mine, it was for a wrx, sounds good. 41 bucks. you might need an adapter to change size of pipe. turbone saw it on my hatch. he siad it was kind of fance looking. i will put a link to it later tonight. it might look kind of ricy but dosen't sound like it at all.
