Anybody ever cut this thing off?

Featured Replies

When changing my axles in my 90 Loyale I had a clearance problem with a piece of sheet metal. It's a piece of the body metal that comes down from the inside of the fender in a triangle shape and has a hole in it that the brake line runs through. I bent it up and out of the way to make room for the boot as the axle came out and back in. Does anybody know why that's there? It doesn't seem to do any real purpose. Has anybody ever hacksawed it off? It would make future axle jobs a whole lot easier IMHO.

Which side of the car is this on?

Sounds like it might be a heat shield?

If it is...you probably don't want to

remove it.

It's not a heat sheild. It's on both sides. I'll have to post some pics, but it is a piece of the body and runs down vertically allong the outside edge of the fender/subframe and extends past the bottom of the fender/subframe.

i don't think it's a heat shield. i don't think you'll have a problem with that. it's probably related to reducing splash, spray, mud from going other places but i think the effects would be minimal.

This isn't my car, it's from the gallery. I can't quite tell if that's it, but what I'm talking about is the triangular thing you can see behind and to the left of the shock strut.

yep that's the part you're talking about. i wouldn't worry about it. might want to paint/prime/cover it to prevent rust.

That is just a mud guard. If you put the axle in from the front of the strut it isn't in the way and insert the asle from the outside in to the tranny. I've done many axles and it has never been an issue. You just have to work around it. It won't hurt if you cut it off though.

i don't have those......

hmmm,i wonder why,yep i cut 'em

you just have to clean the sides of your valve covers more often.:headbang:

i cut mine off too when i got my car but that was because the previous owner hit a curb and it looks better gone

bend it up out of the way, then bend it back when I'm done

double ditto

Sometimes you don't have patience to work from the front or work around it.:)

yup, just a splash guard. I usually bend it up out of the way, then bend it back when I'm done.

same here... pretty bendy sheet metal.. mines been bent up and down prolly 50 times
