i did some rock bashing and when the car idles at low RPM and moderatly high revs...it seems to shake pretty hard. i was told that it could be an exaust problem. i saw some noticalbe dents where the exaust come out the heads. i have a custom 2.25 in exaust from Y back and no cat....ehlp me with this people

Where do you feel the shaking the most, the fllor, your seat, the steering column, the console?

 

Does it shake in gear?

Maybe it is Due a Vacuum Leak in the Intake... Check the Hoses...

the whole car shakes but its the engine thats shaking and when im driving i can feel it too.

Sounds like a misfire.

Check your mounts(engine AND transmission). The engine could have bounced one of those apart.

come to think of it..it does feel like there is a little less power, the engine isnt really sputtering under throttle tho

Does it really do it in a low speed, low rpm, high gear, high throttle situation? That is, when you are in high gear and not moving very fast, and you mash the throttle, does it shake?

I have the same with my EA82T, my guess is motor mounts, because the whole car shakes with the engine, at every RPM

i took it for a drive, adjusting only the clutch cable and it doesnt shake as bad??????? ...hmmmm ill check some mounts

Maybe its just scared after the rock crawling ?

 

How many miles are on the clutch?

 

Maybe something is out of balance. Pull plug wires one at a time and see if there is any change.

 

Did the car stall at all during rock crawling?

I have only EA82, non T. They typically don't shake at all. The only time I've seen them shake is when a cylinder is missing. Bad plug / wire / etc. A couple times I drove around with no hood, the engine just sits there. Maybe leans al little with hard acceleration. Or maybe I should say with full throttle...

rotor, plugs, cap, all is new, and it doesn't missfire or anything, just runs rough, I can feel the rpm's really good through the GO-pedal :-p

Just for the hell of it. Remove the drive belts and run the car for a VERY shor time, watching the temp gauage. Let us know what happens.

Thats whay i said a SHORT time, like 30 seconds.

The logic is to rule things out.

The idea is to rule out any rotating mass that has been throuwn out of balance. Also a drive belt load can make an internal vibration worse by magnifying it.

 

Did you pull plug wires to see if it makes a difference? Have you checked the exhaust pipe hangers to see if you lost a hanger?

Okay, well I've had some serious shaking going on in my car a few times. Most mechanics seem to have been pretty confounded by this issue, and I had all the obvious maintenance done on it. Checked the mounts too, which helped, but didn't make it go away.

 

A few things which we eventually figured out was causing it. For startes, one of my CV joints was going out. So that got replaced, which brought about a noticeable decline in shaking.

 

Then, for some reason when I got new rotors put on, they would not stay tight. It took multiple tries before the mechanic was able to get them to stay tight. So loose rotors, not so good as you can imagine .

 

But here's the main cause of my shaking, which kept getting worse as time went by. It was the drive shaft. The u-joints were beginning to seize up. So they only needed to replace one section of the drive shaft first. But the shaking came back, and that's when the second section was replaced too.

 

After a new drive shaft install, the shaking was gone. All of it! Well, except for when I hit 70 on the highway . But that's something else entirely.

 

I hope maybe this will help, since I hadn't seen anyone else mention those possibilities.

remember that I live on the other side of the world, so that last 10 hours I've been sleeping, that's why you didn't get a answer, don't draw conclusions too fast.

 

and as I said earlier, plugs and wires are fine, it's not a miss, I know how that feels, it kind of feels like when my cam timing was 3 tooths off, only less shaking this time, I'm positive I got the cams right this time though.

i have a bad carb(wont run at all on idle) so thats probably not helping either

, since I hadn't seen anyone else mention those possibilities.

it wasn't mentoined because he said it happens at idle, so that would rule out the ujoints. but it's fairly common for these ujoints to go bad. always a good thing to be reminded of since they are easy to overlook.

 

joost - i thought you fixed your shaking, it was a turbo line or vacuum something? i can't remember, but hope you get it figured out.

i had that happen to my gl wagon and it turned out it was a rusted a/c idler pulley
