June 4, 200718 yr I bought a small winch... I'd like to keep my stock front bumper... Thoughts? mounting tips? Thanks!
June 4, 200718 yr What car are we talking about? The original Brats and EA81s had a push bar that could hold a winch.
June 5, 200718 yr The only thing it would be good for is looks. If you try and pull anything or even yourself, that bumper is coming off. Whats the rating on the winch?
June 5, 200718 yr third gen SW? station wagon? like a new OB or something? the stock bumpers are crap, they'll rip right out  i'll take a pic of the stock bumper on my OBS if you really want.. and you'll understand why...

The bumper is wide enough but I as just wondering if there is real anything under it or if I could take the cover off and weld some in and then replace the cover....

The bumper is wide enough but I as just wondering if there is real anything under it or if I could take the cover off and weld some in and then replace the cover.... I'm pretty sure that the bumper would support the weight of the winch, easy, the problem comes when you try to pull something with it, or pull yourself out with it... the mounts for the bumper are pretty thin metal, with nuts welded on them. I persannally don't think that the bumper is structurally sound enough to mount a functional winch to. By all means, go for it if you want, but don't be suprised when your bumper is moving forward, and the rest of the car isn't  if you're set on keeping the stock look of the vehicle, and just want a winch up front, i'd suggest building yourself a new under-bumper-cover bumper, out of some square tubing or something along those lines, maybe some 2x2" 1/8" wall steel? I just think the stock bumper is way to thin and flimsy to support the types of forces you're going to be subjecting it to. that's my 2 cents :-p
June 5, 200718 yr Well, theres the long version of what I said:-p indeed. is it the fat-lip bumper? mine barely held my fog lights in my blue wagon. the non-fat-lip one from my '85 is more solid (well...there's actually steel right behind the plastic cover). but no way would I mount a winch on there. you could pull the skin off, and do some serious re-enforcing of the bumper beam. that would be pretty badass!
June 5, 200718 yr Not to hi-jack or anything but doesn't someone in Colorado I believe have the jig for the Warn Subaru winch bumper???
June 5, 200718 yr And the car is probably 500lbs lighter! Did you add any more bolts to hold the bumper on? And is that the stock bumper?
