As my subaru gets bigger and heavier it's seem to have lost the ability to reasonabliy stop in a panic situation.

(Yes my brake system is good, no air in the lines, and the pads for all four discs are almost new)

I know others notice the lack of braking power with larger tires and extra weight but what have you looked into to try and fix it.

 

Has anyone tried anything with larger front brakes? (disc, calipers, pads)

Alot of people swap rear disks off a turbo car (ea81 and 82) You need backing plates, calipers, disks, and the hardware. Stainless lines instead of rubber help too. I'll tell you that when i did the swap my car deffently locked up faster. You can get them from the junk yard, and someone is usualy selling them on the for sale board. i got mine with a set of pads from edrach for $75 or something

I agree, that was one of the first upgrades I did. With alot of the guys now running 15" rims, I am hoping someone has started looking into bigger discs possiblities for the fronts.

You can also start with the easiest change first. Ceramic front pads.

EA82's have a larger front disc than EA81's.

 

IF you have an older EA81 with solid rotors, you can convert to slotted rotors.

 

Other than that, there's not many options out there.

only option beyond stock EA82t, is 5-lug. use EJ front knuckles, and your brake options become limitless....

Using the tranny to slow you down helps too.

 

good point, obviously in emergency situations you want as much as you can get. but knowing what the cars limits are, and avoiding situations that will break those limits will work wonders!

Do this, 99.9% of the time anyways, but I am always amazed how often people don't do this, especially coming down a long mountain road!

My key question was in a panic situation. I like dogs, I don't really want to hit one if it comes running out of the woods and you have no warning. (Which is what just happened)

I would agree if it were stock, but the three lifted subs I've tested, with at least 27" tires and extra weight in steel bumpers, winches, skid plates roof racks, batteries, and gear = panic stopping, not so good.

 

I was just looking to see if anyone has tried any other brake mods, other than the typical 5 lug and EA82 turbo disc swaps? Anyone?

I'm working on a magnetic propulsion system to operate in conjunction with my brakes. In a panic stop, the system will throw in full reverse propulsion, bringing the car to a stop in about 10' from 60mph. After you scrape your face off the windshield, you'll be able to carry on, knowing that you've saved another little critter's life.

Even if you do come up with a better braking system for a lifted EA81, you still have the problem of enertia. Especially going downhill on a dirt road. Your tires may be stopped, but the rig is going to keep trucking.

If you had a straight axle setup in the rear, you would have some chioces of bigger rotors.

I've owned 2, daily drove them both.....I still stand by my statement. it'll stop faster than most cars.....and it's not really even a car anymore!

So very true! :) Do you agree it's a night an day difference between the feel of a stock wagon and a lifted/loaded wagon? Although I am impressed with the fact that even with a load on the roof rack it doesn't feel as tippy as I thought it would.

 

As for the Magnetic Breaking system, while indesign can you design me one of those hover boards they have in back to the future... I really want one:banana:

night and day? no

 

but yea, it's noticable. it's not a corvette.....if you drive it like a corvette, your going to end up in a body cast (true story, dad's coworker replaced her vette with a wrangler...)
