Two Loyales race in The 2904

Featured Replies

Our 94 Loyale 4x4 wagon and another teams 91 Loyale sedan are about to undertake The 2904, Transcontinental Motorized Vehicular Tournament of Efficiency and Endurance!

The rules of the race are to cover the 2904 miles from New York to San Francisco as fast as possible for under $2904 dollars. The budget includes the car, fuel, tickets and whatever you need to do to the car to get it ready.

The start is this Saturday and we will report back with details! May the best Subaru win (or at least beat the Volvos and what ever else shows up to race)

Cheers,

John

Right on.

Lighter weight = better mileage and it’s free.

Ditch the rear diff, axles, diff hanger and drive shaft. Then take something to plug up the drive shaft output so you don’t lose gear oil. If you can get rid of glass, that will also lighten you up a lot. Gut the interior,

Also get some 165 width tires and put maybe 40 psi or something like that into them. That should get down the rolling resistance.

Ohh.. and a bajilliion stickers b/c then you will get 5 hp each.

Stick a can of Nos drink in the rear on the dash! That's good for another 50+ HP!!

Take the spare tire out too! That's about 10lbs...

Naturally, 10 miles after you ditch the spare, you WILL get a flat. Murphy can be a real *************** sometimes.

Keeping the spare. 10lbs isn't worth the time lost waiting for the tow truck.

Actually keeping the old wagon relatively stock. Pumping up the tires 7lbs over recommended pressure. Adding some driving lights. Bobble-head pirate on the dashboard. Already has a rear disc brake conversion.

Putting the back seat down so one can sleep while two are in the front and then there has to be room for 2 days worth of food.

Our 5-speed wagon will definitely be faster than the automatic sedan, that's for sure!

The key to the race is how fast we can pump the gas and go the bathroom ! :burnout:

That's our actual 156,000 mile, one owner car. Got the original window sticker and all records since new when we bought it for $1000.

Better carry some 50 gallon drums of fuel from the east coast. The prices out west are rediculous. Have you seen the price of gas in San Fransisco lately? Saw on the news one station was up to $4.12 for regular unleaded. It'll cost you $2904 just to get across the bay bridge

That is a nice lookin wagon! Good job on finding that gem. :)

And good luck on the race. Sounds like it's gonna be a good time.

is this guy:

going to fix that headlight before he drives the car cross country??

It will be interesting to see whether the 4wd car gets better fuel economy, or the AT car. it IS a 3AT, right?

Sounds like a blast, might not hurt you each to divide up a list of some spare parts to carry like belts, maybe a fuel pump, and tools? A little karmic action never hurt anyone.

what you are doing reminds me of the BABE rally (ny to new orleans)

i went on the BABE in my toyota camper, averaged 15 mpg and drove4400 miles, used about 250 gallons of gas at an average of 3dollars per gallon fora cost of 750 in fuel

Success! Both Loyales made it alive and well. Here's their stats:

94 Wagon in 40 hours 3 minutes.

Avg speed: 72.4 mph. 136 gallons of gas and 14 quarts of oil.

91 Sedan in 46 hours 41 minutes.

Avg speed: 62.2 mph. 129 gallons of gas and 4 quarts of oil.

Lost its muffler in Wyoming.

The winner was a 1992 Volvo 740 at 37 hours and 58 minutes. We'll get them next year!

Photos and more info to come! Thanks for your support.

TWO HOURS!! thats TANTALIZINGLY close.. good job!

That volvo is a great choice of car to do this sort of thing in.. any chance of getting their fuel volume? They aren't exactly gas pigs....and they are pretty good sized, comfy inside, and RWD. As long asyou can keep the thing running right, its a great car for this.

Of course, so is the soob.. but I have a soft spot in my heart (some would say in my head too :-p) for volvos of an early 90s vintage or older.
