November 18, 200718 yr hey i was thinking about going lincoln locker with my rear diff i have two diffs and i can spare one to make it but im wondering if my car is light enough in the rear now that it will aloww the tire to chirp instaid of snaping axles. because i have choped my car the rear end is much lighter. but then again i have larger tires on it. i could just deal with pullinga rear axle when its on pavement but that would be a pain this winter if i need the 4 wheel i will only have 3 wheel unles i crawl in the snow to put the axle in. but if its snowy enough the tire should slip even if on wet pavement idk i guess i could just chance it. anyone got any ideas
November 18, 200718 yr There is the axle disconnects that they have for towing cars behind motorhomes. It disconnects one axle, and does it all from the comfort of the drivers seat. nipper
November 19, 200718 yr excepting the fact that those disconnects are horribly expensive it is a good idea.i tried hunting one down for just about anyearly sube and the closest i got was ea71.and they were nowhere to be found.did you find a link to this or something nipper? November 19, 200718 yr 2 Problems I found with a welded diff were: Lots of wear on the rear axle splines and DOJ cup streching. Stub axles in wheel bearings wearing. But if you don't mind fixing those later on, then its awesome for offroading upgrade. A stock subie with a welded rear diff I reckon could beat just about any stock 4x4 offroad if you didn't give a . about the subie.
November 19, 200718 yr i don't pull the axle anymore, but i rarely drive it unless it's to and from the trail. but after driving on the pavement i do notice that i do tend to snap stub shafts in the diff a lot more often. the more pavement, the more they snap. i still haven't seen the outer hub's stub shaft go bad. my .02 if you still have the fwd option. i wouldn't pull the axle all the time, and on high traction roads leave it in fwd. i used to get lazy and not pull the axle before i had the divorced case... yes in the long run something might break. i need to start pulling an axle in my rear wheel drive subie, and hopefully i won't eat as many stub shafts.
November 19, 200718 yr I had changing in/out and axle down to 6 minutes in the ea81s. That's not that big of a deal, ea82s are pretty close t being as easy. If it's gonna snow, put the axle in the day before.

November 19, 200718 yr i had a machinist friend of mine look into making up the second option in that link.the axle disconnect.he said that it would be about 350 to 400 bones to get one made for me.which is about the same cost as ordering one from them as a 1 of.i believe that is the company i spoke to about it.it has been some time.they said at one time that they were approached for a late 70's subie and had done some research on the axle.who knows?
November 19, 200718 yr once your locked you will never go back Unless when you buy your old brat back it still has the LSD you originally sold it with. lol It works, but it's no locker. Proved that to myself today. I made it till the off camber really steep spot. Half way up that, no more go. I also took it kind of easy cuz my 2 year old was riding shotgun. Pretty impressive standing at the bottom.

November 20, 200718 yr once your locked you will never go back Yes the welded diff was nice. But I had to go back due to the FT4WD box. I still enjoy the FT4WD more then the locker, but thats probably because I drive more onroad then off.
November 21, 200718 yr Author yea with what rooinator said. i do have the fwd option and i think that with the back of it chopped and in front wheel drive it wont be much of a problem. also it will spend a majority of its rime offroad.
November 22, 200718 yr Author lets see a picture for thanksgiving lol i figured you would be interested in it scott just made a tail gate for it. it wont open but it makes it look good. here is the back wall made from the old hatch other side here is the best summer pic have NEW recent work got the CB antana and power cables in there new spot (clock didnt work anyhow) and new sterio due to the last one getting stolin.oh and some beter back was shots.

December 16, 200718 yr What about cutting an axle shaft in half.Drill a hole big enough for the "pins" that hold receiver hitches in place on both sides of the split in the axle shafts.Have a strong coller to hold everything together.Then have a bearing in one side so the axle shaft is supported.Pull one of the pins on the street.Put the pin back in place when you want the welded diff. Here is a rough picture I drew in paint.The blue shaft in the picture is a another "pin" for the reciever hitch.just its welded to the steel coller.and the coller itself is welded to one side of the split axle shaft. as long as you are not to hot and heavy on the throttle when you have it engaged it should work...
