  2. I guess I hadn't clarified why I'm willing to go the less thrifty route with this rebuild (jump off the boat and swim with the sharks, eh?). I'm in my early 20's, still with my folks and this GL is my car... My only car. My window of time living with my folks is quickly closing and I knew I needed a car that was reliable, and easy to work on. However the issues I had with the car were just one after another. It makes sense, the car is old and tired. So my plan is to get the car to somewhat of it's former glory, deal with the big issues (mainly engine and drivetrain) while I don't have a bunch of bills and have the extra parts stashed away for when some smaller issues come up as I start getting my feet under me and navigating life as an adult on my own. Basically I'm taking the "buy once, cry once" approach in the hopes that in the end I'll have a car that will get me through my 20's without a bunch of debt. And no offence taken, in hindsight I shouldn't have bad-mouthed anyone's business. I'm young and learning, I have plenty of mistakes yet to make. I appreciate all y'all's input, I just don't have much experience so learning from other's experiences is very much appreciated. :]

  3. If you’re pulling the synchros out you might as well get them bead blasted and put them back in. This will be your issue - the synchros are worn out and smooth so they no longer grab to match the gearset speeds with the engagement hub. Rough them up and they should work properly again. Gearbox work can get tricky if you don’t know what you’re doing - but as always, the best way is to learn! Just have a back up plan if the rebuild doesn’t go as planned. Cheers Bennie

  4. I’ve been meaning to get back with an update on this: I finally got the car running again, and of course the problem was simpler than I thought. Turns out the wire from the distributor/ignition control module to the + terminal of the coil had come loose from the ring terminal connector. I don’t know how I missed it because I must have looked that wire over multiple times before, but I reconnected it, and it fired right up!

  5. If the coolant bypassing the radiator (through the heater core[s] in this case) is adequately removing the heat, than the thermostat doesn't need to open. As long as there's adequate circulation, the thermostat will open when it's needed. In theory, removing the thermostat entirely can be counterproductive, as increasing the coolant flow means it doesn't spend enough time in the radiator to actually dissipate the heat.

  6. Definitely not too much data, I love it. We've discussed sending high and low pressures to the Haltech. And again, in AZ, seems fully justified. For sure. In the short run (tomorrow?) I plan on just plumbing the added cooler inline with the heater core with no valves.

  7. Make sure you actually bypass the heater core. Circulation through that circuit is what warms up (and therefore opens) the thermostat.

  8. And BTW please don’t be offended by the “thrifty types” comment. I’m in that batch - New England boy. This is generally a site for folks who wrench themselves or are lower budgeted and looking for assistance on older cars. So it’s a big boat and we’re all in it. With very little exception.

  9. I don’t remember the ‘02 Subaru’s having drl’s. I know you can leave the headlights on and they turn off when you either turn off the ignition or turn them off at the switch.

  10. Its a former Arizona car so rust is pretty much nil, engine was rebuilt at 115000 don't know the extent of the rebuild pic to follow

  11. Also consider quality of parts. CV axles, gaskets, hoses, boots, electrical mods. The quality of all these matter greatly. A fully rebuilt Loyale (engine, drivetrain, suspension, weatherstripping, etc) is worth far far less than the sum of it's parts. Photos of the car in question would help. :]

  13. Hi all. Decided to join the message board after finding quite a bit of good info here when researching what I think was Duty C solenoid issues on my 96 Legacy wagon. My first car in 10th grade was a 98 Impreza hatchback and I've loved the EJ22/4EAT combo since then. My Legacy is at 200k now and I certainly don't expect it to be trouble-free since I hope to drive it to 300k. This board has been a help and I'm sure it will be moving forward. See you around!

  14. B and I did some work on our cars. Replaced a front CV axle in the Forester that's been making noise occasionally but for quite a while. B changed his engine and trans oils. Trying to figure out Impreza's potential cooling problems. Seems better with the new thermostat but still crept up a couple times on our last trip out west in mild ambient temps. Really need to get some temp senders calibrated to the Haltech and get them installed on top and bottom of radiator. IIRC the middle of the coolant temp gauge is about 210F on the Haltech but I can't guarantee either is accurate. Infrared temp gun near the coolant temp sensor indicates it's at least close. Then 3/4 of the way up the gauge is 217F at the Haltech, probably still nothing to worry about but should confirm actual temps. Also thermostat is at the bottom/inlet of engine while the temp sensor is at the top so I'm getting coolant temp readings from the opposite end of the system than where the temps are controlled. One thing we did was a smoke test on three different Subarus. The Impreza's fans seemed to suck in the smoke as well as my white Outback with the stock fans. Could see at least some of it blowing out the back of the radiator, didn't seem to be blowing around the sides or out from between the condenser and radiator. So I think the fans are at least decent but since the overheating is a low vehicle speed issue perhaps we could get better fans although these had the highest CFM rating of any fans I could find. One idea I have is to add a large heater core above the ABS unit under the hood vent on the passenger side with an electric fan on it. The one we added to the back of the black Outback dropped coolant temps by 20F so that should do the trick and would be fairly easy to add. AC was discharged before our last trip so I added some refrigerant but now it will cycle on and off about once a minute. The high side spikes up to about 250psi while the low side drops to 20psi, then they briefly start to converge before the compressor kicks off. Wondering if I have a clogged orifice as this seems like a much larger pressure difference than the charts show. One time out west the coolant temps went up the power steering pump stopped working at low RPMs. After we got home I first tried installing a pump from an EZ30. Bracket is slightly different, no big deal, I'll swap the bracket. Nope, pulley is a different size too, not going to mess with trying to swap that over. So much for Legos. Got an EZ36 PS pump from a local junkyard and swapped it in this morning which solved that issue. We decided to tack up a couple trailing arms for B's eventual billet rear knuckle swap. Also trying to figure out my gas tank filling issue on the Impreza. I replaced the carbon canister which is usually the culprit. Not much better, also the one I pulled out seems good (not dumping carbon pellets out like the bad ones usually do). Pulled the hose off the canister that goes to the gas tank vent. When we blow compressed air in the gas filler air comes out that tube (seemed maybe a little blocked at first) similar to the Forester's. Last time I went to fill up with gas it shut off before the tank was full, I pulled that hose off the canister and then the tank filled as it should. Next time I'll try to remember to pull the other large hose off the canister instead.

  15. No photographic updates, but some work was done today and I figured I owed some proof of life. Still need to get the engine back out of the brat to get the bracketry welded in, the frame rails boxed in again, the crossmember modified some more, and a few more odds and ends, but I put that on pause slightly so that I can move towards reclaiming my shop space from the "donormobile." I've been working for a few months now around that Impreza shell and its welcome in my workspace has been worn pretty thin. Today I rolled the impreza chassis out and started prepping it for chopping and removal of all the remaining driveline components that i still need. That ended up being just disconnecting brake lines and the sway bar, along with removing and tossing the old ratty carpet and disconnecting the parking brake cables from the handle in the cabin. I've measured out the rough length of the section of Impreza trans tunnel that I'll need, but I'll probably be just taking the entirety of it and then trimming to size. Same goes for the rear suspension mounts and towers, but i suspect I might end up fabricating more of that than I might otherwise expect. I also did a quick on-the-ground measurement comparison of the width of the wheelbases between the Brat and the Impreza. from outer edge to outer edge of the rear tires, the brat sits at about 56.5", and the Impreza at 65.5", meaning I'll need to either modify the impreza rear diff crossmember and strut towers by removing about 9" of overall width to get the stock suspension control arms to be able to drop in place, or fabricate my own mounts & crossmember to add to the one on the Brat already. I am not 100% sure which will be the simpler of the two options, or if a third path might present itself, but the way I see it most of my progress on this build has been by just getting started and solving one problem at a time. Eventually I should run out of problems and it'll work, right? Speaking of other problems to solve - it seems that on my last post I've hit my max limit on uploadable files for the forum, so unless somehow I can get that 10MB cap lifted, I'm going to start linking photos as links in either a Drive link or another photo repository. Not a huge fan of that option - might also go back and reupload my images in a more compressed format so they can be hosted natively. Can't tell you how many photobucket albums and images I wish still existed - I'd hate to have that happen here. If anyone has any insight to keep more image files hosted by the forum directly, I'd love to hear from you.

  16. A number of weeks ago I posted a couple random questions and today I'm here to update you on the rig I'm building with and for my nephew. First off thanks to this awesome site and its members for assisting in almost every step so far. A while back I did some work for a friend and afterward he threw this Loyale at me for free because it was just taking space, had engine problems, and a broken rear hatch glass. I did diagnose a blown head pretty quickly during some high speed forest trail testing that may or may not have also caused another broken window in addition to some subtle impacts to the rocker panels and a torn cv. After the field test I went ahead and added it to the row of cars behind my dads barn that he definitely doesn't hate. He has a pretty specific "wtf?" face that is visible from about 100 yards. Fast forward to a few months ago my nephew is about to graduate an apprentice electrician program, has already been hired by a job starting in January, and he needs something he can drive to work here in town for a year or two till he can afford his own car. He's commented multiple times that he "loves that shitty looking wagon parked behind the barn" so I decide it's time for him to learn how a car is put together and how to maintain his very own "shitty wagon" as he put it. So Dec 1st I get the Loyale on the trailer super early and I'm at the shop by 7am. All I gotta do is clear out my 2 stalls and then I can dig in. At exactly 7:58 am I pick up a leaf spring pack that I didn't realize had what I assume to be a missing 10mm socket jammed between two leaves. As I sat the pack down whatever it was came free causing the pack to quickly close on the tip of my thumb on my left hand (non-dominant). After slumping to the floor and briefly wondering if this is how my life ends I pulled myself together and grabbed a 3/4 wrench within reach which I used to pry my thumb free. After that I did the smart thing and went home to take a 4 hour nap. Long story short (hah) after my nap the subsequent ER visit showed a fractured thumb in 3 places. Definitely a great start to the new project. So I was forced to sit back and instruct my nephew over the last 8 weeks while my mangled, nearly severed thumb was healing. Ate a burger and pointed at things while my nephew pulled the engine, sub frames, he did the timing belt + pump, seals and gaskets all around (engine, trans, diffs), thinned out the wiring harness, auto locker in rear, wired a new stereo and speaker set, tons of other menial tasks, and finally he learned the birds and the bees when it comes to engines and transmissions getting it on. Resulting in the beautiful union between an EJ22 and a 5 speed dual range. Kid has learned a lot in the evenings after work and I've enjoyed a lot of sitting in rolling chair with a beer and a laser pointer. Yesterday was the first day I actually pushed my mental and physical capabilities by getting into the shop before 1pm. As my left hand gripped my harbor freight ratchet that I should warranty soon, I could feel the strength returning to my mostly healed but still kinda stings a bit sometimes thumb and within no time I had the engine and trans mounted with the SJR 4" lift. Next I made short work of a 6 lug conversion front and back, ending the night with the front suspension done and front wheels on. Today I had to run a bunch of errands and shop for groceries which that is a separate blog so I can't get into it here but I did manage to swing by the shop for a few hours and get the rear sub frame installed with wheels on and the weight dropped. Leading to a picture needing to be taken, and a forum post needing to be composed. I'll be sure to update one more time when she drives out of the shop. Sincere thanks again to this sub. Would have beat my head against the wall quite a bit without yall. (still might tho)

  17. I’ve got rear discs on both my Brumby and L series without changing the standard system other than braided brake lines. The brumby is by far the vehicle with the best brakes now! The L series needs new rotors or pads after sitting around for a few years, plus it runs 27 inch diametre tyres so that takes some of the punch out of the brakes. If you’re running the old rubber hoses I highly recommend replacing them at the very least with new rubber hoses. Best upgrade is the braided. I had a kit for the brumby from an ADR approved kit from eBay that did all the stock hoses then the flexible line to the rear caliper made up by a local brake and clutch specialist to finish off the complete system. The important thing is that your fronts lock up before the rear. If you’re locking the rear up before the front I’d recommend overhauling the front brakes then looking into the front/rear brake bias if the issue persists. It’s down right dangerous to have the rear brakes lock up before the front. Cheers Bennie

  18. And a major milestone has come to pass. The Brat touched back down on all four tires for a brief time here this afternoon, and the stock Impreza wheels really fill those wheel wells up nicely. I've left out images of the tacked in brackets because they're A) extremely ugly albeit functional, and B ) not particularly different from where they sit in the mockup. After having completed this milestone I will say for those following in my footsteps - getting these brackets to site evenly and where I want them was very tedious to do by myself, on the ground, in the sun, in my driveway. They also need about a quarter inch spacer installed underneath them to allow the vertical edge of the upper bracket to get good contact for welding to the frame. I'll be welding a chunky fender washer or fabricating a spacer to thicken the base of the bracket to accomplish this. Installation of the bracket sets would have been much, much easier if I'd had a lift to use or removed the engine first (or ideally both.), neither of which I have or did. Egg on my face there. I'll get some more images of the engine bay and bracketry once I've put this thing back up on the stands to pull the engine and subframe. Next up is getting these welded in completely, boxing the frame rails back in, and modifying the subframe to accept the impreza power steering, as stated in earlier posts.

  19. Second post to keep things flowing and file sizes under control- Repeated the operation on the passenger side of the car. Bolted the brake mounts and calipers on lightly, and threw a wheel on each side - one WRX alloy and a newer impreza steelie. Thinking I might go with the steels and paint them white, but that's a long time down the road. A lot more fabrication to go - control arm brackets, shorter CV axles (probably some chopping for clearance in my future here - it's a pretty clear shot but it's tight), steering rack install (still haven't solved that clearance issue at the transmission bell), transmission tunnel (still part of the impreza)... A long list but I'm really excited for the milestone of putting this back down on its wheels. Even more excited to get the impreza out of my workshop! More parts and pieces to come - Again I do plan on having these bits available for others doing a similar build - just reach out if you're interested :).

  20. Ive spent alot of time trying to salvage the stock fuel/emissions systems on the EA81 cars. In the end I found that the SPFI or weber swap was the only way to go. Unfortunately the the SPFI system is becoming scarce, and the weber kits are costly. I would still likely dump the Hitachi if it needed rebuilt, but my new hatch has a nice one bolted too the manifold. Ive decided to re-invest my energy into the non feedback Hitachi system. Much regarding the EA81 Hitachi carbs has been discussed on this forum. For some reason the vacuum system and its components still remain a little fuzzy. This may have to do with the vagueness of the service manual or the confusing difficult to follow steel vac lines. Subaru/Hitachi definitely over complicated this system and to add confusion theres numerous calibrations that vary per model year. During the 70s-80s automakers had to get pretty wacky to get cars to meet emissions standards. I suppose it was during this era that the "just rip it out, I hate emissions crap" ideals began. More often than not this gutting may have solved a problem by eliminating nothing more than a vacuum leak. Since these cars are so old and parts for this system are sorta unavailable we have no choice but to take this attitude. Thinning this system is much easier and will have greater benefit if its taken with some understanding of whats being removed. My time is limited and Im only going to post info that Ive seen members looking for lately. If there is interest I may add more at a later date. Alot of this info is opinion, based on my experience with these. My terminology may not match the FSM, and might be misspelled etc with poor grammar and broken sentences. Take it or leave it. Would be great for members to add (friendly) contradictions or contributions. Im going to start with the air cleaner: "Stove Pipe Control" - this is the thermostatic valve that controls vacuum to the carb preheat motor. This diverts air flow into the aircleaner/carb. When cold the valve is open causing hot air to be drawn from the exhaust pipe. This helps to speed up warm up time and prevent icing in the carb. They are great, except that mine had all failed in the open position. This is not doing you any favors in the summer time. I live in a mild climate with pretty warm summers so Ive elected to unhook this system (including the corrugated pipe) and plug its vacuum source. There are ways to get this working if needed. Ive used something like this in the past. "Thermo Valve Vents" - these ports are for the thermo valves. One is for the black water temp valve thats for the choke (the one by the disty). The other is for the white "wall" temp valve for the EGR valve, canister purge, and the vac advance. The origional vac hoses make it hard to mix these up, but I dont see it making any difference wich goes where. More on the valves another time. "Hot Idle Compensator" - pretty common gizmo from this era. Supposedly, some where around 150 F (air cleaner temp) this opens up to help prevent stalling. I suppose during long periods of idling in hot weather fuel in the carb can vaporize and richen the mixture. This valve would open and in effect raise the idle and lean out the mixture. Of corse in the real world (or least on my car) this gem failed the vac pump test. So it was just a filtered leak. I eliminated its tee and plugged the port on the air cleaner. I havent had any issues from this. "Air Bleed Ports" This is where the high speed/main and low speed air passages get their filtered air. Since this system is so poorly covered by the FSM Im going to share my opinions on it now. In a few posts Ive noticed members are simply plugging these ports. If you live in a cold climate and only drive short trips then you will notice very little difference in driveability with this mess removed and plugged. This system may be nothing more than an economizer. But I believe the Hitachi was designed to have these ports open in some fashion. These air passages arent like manifold vacuum ports. They are plumed directly into the mixing stage of the carburetor. Whether they were orifice'd straight to the air cleaner, temp controlled, or computer controlled, Im unaware of any factory calibration where they were plugged. As Ive said I live in a mild climate at hight altitude. I found the car runs fairly rich, and inconsistent, with the ports just plugged. On my car the mess of hoses were incorrectly routed, with one of the ports fed without the orifice in the circuit. Once I figured this out the carb no longer "needs a rebuild". Im unsure of how these were factory routed and tee'd. So, I found the car runs best with the passages directly routed to the vacuum control valve (VCV) with the orifce lines on the carb ports. You MUST have the orifi in place! On my configuration there were 3 total, 2 silver colored and one gold with a smaller hole. There may be dozens of different sizes, I cant say. It seems to run best with the gold one on the high speed port, and the silver on the low speed port. As mentioned these lines were ran directly to the VCV. I removed the the tees and loops. I tested the VCV with a vac pump, and the thermo vac valve with a lighter. They both checked out, so I kept them. Manifold vacuum is supplied to the thermo valve. IIRC it opens at 85 F and vacuum is then supplied to the VCV and VSV which causes them to open. What were they trying to do here? My guess is that under certain conditions the float chamber may end up under negative pressure. The VSV would open the chamber to the atmosphere, eliminating this issue. I have not experimented with capping this one yet since my VSV tested good. I did have to remove the VSV's cover and replace the air filter inside because it had turned to dust. I had a sheet of foam that is meant for window A/C's that I purchased at Lowes. A small cut circle of this foam was installed and the cap replaced. Years ago on a different car I removed the control part of the system. I used a tee and one orifice after the tee right before the port on the air cleaner. The VSV was also removed and the line from the float chamber was hooked directly to the unused connection on the air cleaner. This was in Vegas (hot) and I didnt run this setup long before going SPFI. But it worked. If you are missing an orifice or one of these components fails to operate correctly, there's no reason not to experiment with this setup. In fact the EA82 cars are setup similarly. If you are missing all the orifices you could try an experiment of your own by melting a tee closed at the third leg and poking a small hole in it. Im not sure how precisely engineered the orifices need to be. If there is real interest in this thread I have more to add. Not sure its really worth it, seriously, how many EA81 Hitachis are even left? You may also argue that its best to just eliminate all of this "crap" and plug everything. And I will say, Ive seen cars so stripped of this emissions "crap", even the PCV system had been disabled and plugged Why? Because they had a problem and didnt know how to diagnose it, or what any of this "crap" was for. Why delete it if you can get it working? Uh-oh Ive now been on the computer nearly 2 hours and my wife is getting suspicious so this is all I have for today...

  21. Tighten the Crank pulley bolt to at least 140 ft lbs. Many times the torque specs are listed in the exploded views, but not in the repair sections.
