  1. If Smart Service sells this kit it is definitely reputable. Smart NEVER does anything less than perfect.
  2. Subaru has two types of LSD; the earlier LSD type from the early '80's was a clutch type. The more recent, VLSD is a viscous type. I think he was thinking about the early version.
  3. I'm not the fastest mechanic in the world, but the first clutch I did on my '91 Legacy took 10 hours start to finish. Worst part was making love to the tranny from underneath trying to line it up and get it in.I didn't have a very good transmission jack. Some years later I had occasion to replace the engine on the same Legacy. I did have a hoist and it took me just over 4 hours to pull one and install the other. Doing the clutch with the engine out is easier than doing it from under the car. You do the math and you'll know which way I'm doing the next clutch replacement.
  4. Give Jason (in Parts) a call (toll free 1-866-528-5282) at what used to be Auburn Subaru. If it can be gotten from Subaru he'll find it.
  5. You can certainly use the original two piece driveline if you wish. Only difficulty is the center bearing carrier will not bolt in and you'll have to fab some way of doing that. When I installed mine with Jerry's help we originally installed it that way but decided to go with the one piece version later since there wasn't enough good metal to really secure the center bearing carrier. Jerry had a driveline made for me at a shop near Yakima. I don't remember what it cost, but it was definitely not $300....more like $125 or less. Came with zerks fittings which I prefer over permanently sealed.
  6. How's your oil consumption? I had the mis-fire on #2 and MAF errors on my '97 Imp. Turns out I had bad oil rings on number 2 cylinder and the plug was badly fouled. MAF likely due to my K&N filter; replaced that with stock and installed another MAF, replaced the engine for the oil consumption issue (bad rings on #2) and haven't had any problems since. I have used good MAF if you want one ($50 shipped).
  7. Andy, submit this to the USRM! A great read even if I do prefer my 5MT.
  8. Front main seal. Give up on autozone; order your parts from Subiegal or Jason at Mike Scarf Subaru. Call me for 'phone numbers if you need them.
  9. I've got to disagree with not hurting anything. If the tires are not all the same size you have the potential of locking up the transmission and not being able to get it out of gear. Been there and done that; fortunately nothing broke but the problem is quite obvious and it will force you to resolve the issue quickly.
  10. Under the steering column;remove the plastic shroud under the steering column and if you follow the wiring from the ignition switch about 6 inches toward the front, it comes to a pink (sometimes white) plastic connector with 4 wires in and 4 out. If the plastic is discolored in the area around one of the wires (turns brown and then black) it indicates a bad connection there and that will cause a voltage drop there which generates heat and causes the intermittant failure of the starter to engage. I've seen this on the early cars and on some of the early '90s Legacies. I've never seen it on a 2000 car as yet and they might have changed this connector but it's an area to look at in the event that getting a better connection at the battery terminal doesn't solve your problem.
  11. Which model and year Subaru do you have? Besides the battery terminal, there is a connector in-line with the ignition switch that will cause the same symptoms (i.e. intermittant not starting); this cause is not miles related but age related and shows up on the early '80's models and has migrated to the late '80's cars (same connector). They still use the same connector in the early Imprezas and Legacies. Off topic: My 10,000th post!!!
  12. Sign of an aging radiator is a steady increase in temp as your speed increases. The faster you go on the highway, the higher the temp guage will go.....time to think about a new radiator if that's the case. With a good radiator, the temp will stay rock solid at whatever the thermostat will settle on when it's warmed up. A flush helped (you have the data to prove it), but eventually the flush won't. In any event, I hope you got an OEM thermostat.
  13. Information from this link might be useful: http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/lsd/lsd.html
  14. Sadly, the type you bought is prone to that. It's a matter of finding a quiet spot between radio stations to use it. Unfortunately, that spot changes if you're driving any distance at all. Return the unit. I had the same problem and found the best solution was buying a radio with built-in iPod capability. I've seen a number of these recently and they are in the $100 to $200 price range (or more). Buy the one with the iPod connector already installed and "iPod ready" not the ones where you need to buy an extra adapter for another $50 or so.
  15. Useful info for those of the LSD persuasion! I can't take credit for it, but also didn't want it lost. http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/lsd/lsd.html
  16. I have one of the 3.545 LSD rear diffs. Still trying to find out what they are worth so I can sell it!
  17. Next event is July 13th. http://www.oregonrally.com/Event_Detail.cfm?EventID=553 RE-SCHEDULED Check www.oregonrally.com for updates.
  18. Sounds like MWE axles; I've ordered two from them and found them to be good quality and they are both working just fine in my cars. I've seen more positive posts about MWE than negative on the Board.
  19. More pictures are posted. http://www.shutterdriven.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=12488 I like this one best since it makes it look like I'm really moving!
  20. Don't sweat the hanger; consider it a souvenir. Hope to see you again at the next National if we're lucky enough to have another one locally. You guys must have really hauled butt to make it home in under 48 hours. By the way, it came from Rallitek...coolest hangers I've ever seen.
  21. You did GREAT Aleana. Pics are up: http://www.pdxsports.com/photos/showindex.asp?page=1&folder=200806RX1
  22. By the way, did you see my TO times in the afternoon? Amazing how much I picked up sitting next to my son and watching what he and the Impreza can do.
  23. Craig, I think you're getting faster. I certainly hope I'm not getting slower!
